I own a real Fouga Magister Patrouille de France, and I use this version for simulation. It is very realistic and well done.

Wonderful François, I’m sure it’s a marvellous aircraft to own and a unique piece of history at that! I’ll pin your comment, so that others can see the opinions of someone that’s actually flown the jet. All the best : )

That’s really cool to hear! I’m thinking of buying it, I recently bought the F14 by DC Desings but it wasn’t that realistic so I ended up refunding it so I’m kind of interested in getting the Magister instead so could you recommend it?

I've seen another review by another real Fouga Pilot - In the video, he says that the plane in the simulation is a little bit over powered. What do you think about it ? (review in french here : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MwT7cIw_FkY.html)

Awesome that someone got around to making this. I don't know too much about the Magister but I do quite like its kind of odd design. Jet trainers are always a pleasure to fly due to simplicity and agility. Great video!

Completely agree Mark, jet trainers are always great fun to fly and it’s nice to have another, slightly more unusual one in the sim. Initially I actually wasn’t too sure about the Magister’s aesthetics myself, but it’s growing on me haha. AzurPoly’s offering is certainly a beautiful rendition of the aircraft at any rate, Glad you enjoyed the video! All the best : )

A cautionary point to make (that I failed to specifically mention during the review), the cockpit labelling is entirely in French! This may be of interest to you, if your French is anywhere near as good as mine. . . ; ) On another note; can anyone tell me why on earth the Magister's front tyre is shaped such as it is? Cheers everyone! : )
@davidh7280
@davidh7280 2 года назад
That cut away front tyre? That would reduce the rolling resistance? Don't know about the grip on wet runway, but perhaps they intentionally wanted less grip? Certainly a puzzle that one! Hey it looks a nicely modelled sim! Maybe someone will model an internal set of pilots so you can see your buddy?
@WellsSullivan

Maybe it's a solid tire? I've seen tailwheels that look like that, which are solid rubber. But, I dunno for sure.
@Part_121
@Part_121 2 года назад
I've never seen an aircraft tire like that, but I wonder if it's supposed to operate like reverse chines? The 727 had a nose tire with chines to deflect runway water outward & down in an effort to keep that water/debris from going up, over the wings and into engines 1 &3. I wonder if the Magister tire, having a channel in the middle, sort of funnels runway water down the center for the same purpose?

@asawyer2872 2 года назад
@@Part_121 The tailwheel on the Mosquito is of the same design
@rolanddutton4723
@rolanddutton4723 2 года назад
It's used to reduce shimmy (oscillating around the caster axis like a busted shopping trolley). You find it on old tail draggers with a non-locking rear wheel. I'm guessing the Magister has a free castering nosewheel (ie steer using differential breaking at low speed) so the wheel design will reduce nose shimmy.

Yes. From what I can find online, the landing light lens is smooth. There's multi LED versions for replacement but that appears as an array of yellowish "jewels" inside the globe. Added in Edit: I notice in all of your videos that when you check the flight controls in fore/aft/port/starboard and then rudders. Not that it matters and it's really an esoteric and philosophical discussion but my instructor taught me to "box" the controls to check for binding. The way that works is, with a stick, go forward corner to corner, aft corner to corner and simultaneously actuate rudder pedals. Works the same with a yoke but the "feel" is different. Do this until you can visualize the responding control surfaces. Forty year old instruction applied in very low real world time so take it for what it's worth.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 года назад
I thought that might well be the case, thanks very much for the info Kyle! The texture used / lacking obviously doesn’t stand out too badly from the rest of the jet and I was certainly being a bit picky, but I thought it was interesting to note at any rate. You make a very valid point re the flight controls and I’ve seen a number of different methods over the years. There are really 2 reasons why I do it that way in the sim; 1) it’s a little bit easier to manage with the camera such that it is etc. In reality of course one has peripheral vision and it’s easy to move ones head around rapidly 2) it’s a little bit of a hang-up from the Airbus, where each flight control is checked very specifically in turn (although elevator is first to be checked, whereas I generally check ailerons first in my videos). Thanks very much for the suggestion though, again I certainly think it’s a valid one. Cheers and all the best! : )

