Didn't 1995 cars got nerfed hard in terms of... like everything speed related after Senna's accident in 1994? Japanese GP pole time never exceeded 1:38 from 1989 until 1995. It came down to 1:34.7 at some point(no, it was Berger. Not Senna) and it wasn't a pole time for 1992, 1993, nor 1994. The fact that Schumacher in 1995 posted exactly the same time as Senna's 89 lap on a corner rich circuit like Suzuka was pretty respectable in itself...

Senna's 65 Poles in 10 years compared to Schumachers 68 Poles in 18 years. Senna was always quicker on a single Qualifying lap. He even had to use shift sticks. And He never cheated with the car unlike Schumacher at Benetton 1994 and FIA never punished him for the cheating or the accident on purpose against Hill in Adelaide at the final race of the season.

Senna was still that "old" style of very aggressive, meanwhile Schumacher was the first of the modern drivers, with a more professional "scientific approach", taking more kerb, smooth input, etc

You see the rapid technologigcal progression of F1 during the early 1990s. Just 5 years between these two but the 1994 Benetton with a V8 and lower downforce is already quicker and more stable on the track than the 1989s McLaren.

mbas0507 Using a manual would make hardly any difference for drivers from Sennas generation as they grew up racing with it. In fact drivers initially preferred manual to paddles as paddles were unrealiable to begin with. It's stupid comparing cars from different eras, in 95 the regulations forced cars to be slower cuz of Sennas death, here Senna is on super grippy one lap qualifying tyres were Schumacher is not.

His title win in 1990 was rly, rly messy and the only title he won up to his standard was in 1991. Schumacher and Prost on the other hand masters of racecraft. They impressed me much more especially Schumacher who on his best day could win from last on the grid. This is why my ranking is as it is. Senna is overrated and this is coming from a previous Senna fanboy. What happened was I actually bothered to watch races and was pleasently suprised. Correct.... And Ferrari had semi auto clutch , it was basically the fore runner of sequential gearing. There is no comparison, even Hamilton has said its unimaginable how Senna raced.

That's the point of the video - a curious coincidence. In terms of specs, there are some important similarities too - engine peak power output for both cars at around 700 hp, weight for both at 500 kg. What Senna in his McLaren perhaps had as an advantage with wider qualifying tyres, Schumacher in his Benetton compensated for with better aerodynamics. Both are obviously extracting the absolute maximum, from their cars in qualifying, so the purpose of this is just to enjoy and not to argue who is better.

There are other differences too. Senna was using qualifying compound tyres, which were wider too,compared to those from 95. Overall the McLaren had more drag. Also the gearboxes, wheelbases and even the fuel were different as well. Lastly as others have pointed out, the chicane in 95 was a bit different position and layout. We also have to assume the asphalt was changed at least once too. Lots of differences overall, which is why it makes it a nice coincidence that they did such similar lap times. And I don’t think Schumacher wasn’t pushing, it’s just that his car is more stable so it looks smoother. If you look up Senna onboards from 93 and 94 with the narrower tyres, he’s much smoother too compared to in the past.

Where do you see such a narrative on this video? This is just an interesting coincidence with almost identical times despite very different cars and drivers (and OK, a slightly different layout). Anything more than that is in people's heads. Let's entertain your statement though. Regarding Berger, how many times did he outqualify him in 91? That should give you your answer. Also, consider that Senna got 60 poles in just 7 seasons of GP racing, with only 2 of those running the best car and even then he had the best other driver on the grid as teammate - Prost. Does this take away anything from Schumacher though? Not at all. I consider him the greatest driver of his generation too. Can't really make direct comparisons between the two drivers. They both had strengths and weaknesses, had to drive under different circumstances, peaked at a time when the other wasn't around, so no point trying to say who was better.

I was just getting frustrated at the other comments about Senna showing some kind of greater skill than Schumacher on this particular lap when as you rightly say you cannot compare the two laps in terms of one showing evidence of any greater skill. I only bring up Berger to balance the comments saying no one could match him - because Gerhard did just a couple of years later at Suzuki. Anyway, great video!

Even though I was a big Senna fan back in the day and then I wasn't particularly fond of Schumacher (I cheered for Hill and Montoya), I came to appreciate the latter more in the past 10-15 years and be more objective about the former's career. It is equally annoying to me when fans of a driver, even those I'm also a fan of, get detached so much from reality and turn it into a cult. The thing is and I also know this from personal experience, no driver remains on the same level all the time. That is by far the most difficult thing, to be consistent in terms of motivation and focus. It's inevitable that on certain days even a great driver may not do that good of a job, which is why you can't judge someone's abilities based on episodic moments, it has to be done over a longer span of time, taking all circumstances into account. In that sense both Senna and Schumacher are greats because they were at the top of their game for most of their careers, very consistent and determined.

