Williams had dominated the 1992 and 1993 seasons and had by far the best car. Senna wanted to be in the best car. Unfortunately, the 1994 rule changes crippled the Williams in the early part of 94 and the car was very difficult to drive.
The FW16 was a very nervous car (especially in the rear end) at the beginning of 1994. It got better as the season progressed, but he was already gone at that point. Also, Senna stated that he never really felt comfortable at Williams like he did at McLaren. I think he felt home sick early in 1994.
@The Dasilva 1080P Trap No Prost. Senna and Prost became close after Prost retirement. Senna wanted a come back of Prost in F1, he had never accepted its retirement. Senna called him everyday to discuss about the FW15D/16 issues and the overhall safety concerns. Senna said to Prost that the B194 of Schumacher was clearly illegal.
@The Dasilva 1080p Trap j. alesi? always leaving the team in wrong time, r. peterson also, p.l. martini with such a potential stuck with minardi his whole career...we can go on and on...all after all senna spent a lot of time in good cars, dominant cars...and why he suddenly run away from mcl?
@@misobozic2634 Bruh, Senna wanted to leave, and Ron accepted. But right when Senna came to Williams, the car got messed up. There were many aerodynamic issues and the worst was the airflow through the sidepods, the car stalled too much. They made a new project with a small sidepod, but it would change only AFTER Imola, so... he unfortunately didn't got the right car that was promissed after Imola.
w With all do RESPECT to Adrian, AYRTON, Franck, Patrick, Damon, Nigel , Alain , Patti, and all the engineers that built this wonderful engine, I need this to mow my lawn, 2 shakes!!!!
There is some thing poetic in this video , to see ayrton and Rolands drive next to each other like that , and to think both of these cars they are driving betrayd them at thos crucial momets,at maximum G mid turn, sending both of them to their death. RIP both of them.
I loved this car from the way it looks. But still scary at the same time cause i got a bad memory on it as a child

The problem with these cars is that the head and shoulders are completely exposed. It is rather obvious that in case of an accident at high speed in a side collision, the neck and head would suffer serious damage. Although the mechanical problems the car had, if the car had the side guards and protection for the neck of todays cars ... ayrton would not be dead.
Senna was an experienced driver, and he certainly immediately understood, in the first test, that going to Williams was a bad choice ... His face said it all, without the need for words.
Indeed, Senna was in a two years contract (1994-95) and was planning to go until season 2000 at least with Ferrari : a 3 years + 2 seasons option . By the way, the contract has been used as a base for Schumacher, because that contract was clearly advanced and there was a pre-contract between Senna and Ferrari. It was settled with Todt, Di Montezemello and Senna. F1 would not have been the crap of today nor having to create an artificial champion/legend to help sustaining the loss of Ayrton
GTAGIS I find this really interesting, what book or article, (or interview?) is the source of this contract plan? I’ve seen others say Senna wanted to match Fangio and then try to win with a Ferrari
@@steez8902 It is more than one source. And all confirm i can't recall, but most probably lionnel Froissard, Jean Francois Galleron, Automobile Magazine, Auto Hebdo So on this, I am quite very very confident. And even when Schumacher has signed, it was explained that Ferrari has used as a based contract the one that they had discussed with Senna . Actually, after the pre-contract of 1990 which turned into a big mess and which is very known today, Senna and Ferrari had kind of agreement that has been build up through time. The first major step was Hungary 1992. Then another in Spa 1993. Then another before Imola 1994. But I believe that everything was already build up already in Hungary 1992. At that time the number was USD 23 Mio per year. So probably if it has turned to be signed in 1995 to start in 1996 it would have been probably updated at much higher level. Nothing was signed, no contract. But the agreement and its component was build up. Ferrari wanted Senna, Senna wanted Ferrari and it was just a matter of time and context.
@@lawrencecauchi665 No, most probably Ferrari either from 1996 onward or 1998 Cause he had a 2 years Williams contract and could have been extended by 2 years. So all would have depend on how Ferrari was regaining form or Williams was solving problems. The fact that Senna learned about the signature of Benetton and Renault before even Williams was informed, was a big blow in the relation, but that would have depend on how Renault (who was doing good from a sales perspective at that point) would have increased its involvement to retain Senna who was pivotal in its international and south American image and would have managed the german market (idea of having Benetton was to target the german market which is the first export market for Renault and also have a "cool" image with Benetton)
They were experimenting with the computer controlled suspension system and it wasn't functioning properly! It probably felt very foreign to Senna also, as he was a seat of the pants driver!!
