All Ojehs are the same from the origins in Ile-Ife and Ijaiye in Nigeria to Benin Republic through Togo to the Gaas in Ghana to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Mali. All the masquerades speak the original Nago (Ile-Ife)language and the drums are the bata, omele and iya ilu. Even in Gabon and Gambia. Check it out.
We need more of these including the soway or sampas. Let’s show case our best dancers and bubu as well. We have the best for sure. Thus May even attract tourist.
It’s really beautiful to watch and it reminds me of the days when cape light beautifully dressed in white , pajerro pack fine beautifully dressed in red etc use to compete as to who dances best with melodious songs and drums that goes with every step..From Yoni (Mile 91, patifu),Yayleh or yilleh to Kangama Kono. Up till now I couldn't figure out the languages that coscos are speaking, I'm only limited to it translations into Temne language... God continued your blessing upon our people .
This is a unique culture of the Themne people of Sierra Leone.......Should I disagree with other narratives of its origins? Ojeh or Egugu is truly of Yoruba origin. But the Ojeh in Sierra Leone is only practiced by the Themne tribe. And the Themnes are credited to migrate to the northwest of Sierra Leone from beyond the the Futa Djallon mountains before the arrival of the Mane or today Mende. These Themnes are very likely connected to the people of Benin and the Yoruba peoples culturally.....And the Ojeh didn't just start among the Themne with the arrival of the Creoles and the colonial English.... its always been there within the Themne people particularly at the village level. Please listen to the Themne songs being sang. They have nothing to do with the repatriated or Creole settlers and indeed the English as some would assume.....Ojeh maybe Argoo or Koskos is a unique culture of the Themne people and not plugged from the Creole or the Repatriated settlers in Freetown as assumed. The Creole form of masked street dancers is different and called "Hunting", which is a celebration of seasonal wild boar slaughtering......
