Great photography of a great airplane. As a kid I remember these flying over my house every day during the war. Your video sure brings back memories.

especially when they look like they just rolled off the assembly line. we must fly these aircraft but take the utmost absolute care to prevent the looses that have happened in the last few years. we cannot have anymore nine-o-nine, liberty bell, or texas raiders incidents anymore. NO MORE HULL LOSSES.

Inspiring. My father trained as a radio operator and gunner on Flying Forts during WWII. He's passed now and so have most of the B-17s. Kudos to all who keep these flying monuments to the Greatest Generation air worthy.

Im 27 and my Grandpa was a pilot of a B-17 just like that one. His was Silver like that too. Flew over 20 missions and survived through 1944 and 1945. One mission, he saw ME-262 Jets attack. He wrote "I didn't know what the Hell was attacking us. It was faster than anything ive ever seen." But he made it.

One time I was out at one of the islands on Lake Erie and the Liberty Aviation Museum had an air show. I always look up when I hear a plane fly over to see if it’s a historic warbird. This time, when I looked up, I saw a B-17 fly over. It was a really cool experience. Later that year, I found out about a guy in my Native American tribe, James Parker, that was a tail gunner on a B-17 in the war, and flew over 50 missions over Europe. His brother, Bill, was in the 116/29th Infantry on D-Day and is known as the first man on Omaha Beach. At the same air show at the LAM, I got to fly on a C-47, “Hairless Joe”, which was in the China-India-Burma Campaign. In WWII, my great grandfather was a paratrooper in the 509th PIR at North Africa, the 82nd at Sicily, and the 101st at Normandy, Holland, Belgium, and Germany. Another guy in my Tribe, Jake McNiece, led the “Filthy 13” in WWII. You can find plenty information on him.

I flew on her back in 2008 at Wings & Wheels at Teterboro Airport in NJ... My Great Uncle Nicholas A. Cannata was a right waist gunner on the Yankee Do Dit, it was shot down on 3/18/44 10 miles NNE of Trieste, Italy doing a bombing run on the Villaorba Airfield. 7 jumped, the pilot, co-pilot and navigator died on impact. Uncle Nicky spent the rest of the war as a POW in Stalag Luft 1.... Sadly he passed away about 6yrs ago. He was the youngest of 5 brothers & 2 sisters. Uncle Charlie and Uncle Jimmy were both in the Guadal Canal in WW2.

Flew on the Liberty Belle 15 years ago. Was worth every dollar. 30 min flight over Pittsburgh and my childhood home. Too bad the Belle was destroyed a few years later.

i also flew on liberty bell. it's very sad; the aircraft could have been saved but the fire dept didnt want to get their shiny trucks dirty. nine-o-nine didnt need to go either. i believe these things should be flown, BUT we MUST treat them like the queens they are. short cutting maintenance like the collings foundation was doing is grossly incompetent, dangerous, and causes the loss of life and priceless artifacts that are nearly gone.

Their was music. A chorus line by Pratt & Whitney ;-). Never understood why at airshows they insist on blaring patriotic or nostalgic music :-P. Not that I don't like Glenn Miller (I do actually..), just when seeing rare warbirds not 'In the mood' for such. Not there to hear (any) recordings, I'm there to hear the aircraft play live..

My father was an aircraft mechanic in WW2 when it was the army air force. He worked on B17s. He aquired the small homelite 2 cycle battery charging engine that came out of the tail of the B17S. It was 28 volt 30 amp unit. Had an aircraft spark plug. A centrifugal throttle and governed at 3600 rpm. I still have the engine minus the generator.

One evening a few yrs ago I was out flying my RC Spitfire. The sun was low behind the trees orange sky and all. As I brought my spit back around I heard what sounded like beating oil drums. Just then information with my spit just off the left wing a B-17 appeared. Man my hair stood on end that was soooo dam cool. The 17 was returning from an airshow some place and heading to Atlanta. It wasn't like right next to my spitfire but lined up just right in my line of sight and popped out from behind the trees just as I finished my bank. Pretty cool.

This is a correct way to fly an old antique warbird and its done properly without things like low level high speed passes that nearly hit the ground like was done in the 1961 movie THE WAR LOVER piloted by STEVE MCQUEEN in which he flew around the base doing things nobody is or was supposed to do and today if you do this sort of thing then your wings on your shirt lapel will be torn off and be doing desk duty for 6 months to maybe a year there.

Absolutely brilliant. Monumental aircraft vital for the liberation of so many ( incl Europe). So manny young guys died. Respect. What worries me as an engineer is the fact that perhaps it is time to retire these old birds. More will get lost when continue flying them. It is a diabolical dilemma I know. But you can’t go in flying them for eternity so I suppose it should come to a stop at one point.