Ethan Roebuck I believe your correct! Senna would have stayed with Mc Laren if they had retained Honda engines. What a terrible loss, it could've been prevented!
@@kenbaker8868 or if Prost hadn't joined them a year earlier forcing him to wait for a whole year will he finally got the chance to join them when they had all the driver aids that made the cars successful..
This car is the FW 15. Senna died driving the FW16. The older car was easier to drive but not fast enough. The FW16 was a bit faster but indeed a death trap.
Bom dia !!!!! Essa foi a melhor época da Fórmula 1. Senna, simplesmente o melhor !!!!! Abraço do Brasil........
@@misobozic2634 it’s because Hill received the updated FW16B after Imola which made the car significantly easier to handle and more aerodynamically consistent.
Steering column broke. I have seen looked at a lot of in car footage. There is footage that is not corrupted on the net. He tries to correct by turning into the slight spin, the steering wheel actually comes towards his body just before impact. Remember that Williams took the data recorders from the car before the FIA could see the data for themselves.
No way!!! Mp4/4 had at max 650HP, the boost was reduced a lot to limit the consumption to 150 litres per race!! Probably the most powerful F1 that Senna drove was Lotus 98T, 1200HP in 1986!!
changing to a new car and a new engine is what killed the great ayrton senna i personally think if he had stayed with McLaren or even gone to Ferrari he would be alive to this day and been even better with more victories
The FW-16 was quite a handful in the early part of 1994. It was completely different than the all-conquering FW-15C as it was stripped of all it's electronic toys (active suspension, abs, traction control, etc). The rear-end was very unstable and Senna voiced his displeasure. He was truly home-sick from McLaren and grew very close to Alain Prost again. What a sad end to a brilliant career.
I can't believe it been so long in 1990 I saw a man fishing from Brazil he hardly spoke English he knew more about me & help me get to be better 28 years later, i have blood clot illness broght on by injury and government job!
This car was not his coffin. In this video he is driving the Williams FW15C in pre-season testing, the new car was not ready yet. The car he eventually died in at Imola was the Williams FW16.
You can see how this particular Williams car was a racing shambles, and yet Senna's handling is so smooth, when compared to the on-board views of his competitors.
It was the right move. Hindsight's a wonderful thing, no-one could possibly have known. Williams built the car that Ayrton had been dreaming of - by his own admission had practically begged to drive - for two years, within the confines of the new rules. I don't really see what what else they could have done. Senna would have gone ballistic to find that the car Prost and Mansell cruised to championships in was suddenly 2 seconds a lap slower than he expected for safety reasons. It was a no-win.
On the on-board overhead shot, one can clearly see that the steering wheel, at this time, was not moving up and down and side to side as it did in Imola. Charges should have been upheld against the "mechanic" or crew member who was responsible for the botch repair on the steering column. Shameful...
Williams was and is a cold place to work, particularly for drivers who are used to being supported by their team and owners. Though Frank Williams was once a driver, he never supported or listened to Senna like they did at McLaren.
Anybody who saw this live in 1994 would know it was not Ayrton driving on the onboards but the test driver David Coulthard. Please get all the facts right.
Ha! Yep. Like he continued to say, it was an unbalanced car. It makes me wonder if he knew that the active suspension would be eliminated in 94'? I mean the car was originally engineered with active suspension then it was outlawed for 1994, so just remove the active suspension and hope for the best? But that still wouldn't answer the steering column failure question. The biggest shame is that he went out on equipment failure.
The cars Senna and Hill are driving are actually the FW15s from 1993 but in the new Rothmans livery. This was just a promotional video to announce Rothmans as the new title sponsor for 1994 that was replacing Camel. The rear wing and the monocoque where the front suspension rods are mounted are different shapes to the FW16 1994 car...