Thanks for the review, thorough as always! It looks like a really interesting plane, and beautiful too! But it's a shame about the few issues. Hopefully they sort those out. I might end up nabbing this on sale as I've got the MB-339 and although they look quite different, I'm not sure I really need two aerobatic/trainer jets... They're kind of the same role.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 года назад
Cheers Will! Yeah, certainly another interesting little addition to the sim. I’m rather enjoying the fact that we’re getting a decent number of somewhat more unusual aircraft in MSFS. I saw that AzurPoly recently patched up one of their sceneries, so hopefully they’re a dev that continues to support their products and the CM.170 will see some “tweaking”. On sale it’s definitely worth a look; if AzurPoly can improve the flight model, I’d say it’s a really nice little jet. It is fairly similar to the MB339 in terms of its role though for sure and currently the MB339 is more fun to fly overall. All the best! : )

Hi Isaac, Interestingly, a real-world Magister owner commented on the video and stated that the addon actually flies quite true to life (to the point that he actually uses it for training even). So my guess would be that I should have adjusted the CofG to somewhere between the default and “within limits” and that might have helped. He also stated that I got the landing technique all wrong haha, but unfortunately didn’t elaborate any further and obviously the manual doesn’t offer any guidance, so it’s a bit tricky to know what exactly I ought to change there. . . As usual, a very nice review. Totally agree on the flight model, the aircraft feels too buttery. No buffets, no bad habits whatsoever (aside from approach) which is what I believe you are describing as "too much MS flight simulator" in character. Mushy stall, no spins. Perhaps Azurpoly will come up with a replacement flight model to sharpen it up a bit but who knows, having never flown the real thing perhaps it's correct as is? 🤔 In all other respects I love the model, first class work. Thanks again for the review.

Thanks very much Gary! Yes, that was very much my assessment, but an educated guess of course. Interestingly, one real-world Magister owner did post on the video and he reckons the AzurPoly version performs very true to life (to the point that he uses it for training) - so presumably AzurPoly actually did a great job with the flight model and it just feels a little bit odd to the uninitiated haha. If it is true to life, then fair enough! As you say, in all other respects AzurPoly have done a great job with the aircraft anyway! Thanks again and have a great weekend : )

Thanks for the review, subscribed. I'm not a pilot so I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I'm a snob when it comes to flight sims, for example I like how the JF Hawk feels and I spend most of my time in DCS. Hopefully as time goes on developers will be able to get rid of a bit of that "MSFS feel" in flight models.

Hi Josef, thanks very much and welcome aboard! : ) Haha, I think many of us are “flight sim snobs”. I love the Hawk and indeed almost anything DCS is good (DCS still has the best overall flight modelling of any sim in my opinion). I think MSFS will still progress in the right direction. In fact the devs put out a recent update, outlining the next round of aerodynamics changes to the sim - it sounds promising. Thanks again and all the best!

@@IntotheBlueSimulations yes! Once the SDK and the sim itself matures I think we'll see higher fidelity stuff. If it takes a year or two? Well, we have an instant gratification society but good results are worth the wait. There's definitely a market segment willing to spend money on high end products that become part of your gaming life instead of toys you play with a couple times and move on from. I've watched more of your reviews and really appreciate your objectivity. The MSFS addon ecosystem does not have my trust because products vary so wildly. That makes sense, because the wide variety of players has a huge spectrum of desires and expectations, but I've found myself unwilling to try many new addons. I feel that higher end developers have an opportunity to gain loyalty to the point where I'd buy pretty much anything they offered that I'm remotely interested in (that is not a challenge to empty my wallet JF). As an example, I never would have thought I'd get the DCS Mirage, Viggen, or Spitfire but they're all excellent. For the price of a couple nights at the tavern I can have a nice product I'll be able to enjoy for years. Looking forward to reviews in the future. Cheers!

Hi Martijn, A very pertinent point and I did consider that myself. In this particular case though, the gauge is actually marked in knots (Noeuds). Fun fact, the Fouga Magister was used by the Katanga breakaway government in the Siege of Jadotville (Congo) in the 1960's against Irish UN peacekeeping force. It was sent there to bomb the UN troops who were dug in. Subsequently the Irish Government purchased a number of Fouga Magisters for the Irish Air Corps and were in service for years and were also used by the Irish Defence forces display team called the Silver Swallows. Seen them a good few times. They are all retired now but there is one on display in Dublin at Collins Barracks Museum.
@matsadona
@matsadona 2 года назад
That siege was one of the reasons why Dag Hammarskjold asked for a UN air wing. I believe they had three Magisters in total, but only one was operational, using machine guns to pin down the Irish ground troops. Eventually there was a Swedish detachment with Saab J29 in Congo, disabling the Katanga air forces. As far as I know their aircrafts where destroyed on the ground though, in strikes together with Canberras from India. I.e. no aerial combat. To bad the J29 is only available in Warthunder...