The car is not necessarily better. You have to remember that there were a lot of restrictions imposed in 95 to slow down the cars and to improve safety. The engines were smalled (2.5 liter), the tires were narrower than 89, plus the compound was not strictly made for qualifying (as opposed to 89 and other years when they had 1 lap compound tires). Of course, aerodynamically and suspension wise, the 95 Benetton was a better car. Overall I just found it very interesting that the lap times were almost identical, which is why I chose to make this video, so it the differences could be observed visually.

xNeFShARkx idiot, 1995 cars had much less downforce than 1989 cars. In 89 cars could run lower to the ground and no wood plank in the floor. This alone increases downforce a lot. Then, after Senna's death, diffuser also got smaller and there were restrictions on front wing too. Also, Senna was using qualifying tyres as hristoitchov said. Berger's Suzuka record from 1991 kept for several years(until 2001) and he did it on the same car as Senna, so Senna was slower than even Berger.

Comment 2 comment 3 bellow It would work in the slower corners but not at the high speed ones. A good portion of f1 corners u have to slow down now cause u will miss the corner and get tight but u can mash the gas almost any time once that ends and get almost no wheel spin. It still happens just not as much as now. Senna was able to control the wheel spin and get the car to turn more then it should and then it was ab himself controlling the wheel spin out of the corner to not crash and get the benefits from it in a way. Just like how dirt cars u use the brake and throttle to control the car and the more u mash the gas and get the car sideways the more speed u get. Senna was just flat out able to control the slide and it works even better in high speed corners where not really brake is needed and not much off throttle time is needed. If he held the gas he would just miss the corner. If he let off then just mashed the gas he would spin out unlike f1 now where u would miss the corner kinda no matter what. He would essentially mash the gas enough to initiate the spin then slowly counter it then as it slowly came back mash the gas again to make it continue to spin around the corner in a way that is basically slightly drifting. He could like everyone else let off till the car settles and then continue to the apex like most do. Instead senna did both. He did slow down but he also mashed the gas to turn the car. People say it was like traction control but in a way it was but it also wasn’t cause even traction control would stop the slide with the wheels which wouldn’t help. People also say it was the turbo but he did it way before he was in f1 and after the turbo days and still was incredibly fast so for sure it wasn’t the turbo at all. Senna gained his speed by the slight slide in the wheels and being able to tame it. That’s also why he was so damn good in the rain. It wasn’t really traction control he was just so good at controlling the slide. The big part of crashing he understood well. In the rain the dirt track effects play even more of a roll. Michael Schumacher was so fast cause he could keep the car balanced and right on the limit but not really stepping over just perfectly balanced. Senna he stepped over that line and got a few bits of extra speed. In the rain Michael was so fast cause again like I said his ability to keep the car balanced. He also tried to make every corner as straight as possible which allowed him to have more speed out of the corner overall which is something alot of drivers get taught they just can’t do it consistently like every lap like Michael cause the either over break or under and enter the corner slightly different every time. Michael was like a computer he did the same thing every lap or so close to it and was right on the edge but is balance was so good that it kept him fast he was also one with the limit just in a different way. Senna stepped over that line slightly kinda drifted the car around the track. That’s another reason why if u watch sennas on boards he is constantly fighting the wheel so much more then everyone else cause he is essentially always ab the crash but his ability and his trust in himself would keep him from so. Basically the only way sennas style would work now is if the cars had more power to equal the downforce, if the cars had way less downforce, that or his gear ratio was different so he could still get wheel spin cause his ability was all ab wheel spin. The more wheel spin the better for senna. His technique would definitely work in the rain still no matter what. Overall I think senna was the faster driver at overall speed and just raw speed but I think as time progressed since Michael was fast in a different way.