He was the best racing driver of all time also and excellent human being...for me still being the only one and I know that Schumi, Hakkinen, Lewis, Vettel, Jenson are amazing drivers but Im pretty sure that if Ayrton would not have died that day he would have at least 3 more championships, being as well the most successful racing driver of all time. We miss you so much ='(
I don't know how much improvement Benetton could achieve if Schumacher stayed with the team after 95. Benetton in 95 was really competitive as 2nd fiddle to Williams.
The car bottomed out, the steering broke on impact, it was a million too one accident, lots of thing contributed on that day, That day we lost a legend!!
Doubt it, the car went in the direction the front wheels were facing a straight line after it broke at 310km. You don't need to see the onboard, you can see from media camera's looking at corner. Steering broke. If it bottomed out and senna lost control he would hooked it to the left . There is no evidence of tires moving 135degree to the left, he smashed the brakes, as it was only thing he could do.
Would like to see: 1991-1993 (and 1985-1988) Senna vs 2017-2020 Hamilton vs 1995-1998 (And 2000-2003 and 2006) Schumacher (Even if I think that after 1999 MSC was less strong than 1998 because of his accident) vs 1963-1967 Clark (that guy was an absolute god in the 60's, no one at driving was good at him in that era) in today's cars Let's see who is the strongest
The Judge Maurizio Passerini claimed indeed that frames were missing but Bernie Ecclestone threaten him of a trial if he continues to say that, Ecclestone knowing clearly that Maurizio Passerini had no proof for a logical reasoning : it's obvious that the onboard camera of Senna was still recording because it was a strategic position. How the camera would cut just before the most important event of F1 ?
Simply put, Senna was murdered. Just the way things were covered up and a few other things that didn't make much sense, the Italian court rightfully found Williams guilty of manslaughter, however the statute of limitations had expired and no one paid from either Williams and especially the FIA paid a penalty. The real tragedy was and still is that Senna was used as a sacrificial lamb by the those unsavory characters that only wanted more money. Everyone knows that Tamburello was dangerous because of the lack of run off area, however the real question was and still is, Why Didn't the FIA cancel the race after the death of Roland Ratzenberger the day before? I guess Italian law was trumped by the six million dollars that the circuits owners would have lost if the race had been cancelled, plus the TV revenue uncle Bernie would have have lost too.
no kers, no drs, no f-ducks, no launch controls, no electronics, no assisted steering systems, no abs shit, no protections at all...... Just power, talent and 1000kg of balls!!!!
its amazing back in the day how exposed their head/helmet was compared to now. i used to remember when drivers entering a turn would tilt their head to help with the g forces which they don't do today cause of design and safety. its a shame all this change happened because of senna. what's even worse he might have won the title in 96 and if he did i believe he would've retired. also, what happened to williams? their last great years was with montoya and ralf which isn't saying much.
Learn your facts, MrSenna. The 1988 mp4/4 didn't have 1200 hp at all, more like 600-650. That season was the last one with turbo engines, and the boost was limited to just 2.5 bar. Besides that, the fuel tank was also smaller so engines had to be detuned compared to previous seasons.
During the lawsuit, the last second of the video was seen by all. It was just cut for everyone else @ TV...etc This last second is well guarded and we'll nerver see this one.
yes only the beautifull... everyithing els was bullshit.... Williams made best car 6 class better then rest but FIA just banned them.. and then they made crap car fast.... wich kild Ayrton
***** The car per se didn't kill Senna, he demanded the modification of the steering column, and the mechanics did a cheap work which later broke causing him to loose control of the car. That was the trigger of the calamity, but what mostly killed Senna was the layout of the circuit, the hiperbolic shaped tamburello corner (now a chicane) was very fast and dangerous, the wall was to close, meaning, if you made a mistake you would most probably be smashed against the cocrete wall (See Piquet and Berger crashes). Senna was unlucky to lose control after the Agip ad, which was almost at the exit of the corner, the most deadly part of the curve segment due the closest proximity to the concrete wall. About the car.. it was improved trough the season and almost made Hill the champion if not for Schumachers cheap crash that made Hill retire of the decisive last race and.. Schumi won -.-
Prost didn't destroy the season. Ayrton only won two races less than him with an inferior engine. The 1994 Williams was quick, but was, of course, poorly assembled and had poor reliability, which resulted in the tragic crash. Fuck Williams