Thanks very much Wikstrom, glad you enjoyed it! If I recall correctly, I did have quite a bit of nose-up trim in there, but any higher and the aircraft felt like it was about to stall. I suspect I might have been better to set the CofG somewhere between the default value and “within limits” (which then tipped the aircraft on its tail). Also, according a real-world Magister pilot, I had the landing technique all wrong haha, so I’m sure that made a difference. Without the proper documentation to explain how to fly the aircraft, of course all I could really do was go with the limited information I did have (approach speed) and guess the rest. Cheers! I purchased the Fouga, too, and I fully agree with you. It's a fun and honestly beautifully modelled plane to fly in the sim but I question the actual realism of the flight characteristics. A V-Tail normally behaves very unstable around the vertical axis, tap the rudder and let it go the nose will swing around a couple of times. Also these long wings would create a noticable banking when one wing swings forward. So I would have expected it much more wobbly but I can't speak about this aircraft from personal experience of course, but I also find the elevator very heavy on approach. I found 120 kts to be a great speed over the numbers but the high Alpha break wasn't possible there either. The CG is quite off in the load menu, maybe that's a cause? In general terms I really love this plane though, all above if I compare the value for that money to other turbine aircraft that have recently been released. Namely compared to the Twin Otter, AzurPoly have created a beautifully mixed and absolutely immersive sound set. The 3D model is superb, the cockpit looks beautiful. There are some very significant bugs in the gauges, the artificial horizon shows around 1/2 bank and 2 times the pitch or so, the VSI is incorrect and when I dialed in the Kodiak VOR last night it wanted to send me somewhere towards the west all the time when the VOR was at 190 degrees. The devs will certainly have to update it, I hope this won't take months with that market place exclusivity. It's a nice addon over all and I already know I won't just park it in the hangar. The rudder: I assume you have seen the recent Q&A with Asobo where they demonstrated their new implementation of propeller physics and the effect of prop wash on the airplane. Together with this "new stream of air" they almost HAVE to rework the rudder. I can't imagine how this should work when the added airflow will hit the currently oversensitive rudder. I won't hold my hopes up high to make sure I'm not disappointed but Asobo MUST rework the rudder physics at some point. Their flight model(s) have improved a lot but this is one still glaring flaw. Fingers crossed!

You can keep this plane in the air for hours if you use the same mechanics as a glider. Use the engine to gain some height, find the thermal updraft, engine to idle - you can even turn it off I think -, glide, repeat.

i think i've seen that twitching from FSRealistic in other aircraft. it's possibly their attempt to induce head bob/airframe shudder by manipulating the camera. i seem to recall the devs saying that (as per usual) SDK limitations prevented them doing a proper implementation.

@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 года назад
You’re most probably right then Bernard, hadn’t seen that one myself before. . . I believe you’re correct regarding the SDK as well, hence why FSRealistic has quite a bit less functionality than its X-Plane counterpart. Cheers! : )

Hi Andy, Apologies for the slow reply. I guess you'll have seen for yourself by now (I'm afraid I haven't had the time to test that for you up until now). It was the same with the FSReborn Sting S4 actually; the dev there said there was some little bug with the wind noise going over the landing gear (fixed now). Maybe it's intentional on AzurPoly's part - they are pretty small jets on the CM.170 and the canopy isn't the most aerodynamic. . . All the best! : )

