The artists who work at Amor Eterno Arte in East Oakland, California consider their artwork to be healing, whether it’s on the wall or on your skin. Chamuco Cortez is a tattoo artist there who focuses on promoting Aztec art, symbolism, and culture in his tattoos and creates an intentional space for his clients to reconnect with their ancestral pre-Hispanic heritage. From the initial prayer offering to finished product, we see Chamuco at work creating art that is both a sacrifice as well as medicine.

@Jimmy Kruse Settling is not colonisation. Colonisation is a specific form of invasion into a people's land and subsequent ethnically based oppression of said people. It is a unique practice, coinciding with the development of 'racial science'. You can't just call everything colonialism to excuse what European powers did.

Kichwa(Inca) is still widely spoken in Ecuador and Peru, partially in Bolivia since some of the people speak Aymara and the Mayan pueblos still exist, there are 14 different mayan peoples, as far north as Veracruz State, Tabasco, Chiapas, the Yucatan peninsula on into Guatemala. 3 percent I agree. I’m a Chicano. My parents are from Guerrero and both speak Nahuatl. Spanish is a secondary language to them. To say every Mexican is Aztec is incorrect. Not every Mexican carries indigenous blood in them. The fact that prison tattoos use Aztec culture and made it seem into something negative really bothers me, it’s funny how probably some of them don’t have an ounce of native blood in them, even if they are Mexican , yet they carry Aztec culture tattoos. See this is my culture and to think that I can’t get a tattoo depicting my culture because people associate it with prison tattoos and having to earn these tattoos by putting in work is flat out stupid.

@@AngelCruz-fv7te I agree with you 100 percent bro. These tattoos have been associated with gangs because these f*cking cholos ruined the image. You're correct not all Mexicans are Aztec. From my understanding the Mexica Empire was in central mexico. The Northside of Mexico had different tribes and near Yucatan you had the Mayans. Do you speak nahuatl? My coworker is from Guerrero too and he speaks nahuatl with his wife. He told me that he faced discrimination in Mexico for speaking that language. If I were this tattoo artist I would start decolonization by changing my spanish surname to an indegenious one. Funny how you have these white Mexicans with aztec tattoos. Last time I was in Mexico I was in las pirámides de Tenochtitlán and I was gifted a once in a life time experience to walk behind the scenes where our ancestors used to live and I was gifted some Aztec artifacts the archeologists told me “ keep them as a reminder of where you come be proud of who you are” I will never forget her words. 7 of my 8 tattoos are by Chamuco, the first 1 almost 17 years ago. I sincerely respect his growth as an artist and even more as a human being. Like many others in my community of East Oakland , I was brought to America at a very young age. Through hard work and determination, our Citizenship was achieved and the American dream was within our grasp, all it took was seamless assimilation. Unfortunately, it also came at a cost. Criticized for speaking English well while my Spanish had an accent. Being told I wasn’t Mexican enough for Mexico and not American enough for America. I found myself feeling alienated from those around me, like some unwanted mutt without a place to truly call home. Places like Amor Eterno offer acceptance, love with honesty and without judgement. Thank you so much for helping our community connect to those things which many of us have lost. I can only imagine how many more like me feel proud and empowered by places like #amoreternoarte and people like Sal and Amy.

Just as tragic, discrimination continues in Mexico/Latin America...the Mex gvt. recognizes over 56 Native groups/people (Hispanics/MESTIZOS are nearly 90%), but natives are one of the most marginalized/austrasized people in Mexico... Native languages are being killed off in Mexico today as in the past when the Spanish ruled....saludos.

Mixtec Jaguar my moms side of the family comes in all shades of color, i have prim@s from blond hair green/blue eyes, to bronze Native color, my dads side is pure Wixaritari, we discriminate each other by skin tone, some are embarrassed by our past or indigenous culture. I’m only 21, learned i was Wixaritari when my grandpa died, since then I’ve acknowledged my Native roots and try to teach more brothers and sisters about whom we are, how we are much Native to this land, unlike the English, Spanirds, and French. Used Christianity and Catholicism as a weapon to destroy our Native culture, religions, and languages. We can still bring back our Indigenous culture, but people belittle us and call us stone age people, i call bull. May Takutzi Nakawe protect you and your family brother, Saludos from Arkansas 🦌

@@sumaru_2324 I don't want to strip you of any piece of your culture. All that i've seen about your culture in a documentary seems to me beautiful beyond comprehension. Wirikuta... I'm jealous to be honest. Maybe once (centuries ago) we had an ancient culture involving the use of sacred plants/mushrooms here in germany too. But these roots were cut by the church quite effectively i guess. :( Hallucinations are in mainstream western culture (and beyond) something that is associated with madness/sickness, and is therefore seen as something bad to avoid at all cost. I don't want to assess this fact (i know its quite disputable), but it is as it is in fact. Therefore i think the term "hallucinogen" is rather a disservice for how these sacred medicines are seen by the big majority of people.

Just got my very first tattoo , and I had the great luck to find an artist who does traditional handpoke. He specializes in ancient motives throughout Europe, from the stone age to early middle ages. While he made my tattoo his wife pulled out her drum to do a little ritual music for protection. I was suprized by this but It calmed me right down, and at some point I didn't really feel the pain anymore. Since I come from a country where we don't really connect to any ancestral traditions anymore, and to be frank don't even know anything about them, I am always so in awe (and a little jealous) when I learn about the deep connection some people around the world have to their roots. It's just so amazing to see. Seeing the tatoo as something like medicine is a very beautiful concept, since for many it really is! My first tattoo is also a reminder for my dead loved ones. Some have tatooes to remind them of things in life they have overcome. They are marks of our greatest milestones in life. And honoring this with a ritual is such a fundamentally human thing to do. Well I can't really claim, that this little bit of drumming at my first session is in any form a propper ancestral ritual, but this simple sound somehow connected me to a little bit of that very calm feeling of "belonging". I think your work is very beautiful, and the way you honor your culture with your craft is truly amazing. Greetings from the other side of the pond :)

Great video man. I'm a Danish history student and one of my main focuses is the history of the Aztecs. I honoured my interest and commitment to the studies of Aztec history, and even religion, by getting the Aztec calendar stone as a chest piece and a jaguar warrior on my shoulder. I'm not a native of Mexico, but I believe that the Aztec culture was lost for the worst of reasons, and I feel saddened by the destruction of Tenochtitlan and it's surroundings. I represent the history of the Aztecs on my body, so that other people might find it interesting too and spread the word of the lost culture. Hope to meet you one day.
