This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Ayn Rand's essay "the Objectivist Ethics" (In The Virtue of Selfishness), specifically on her discussion of what she terms "non-rational" ethics, by way of contrast to her own rational egoist or "objectivist ethics". She examines what she calls the "mystic", "social", and "subjectivist" ethics, and criticizes what she views as the "false dichotomy of altruism".

Hello Dr. Sadler, I just want to say thank you for these lessons that you provide, it's very helpful especially for newbies in philosophy like me. Also, why does Ayn Rand have such a bad reputation in philosophy circles? is it related to her views on ethics?

There are a number of reasons. One would be that she’s a careless and tendentious interpreter of other philosophers, including even the guy she claims to like, Aristotle