My pleasure Andy! I don’t know whether it’s realistic or not to be honest. They obviously aren’t all that comparable, but most of what you can hear upfront on a commercial jet is air noise. @IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 года назад
Thanks very much Damon! Oooo, that’s a tough one actually. . . Both are very nice offerings, done to broadly the same standard - each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Graphically the MB339 has the edge externally, the Magister has the edge internally. The Magister wins in the sound department. Systems are about on a par between the two aircraft (maybe the Magister has a little edge there). Flight models are probably broadly on a par with one another. Right now, if I could only choose one, I would say the MB339 has the edge. It’s more fun to fly and has a bit more performance up its sleeve. The MB339 feels more like something you might fly in the military, the Magister feels like something you might plausibly get your hands on at the weekend. I hope that all helps a bit. Cheers Damon, you’re most welcome! Yeah, that is a really tough one actually. AzurPoly also just updated the Magister and improved its flight modelling somewhat (mostly related to takeoff and landing), so that makes it an even closer fight. Planning on having a video up of that on Tuesday, if that might aide your decision at all. I still think the MB339 just nips it; another nice thing about the jet is that you get a couple of different variants (tip tanks vs wing tanks etc). Best of luck deciding! ; )

I got this aircraft recently, but relatively often, it seems like the engines are losing power. Like they're almost cutting out for like a second or so, then coming back on. Think it mostly happens on full throttle. Is this normal and realistic behavior of maybe being on full throttle for too long or something? I haven't experienced this with any other jets I own for the sim. Thank you in advance, and apologize if it's a stupid question! :)

Hi Sebastian, Hmm, that's strange (and certainly not a silly question!). I would have said maybe a hardware calibration issue, but probably not if it only happens with the Magister. I haven't flown the aircraft for a little while, so maaaybe AzurePoly updated the engine modelling, but I doubt it (and I'd imagine these engines can more or less run at "full chat" all day long anyway). You aren't flying inverted at the time or anything? Are you still having the same issues? Cheers and all the best : )

Hello Colonel, To be fair, AzuryPoly tweaked the flight model quite a bit after the aircraft’s initial release. I’m not sure whether the takeoff performance has been brought closer towards what you describe but, certainly the control response was improved and I seem to recall, smoothed out a bit also. Looks like a pretty cool plane but the all French is a no go for me sadly. I'm obviously glad to see international developers as it brings a personal side to these aircraft but with my disabilities the cockpit labels are so important as I just can't remember what does what in more than 2, maybe 3 if simple/clean looking, cockpits so to not have an English language pack with it sadly put it in the inaccessible category for me. Looking forward to watching the video none the less and will keep an eye out if the lack of translation changes

It's a little bit of a shame isn't it! I know some other planes like the Piaggio P149D has a little flag you can click to change the language from German to English. They could have included English on the in game tablet as an option
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 года назад
Yeah, a rather nice effort from AzurPoly overall and according to at least one Magister pilot, it flies closer to reality than I would have guessed. I can totally see where you’re coming from on the language - I always struggle a little bit as well. Of course the french are proud of their language and I wouldn’t expect them to anglicise the plane just to make all of us English-speakers happy, but perhaps a discreet little option to change the language (as we saw on the P149D) might be nice and I’m sure it would have addon appeal to more people. Hope you enjoyed the video! Have a great weekend : )

I think you are confusing the clean behavior of the Fouga Magister with a Microsoft FS behavior. The CM170 is very very hard to spin, and you had the landing procedure totally wrong. The simulation is actually pretty close to the handling characteristic of the Fouga
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 года назад
It wasn’t so much that I was “confusing” anything François; I did sate during the video that it was pure conjecture on my part (never having flown the jet) and did also mention that it perhaps could be correct behaviour for the aircraft, given that it’s a trainer. Obviously it’s not possible to have flown every aircraft I’ve reviewed on the channel, so a lot of my assessments come down to “educated guesses” ; ) The same goes for the landing really. As the product manual doesn’t actually cover any techniques for flying the aircraft, I was a bit in the dark on that one. All it stated was 120kts on approach, so that’s what I went with. If you’d care to elaborate on what I did wrong / the correct technique, I’d love to know : ) It’s great to know that in actuality the flight model is pretty accurate. It seems AzurPoly did a great job with the Magister overall then! It might be nice if they padded out the manual a little more and then we could all fly the jet correctly. Merci François. Of course Geoffrey. I felt like a numpty that I forgot to mention it during the video haha! For sure the French are very proud of their language and I can see why they’re reticent to let anglicisation creep into everything. I think a nice discreet option to switch between French and English would be much appreciated by many users though - I’m sure more than a couple of people will be put off purchasing, due to the somewhat “intimidating” nature of the foreign cockpit.