Comment 3. His skill would prevail as balance and running right on the limit and his ability to straight line the corner all still apply to modern f1. Sennas would too if they could find a way to always have his wheels spinning for him and so he could turn it with the car. The problem for senna is the skill gap is less prevalent now then it was so if anything his driving style might not pay off and he possibly could just make more mistakes then gain. He would try to turn the car with the gas and it wouldn’t spin and he would just get tight and over drive the corner costing him loads of time. Modern f1 cars are also way more twitchy and the limit isn’t as rideable and stepping over the limit. They are more forgiving overall but when u try to correct a slide it’s way harder to do so now as u kinda just wreck. U can still save it but it’s harder to even tho this is we are talking ab I bet he could manage that too and figure it out. Also the fact that f1 is way more ab changing buttons every lap and settings and car then just raw speed that would also hurt senna. Not saying he couldn’t learn it just u don’t get speed the same way u used to most the time. A lot of its car over driver and certain settings. Basically the teams would have to work hard to provide him with what he needs to be fast. They would have to find a way to get his style to still work and they could do that by also putting less downforce on the car for him. He would have more straight away speed but also way more wheel spin. I think it would work if they made the necessary changes for him and made it fit is style but even with that I don’t think yk he would be different and faster but he wouldn’t be seconds faster a lap like he was at times vrs everyone else it would be more like 0.050 a lap so it wouldn’t be as pronounced and obvious. Im just saying tho if u didn’t make any of those changes and threw him In Lewis’s car rn I doubt he would be fast at all and if anything slow full of mistakes till a team did the changes. The difference is f1 teams don’t really work to give u what u need exactly anymore so senna would’ve came in, in modern f1 and looked like a bust off the start cause the teams think they know best now and don’t work with the driver. They silence them, give them team orders, basically give them what they do and kinda expect them to be happy with it. They then if u fail look at it like well our other driver can do it why can’t u instead of trying to actually help and build them to what they can be. All the time drivers say this car is terrible man and the teams basically shut them up and make them silent. They only listen when u have a name behind urself but u can’t make a name unless they help or u fall into something that works off the bat then go to a new team then they will listen so that’s why senna possible would work now cause his name and teams would be willing to do anything to help change it and make it better cause he is “senna.” Either way that’s my piece on all of this. This is also why I think is bs when people say he lost it trying to stay a head of Michael or his crash at imola was his own mistake. Senna wouldn’t of made that mistake especially that bad of one. He my of spun or missed the corner and end up in the grass a few seconds pushing too hard cause we saw it at Monaco when he crashed but that’s cause the walls have 0 give or space so one mistake and u hit it no run off room or anything but he wouldn’t of ever unless he wasn’t in control of the car go head on into the wall the way he did. He was logically almost around the corner anyway so the hard part of entertaining the corner was over and that corner was basically flat out on its own so for some people to say senna made a mistake that’s insane to say or not truly understand his ability. Making a mistake in that corner was kinda hard to begin with so even what I listed earlier seem unlikely to ever happen in that corner. The corner was super dangerous but it wasn’t difficult by any means and only dangerous if something goes wrong. The corner itself was probably one of the easiest on the track if not the easiest. Unfortunately because of it his talents will never be fully known. His potential or whatever he would’ve become will never be known and we as people truly missed out on all the amazing battles between him and Schumacher and we missed out on a true legend and personal who was willing to give 110% if not even more commitment to what he wanted to do. He choose a career path and was 110% committed to it till the end. I think that’s what we missed out most on is his commitment and motivation and speeches. Missed out on his drive and willingness to push himself as far as he could go to find his own limits and build on them and understand himself to the best of his ability he even said all this himself. He was willing to do and take the risks it took to be the best even if it ment putting himself in jeopardy even once in awhile others. It’s why he didn’t want friends within f1 cause they got in the way of his goals. Outside of f1 kinda ok but inside he knew he couldn’t have them to be the best and knowing it was also dangerous too he didn’t wanna get attached to people that could very well be gone in a instant in that environment. He knew that would effect his drive to be the best. He was more then a fast f1 driver. He worked every day to be the best version of himself until fate stepped in and we got robbed.

I never really said who is better. I just said how senna was so quick. F1 não é evoluçao infinita sem controle, constantemente os carros são "freados" pra que a categoria não esbarre no inseguro. 2014 por exemplo, os carros eram de 5 a 8 segundos mais lentos que os de 2013. Em 2022 novamente uma mudança de regulamento tornou os carros mais lentos, pois já haviam evoluído para serem até 10 segundos mais rápidos que os de 2014 em algumas pistas. A única coisa que dá pra dizer desse vídeo é que os carros eram muito diferentes. Os dois foram poles batendo seus concorrentes, é isso o que importa.

No, I made this video simply because I noticed the coincidence of their lap times being so similar, nothing more. Besides, it's interesting to compare the difference in technology and driving style between the two cars and drivers. There is no objective to suggest any of the two drivers is superior... The track layout is slightly different at the chicane area, but otherwise the same.

Senna said the secret to win races is to drive the slowest way possible in the lead. He meant that the leader must conserve his equipment. Senna started from the pole many gps on his career. While Schumacher many times came from behind the field and had to catch up. Other than that, in a great part of his career, Schumacher's car was extremely reliable. A whole different era than the 80s and early 90s which Senna referred to. I believe there is no way to be clearer than that.
