Due to its bizarre appearance and unusual feeding habits, the aye-aye is considered by many to be the strangest primate in the world. It is the world’s largest nocturnal primate. Unusual physical characteristics include incisors that are continually growing (unique among primates), extremely large ears, and a middle finger which is skeletal in appearance, and is used by the animal as a primary sensory organ. I honestly think the Aye-Ayes are wonderful looking creatures. I love all animals and I find these little guys fascinating. In college I was originally a chemistry / microbiology major and I wish I had gotten my degree in biology concentrating on animal behavior and gone into research. I love critters !!! LOL The long finger on Aye-Ayes is a remarkable instance of specialization as is the long length of the giraffe's neck so as to reach leaves in trees to eat.

Whoa ! LOL I just moved to Durham North Carolina only about 7 miles from Duke University and I only now found out that the Duke Lemur Center is only a couple miles from me !!!! I finally got that through my thick skull - LOL. I am going over there to see the Aye-Ayes in the flesh hopefully as well as the others. LOL. I am like a happy kid waking up on Christmas morning in anticipation of seeing all of his new toys !

Someone said the Aye-Aye was ugly? Bah, they must never have seen humans. That little thing is amazing, it reminds me of Gizmo from Gremlins. Looks very passive, doesnt look like it would go out of its way to stab you with that spooky finger.

No, all lemurs are primates, like humans. they're just among the most distantly related primates to us. Koalas are Marsupial Mammals and so sit on an entirely different branch of the family tree (most mammals, like us primates, are placental mammals). The marsupials and placentals split into different families around 140 million years ago.

How would one take care of a animal like this? Have a whole room for it? So you can imitate a day cycle.. Dark during the day, so it is awake while your awake. And light during night, so it is asleep? I am not sure EXACTLY how nocturnal animals work..

@gypsyqueenmaya You know that if you buy snacks like potato chips, bacon chips and such, they often have palm oil, which is the main material people ruin the forests to get? So, if you really want it to stop, then stop supporting it by checking things you buy doesn't have palm oil (sometimes just called vegetable oil.)

This is just me throwing this out there, but they way the aye-aye lemur acts around the person kind of makes me wonder if the people have performed any inelligence tests on the animals. I think that these animals may be smarter than your average lemur.

Natives where they are kill them because they think they will rip out their hearts. (They use the middle finger to rip out larvae to eat). So I guess the natives hearts are like larvae, lol. The Lemur Center is a really cool place!

Their so cute :p . But african islanders have a superstition about these creatures, so they are being killed to prevent the aye-aye from eat peoples hearts (something like that)
