I was born on this Island on July 5th, 1964. I was born in my grandmothers house in the village of Fazenda das Lajes. The small town of Lajes has the larger port that can accept larger cargo ships on the southern end of Flores. I have been back to visit in the summer of 1991. The people leave because there's no jobs to make a good paycheck. And especially, there's no shopping. All the coffee, sugar, flour and other foods are shipped in from Portugal on cargo ships. This makes the items shipped in more expensive than usual. My father told us that in 1966 when we immigrated to the US that the population of Flores was about 15,000 people. Farmers would get in arguments and fights if your cows jumped onto their property and ate the vegetation on the owners property. Over crowding was the problem with people and animals back in the 60's.
What are the camping laws there i plan on buying land in flores in a few years but want to take a month or so hiking around flores to find what im looking for and am curious if camping in any open feeled is leagal ir do you have to hunt down the owner and get permission which would be difficult?
There are official camping sites. In some of them you need to pay and others are free. As fro wild camping, as long as you remain discreet and leave in the early morning, you should be ok. But we do not know what the law is. If it is the same as in continental Portugal, wild camping is forbidden, but tolerated in the least touristy places, as long as you remain discreet and leave early.
I can clearly recommend buying the magazine about the Azores that is published by Anabela and Jorge. I ordered it recently and received it today together with a handwritten postcard. Just Lovely! 😘. Great content, well made video- series and a great pictured magazine. Please keep going the good work Anabela & Jorge. Regards Jan

Bro i found the Azores on google maps searched more into it on youtube found my place to be i decided i wanted to live and visit Flores but couldnt find much now you are sayin its a hiker island man im dreaming again letss goo
Hi Louisa, we never camped two days in the same place, so we always carried our tent to the next spot. Some camping grounds are not fenced and don't have any one around responsible for them, so it's up to you and how you feel about leaving your things in an unattended tent - I must say the problem is not the locals. :)
Rain in Flores is nice, waterfalls become stronger, I saw some of them twice just bcz it rained a lot during the night. There's paths for the two waterfalls a bit hidden, we prefered to see them from far viewpoints, glad to see you took a guide. There's also another interesting abandoned village that had a project similar to Aldeia da Cuada but in waiting now. I'm not sure if you went to the top of the island but the views and the wind are impressive, the top have some huge giant moss and you can see the lagoons. Seeing Corvo island in the horizon from the north coast was very nice too, that small island is fabulous. Great video edit and sound, nice experience!
Many thanks Bruno for watching the video and for your great comment! Yes you are definitely right, after the rain the waterfalls are even more impressive ;) We reckon there are many more beautiful places to be discovered on the island and we cannot wait to go back ;)

Thank you for your kind feedback B Mck. We are happy you put Flores on your priority list, we really think the island deserves it, and so deserve its people, so friendly they are! Enjoy!
Hi, was there an option to check in luggage of big suitcases on your flight to flores? As i plan to travel to lisbon, saõ miguel and flores therefore will need a big suitcase that they check in and store under the plane?
Hi Lilla, you have to go to the Alagoa camping site (a wild camping site) and from there follow the trail until the beach (only a few metres away). Once you are on the beach, with the sea in front of you, you have to walk to the left side for a couple of metres. You will see there is some water coming from the cliff and that's where the waterfall is located. :)
Im speechless ❤❤❤❤ loved it...thanks dor showing one of the spectacular scenery of our lovely PLANET..... Lots of ❤ and respect from Pakistan...WILL VISIT FOR SURE.
