Lance, my brother, Tom Tomlinson, worked for Bernie from 1978 to 1985. He drove that coach and the successor coaches that Bernie owned throughout the years. My brother spent many days driving to Custom Coach for service, updates, and unscheduled visit through out the years. Even though Bernie kept the coaches in Lakeland and Miami, those coaches went all over the country on the hydroplane circuit. I spent a few trips with my brother on the diff coaches. For the early coaches, Bernie would sell his old coaches to August Busch III and he would get a new one from Custom Coach. Those older MCI's ran like no other on highways and were great. My brother had a few speeding tickets to show for the speed those coached would on the open road. You have a great coach there, congrats on restoring it to glory days.

thanks for writing all of this down - what a great story and set of memories - means a lot to me! After reading this I remembered it had been mentioned he would sell it over to Augie and then buy-up. Evidently there was a friend of Augie's in St. Louis that loved the Custom Coaches so much that every time Augie traded up, he would too. People just loved those CCC's.

To answer Lance's question, yes, there was only one Antonov 225 and the one he has a picture of with a bus entering it is the one that was destroyed in the initial attack by Russia on Ukraine. It unfortunately was in a hangar that was bombed. Not much left but there is always hope that capital may be found to take the remains and remanufacture the damaged wings and attach them to the one fuselage that has been stored to make another Antonov 225. Too beautiful and unique an aircraft to let the remains be scrapped. Just like many unique old buses with amazing histories of their own. Thanks Scott and Lance for the history lesson on that beautiful bus.
@ChrisHarding-lk3jj
@ChrisHarding-lk3jj 5 месяцев назад
No that was an Antonov An-124 Ruslan, the Antonov An-225 Mriya has 6 turbofan engines and the one in the picture has 4 and the tail configuration is also different. The An-225 was revived and converted into a commercial freighter and entered service in 2001. There was a second An-225 that was never completed and it is currently 60/70 percent complete and Antonov has 30 percent of the parts needed to complete it. China was originally in talks with Antonov about buying it and having it completed but nothing ever came of it. If the Ukraine survives the war as a sovereign country it will likely be completed using many parts salvageable from the destroyed aircraft. The completion cost is estimated to be around $500 million dollars even with everything they have.

Fantastic coaches. I drove a semi - custom one in the early eighties all over the US and Mexico. Front third had the standard seats, middle had two opposing couches and the back was an "office". Was manual shift. Ran circles around other coaches. Would take any hill and pass while doing it. Very nice...

The refrigerant type has nothing to do with the longevity of a system. I have seen plenty of 1994 vehicles with R-134 systems that have never been touched.
@carlbernard4197
@carlbernard4197 5 месяцев назад
@@ChrisHarding-lk3jjIt all falls on what manufacturer built the system and how well ventilation pathways were maintained to keep it in its proper operating range. 😊
@ChrisHarding-lk3jj

@@carlbernard4197 When it comes to vehicle air conditioning it all comes down to how well the rubber used holds up. Compressor shaft seals are a very common failure point and of course rubber hoses. Metal on metal flare type connections will hold up much better compared to a connections utilizing an o-ring to create the seal.
@BusGreaseMonkey
@BusGreaseMonkey 5 месяцев назад
A refrigerator made in 1975 would last for 40 years. A refrigerator made in 2024 will last for 4 years. It ain’t the rubber.

I'm an OLD boat racer. One time Bernie saw some boat racing jewelry (ring and necklace) I had on. He said - WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE (they were custom made by a friend of mine). Bernie contacted him and the whole crew received some for gifts (so I heard). I still have my jewelry and get many comments on them.

As an RV this bus is about $ 500 a year to insure and is the only bus my insurer will offer guaranteed replacement on….as an RV. When I ran this bus commercially in the State of Tennessee (TNDOT) it was roughly $11,500 a year - when we switched to Federal DOT authority it jumped to about $ 17,500 .

That's definitely not the Antonov An-225 Mriya, that's an Antonov An-124 Ruslan. The An-225 is powered by 6 turbofan engines and has a split tail configuration to allow for the Buran to be carried on back similar to the space shuttle on the modified Boeing 747. The one completed An-225 was abandoned after the collapse of the Soviet Union and was revived and converted into a commercial freighter and entered service with Antonov Airlines in 2001.

That's a beautiful bus. People don't appreciate the history and era of Big conversion buses and 2 cycle Detroit diesels that powered them. My mind goes back to the 80s when you had rock bands touring the country in these buses. Thoses days are long gone and the EPA has ruined the new diesel market. I run a DD15 and it's a good engine but the One box or DPF system as it's known had to be replaced before 500K miles. I love the old school diesels These new ones are junk in my opinion.

That's the Ukrainian An-124 "Ruslan" of Antonov Cargo Airlines in the photo. As far as I know it is still flying around right now, 'cause all of them, except one, were abroad at the moment of the Russian attack on Kyiv, which led to the destruction of An-225.✌️☮️🇺🇦
