I think charles and edwin have known each other for so long that they get kinda stuck in their dynamic. Charles has already set himself as the "happy one", the protector, so he avoids emotional vulnerability. then Niko and crystal come in and they shake things up. charles doesnt have a set dynamic with crystal, so its probably easier to open up to her than it is to do so with edwin, whose opinion he holds so highly Thats just my theory though
