I met Steve after one of his shows..he was just standing in the lobby by himself...I talked to him for about 10 minutes until people started to recognize who he was...one hell of a nice guy.
When illusion came out I was young but I was astute enough at that time to know this... They lost alot of their Danger in the sound.. it's crazy how we all knew this ,and they pretended they didn't
Matt is a better drummer but Steven gave them that swing that filled out the original GnR snarl. I saw them open for The Cult in 1987 and signed Duff's jean jacket when they were walking amongst the crowd while The Cult played; they were on the cusp stratospheric stardom. the Welcome to the Jungle video (with Axl doing his 'snake dance') had not yet been released, nor had Sweet Child o' Mine which would all be released in 1988.
@@bradsanders407Appetite for Destruction is legendary still to this day... Welcome to the Jungle Paradise City Sweet Child O Mine Mr Brownstone the list goes on and on,,,, the combination of Slash's guitar with Axls massive vocals/ lyrics had never been done before,,,I lived it as a teen when the album came out and it was a game changer,,MASSIVE. It was even huge in Mexico when we were there on vacation at that time on the beach, they were blaring Paradise City,,everyone was rockin out,,,,Inspired countless people to pick up a guitar, learn to play. Your very mistaken. Use your illusions albums had some amazing work on it as well
@@bradsanders407 you are insane, Appetite is one of the best albums of all time, and the Use Your Illusion and Lies albums are full of really good songs, GNR were the last great Rock band when Rock N Roll ruled
Matt was a beast. The best drummer they ever had. I wish he'd been part of the reunion. Axl said it here, he saved the band's life. He put down such a foundation for this band. One of my all time favorite drummers. I do not get the whole "Steven had a great swing" stuff. He was below average to me. He was just fortunate to have been involved in some spectacular songs.
Matt was great but sometimes a little overblown just like the band was. And sometimes his drumming just didn’t make any sense to me. Like what was that on the chorus of Locomotive, on the snare? But I think that must’ve been the bands preference because it was all getting too overblown. Guess what I’m trying to say is that if Steven would’ve stuck it out, the band would’ve been more grounded on the Illusions albums.
It is what it is man. And Axl had a good point. Regardless of Steve and Matt’s different sounds and what they brought to the band, Steve chose his heroin and that’s that. Steve isn’t Matt and Matt isn’t Steve. They are both very talented in their own right, and they both have a different sound that they brought to GNR. Matt absolutely did save the band. Steve had his day and could have done many more great things, but Steve couldn’t beat his demons and he chose to stay true to them.
Lol Nirvana not only erased them right off the charts but mocked em as everyone was caught up in grungemania. They were merely one of the better bands in a really bad era of music. When the competition is winger, whitesnake and bon jovi i mean come on lol.
@@bradsanders407 Yet, no one listens to Grunge music anymore. Let alone is it regularly played on mass radio stations. Grunge came and went quickly just like Disco, Funk, and Bluegrass music. Nirvana was a shitty bad with shitty pre-madonna personas. "Look at me. I'm better than Hard Rock/Metal bands, etc".
@@travelinman482Except bluegrass has been popular for over 100 years now. It took a backseat to modern music as technology advanced, but there are still tons of very successful bluegrass bands making music today.
I was at that concert!!!! With the Rolling Stones, and Living Colour!! I was almost 20. Grossed out when he came out in chaps with his butt cheeks hanging out, though (during Knocking on Heaven's door). I wasn't attracted to him at all. Lol
I get it.. but Axl has to realize that certain band members just make things click in way that some random fill in just can't. If Steven is healthy.. he needs to be in the band. Also Axl's speaking voice is like pure honeyed bourbon. Seriously.
@@davisjohnson7691if you are cheated by your girlfriend, is it ok with you? You feeling martyr, huh! Remember, adler cheated first, that's why she got loose. It was a revenge!
AxL sempre mostrou desrespeitoso com os integrantes da banda que ele considerava dono ,ele parece ser o responsável pela banda ter acabado e mais continua desrespeitoso, deve ser muito ruim conviver com um cara assim.
@@GuinnessSyou can’t cause someone to overdose it was her choice to use,No one forced her. Just like it was my choice to use that’s like me blaming my ex drug dealer. That’s the risk we took when using you never know how pure or what it’s cut with.
