During the press junket for Alita Battle Angel, we had the pleasure of chatting with the legendary Christoph Waltz about his role as Dr. Dyson Ido in the movie written and produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez.
Check out how Stefan Pape got on when he spoke to Waltz who didn't make things easy for him!

He's right. He plays the charcter and moves on to the next movie/job. It's up to us (the customer) who are fans of the Alita material to make our own minds/ theories about the character.

Anyone who watches this and thinks Christoph is being awkward or aggressive clearly hasn’t watched many of his interviews. This is him. He never talks about the character, he wants you to think for yourself. He was clearly giving the interviewer a hint not to ask too much about his recent stint at directing with a smile and glint in his eye. This is typical of him. If you don’t like him, fair enough but at least do a little research or watch some interviews with him before making a judgement.

@@christophwaltzvaultz You're the head of a Christoph Waltz fan club, pal. I think you have some rose colored glasses on. I swear, Christoph Waltz is just too smart for like the 95% of the population. And a lot of people just don't get his irony or he wanting to have REAL conversation while being interviewed and not doing PR shit (no for f*ck sake its not his job - thats the PR job not his) or answering stupid and shallow questions. They call him rude or mean while he seems a genuinely nice guy who actually likes to talk. He has very dry sense of humor, I get it, which I suppose its pretty difficult to understand for non-european people, but as an European, I relate to him so much. I don't find him rude or anything like that, au contraire. My advice? Try to ask him some real and intelligent questions the next time instead of lame questions such as "mmmh James cameron is famous so it must be easy work for him!!!!111!!xdxdxd" or the SAME OLD QUESTIONS "mmmh describe ur character!!111". Try to have a real and honest conversation. Fun fact, before you interview an actor you should be actually interested in his job and the philosophy behind it, not just want to promote a movie (which you probably didn't even watch - and this looks like the case) because your boss told you to do that. But I guess these are just my two cents...

Exactly. A good journalist is someone who researches their subject before sitting down to talk to them. A truly excellent interview with Christoph was done by NPR's Terry Gross who does exactly that and he flourishes with people like that and opens up more.

Holy shhh-, it's like Waltz is attacking the interviewer yet Not cause he is kinda actually teaching him to think more critical. Intense interview yet very smart. I respect him even more now, I love his acting he has that sense of strong confidence yet fun mannerism. He reminds me of my respected art teacher before where he only gives A or an F and it's pretty much up to us the student to say if we deserved it or not if he ask that question 1 on 1 cause I believe he is teaching us to be confident and think more critically for ourselves.

I hate the way the Independent spun this into some kind of big deal. They said he was 'under fire' or something for what I see as a friendly, if slightly eccentric exchange. I suppose it's no surprise they covered it in that way, a while later they went on to smear the whole Alita fanbase... Think someone at Independent has it in for this movie, possibly one of Cameron's haters.
@magnacz

He is a little Germanic in his approach, not too accommodating a little argumentative and skeptical towards the interviewer. Doesn’t seem to have worked with this guy before doesn’t want to answer standard questions about how he feels. It must be annoying having to answer the same questions after some time that you finished filming and left that character behind a while ago. Now you have to sell it for a second time since it seems to be part of the contract these days. Having to tell how wonderful everything was and what a genius the cast and crew has been. I’m sure being a great international actor for many years now he chooses his script and director carefully but many things can be different than you expected them to be and the end product sometimes has changed from what you intended or expected. The dumbing down of things is an international phenomena and he tries to resist.

Not sure if you're aware of to but this is an old interview which was filmed with all the others. Just bc it was upload recently doesn't mean its "up to date" ;) btw if the interviewer comes across in a unsympathetic manner to Waltz he sure isn't going to make the interview in all favors to the interviewer ;)

The work awkward is only put in the title as a sensationalism. Mr. Waltz is actually being really nice here trying to accommodate the other and explain himself, he could have easily just refused to go into this subject at all. I'm still trying to figure out why he's often being described as a tough subject to interview, so far I've only seen him honest and open with his answers, even sometimes making efforts to reach out and be friendly.
