Join us as we dive into the history and beauty of Azadi Square, one of Tehran’s most iconic landmarks. Originally named Shahyad Square, this site was renamed Azadi Square, meaning “Freedom Square,” after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. This tower is the Tehran symbol.
At the heart of Azadi Square stands the magnificent Azadi (Shahyad) Tower (Borj-e Āzādi), commissioned by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. Designed by architect Hossein Amanat, this 45-meter tall tower is a stunning blend of classical and post-classical Iranian architecture, clad in white marble.
The square itself spans 50,000 square meters and features vibrant flower beds, and elegant water fountains inspired by traditional Iranian gardens. Azadi Square is not just a historical site but also a vibrant cultural hub, hosting numerous public events and celebrations.