Slash may have been handling it better than Steven. Imagine a scenario where you have two drinkers in a band and one of them was drooling on stage and playing line shit and missing gigs from hangovers while the other drinker was still performing up to par and never missing a show. I suspect this was a similar situation but under the name of another nasty chemical.
Steven was unable to play the drums, he slowed down the band... If they had waited for Steven, the Use Your Illusion albums would not have been released, nor would there have been a tour... That would have been the end of the band.
it was hypocritical. From what I have read, the drugs really affected Steven's performance in the band. Other people's drug addictions didn't affect their performance as much. I think that's what it came down to, but I was not there in person so that's all I can say.
It's impossible to say that, none of us know what kind of stuff was going on behind the scenes. It's likely he was causing far more problems with his addiction than the others
@@Scott-fy7fm He said it right in the interview. Plus I was a fan and lived during this time as a later teenager i remember very well EVERY member being trashed every interview and show. So he "alone" wasn't the problem. Plus its well documented Axl was a control freak perfectionist douche bag as well
@@roberthaizlip4057 the time you saw them represents probably less than 0.001% of the time they spent together, you have no idea what it was like for them in a daily basis. Lots of bands with multiple members with addiction issues have to kick out one member who causes more problems than the others
The truth of bands - in many ways - is that the show can go on when the band members are out of their minds…except for the drummer. When the drummer is blasted, the show stops. Drunk drummers are a disaster compared to drunk guitarists, bassists, keyboard players, and even singers. Bad drums just destroy the vibe. Lucky for my old band, I didn’t drink or do drugs.
They was all wasted back then but I think some of them could still struggle on and do their job Steven was probably about like me drugs was ALL CONSUMING and his performance was impacted which was sooooo sad because Steven Adler was “the best drummer” after him it all changed their sound changed you could hear it
I’m in my 40s and was a kid living Nextdoor to Axl’s step parents house in Lafayette, Indiana when ‘Use Your Illusion’ was playing on MTV constantly- and I have spoken to him, and heard gossip, on top of late night fights from their house, with his long, gray limo in the driveway, his cursing into a brick sized cellphone- etc. I refuse to believe he wasn’t on drugs and drinking. Dude was a comple mess from what I remember.
How can he not be fired when he could not do his job for 30 times with one song bec he was so high!!! What do you think of the bandmates and managers, babysitters?
Saw them with both drummers yes Steven was an original but towards the end he just couldnt play anymore like completely playing different songs. Drugs absolutely destroyed him.
@@nathanlh81 At present, yes, but as you well know, at that time Adler's problems were so big that he stopped being functional and became more of a hindrance than anything else for the band, and even though we love him and all that, things were what they were.
@@Dapal0710 Okay, I understand it a bit more now. It’s not like it wasn’t a bad environment for him to stay in, because it was. I forgot they just wanted the dude to be alright. I also remember Izzy leaving as well because he felt he was getting to that same level of everything, and just not liking being on the road with access to that stuff 24/7.
Steve wasn't the best drummer in the world, but his style, sound and stage presence was awesome. He had a raw, rock n roll sound. Not to put anyone down, but Steven was always my favorite.
I remember that period of excess, like when the whole band was doing too many shows, except Axl. He had the discipline to know when he'd been doing too many shows and would just skip them unexpectedly, end them early, or cause a riot, just to get hurts bandmasters the rest they needed. So magnanimous was 90's Axl.
Well, the change in drummers didn’t hurt GNR’s bank accounts for all you Steven lovers. THAT’S A FACT!!! I saw them 7 times on the Use Your Illusion Tour.
Mister Brownstone became very sad and lonely after Steven left and no one ever touches on that subject. We should have a moment of silence for Mister Brownstone 🤓
I think Axl seen this as one shot..one chance ..and some people weren't as committed to it as he wanted them to be.... Looking back He was right Everyone loves Steve Adler He's the GnR drummer That's the way it is But even today He's not in a good place
Nobody choses to be an addict. And when you are famous and everyone wants to party with you. I can't imagine what people like Adler, Cobain, Staley and too many others went through. Sick people need help. Sometimes they get it. Other times, the people who can help them either encourage their destruction. Or use their sickness to make money.
Snakes his royalties. That's why I stopped worrying about GnR. They were supposed to be the band that was all pirates. Without Izzy; they suck. Izzy says he wrote the song around Adler's drumming. Check out Mr. Brownstone for proof.
