B-18 bomber Crash Site - Woodstock, NH 4K

January 14th, 1942: A B-18 bomber was returning from U-Boat patrol off the Atlantic when it encountered a blizzard and was blown 400 miles off course. When they got a break in the cloud cover, the crew saw a city below. Believing it to be Providence, RI, they turned north thinking they were headed home to their army air field in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, that city was actually Concord, NH, and their flight path took them directly into NH's White Mountains. Miraculously, when the plane eventually crashed into the side of Mt. Waternomee, 5 of the 7 crew would survive to be rescued by local mountaineers from nearby Woodstock and Lincoln, who cut their way up the side of the mountain, in a blizzard, with no idea exactly what happened beyond people in the village below hearing 3 explosions on the mountainside.
The crash site, being fairly remote, is now a protected archaeological site, and remains fairly untouched as an out-of-the-way memorial of WWII. You won't find it advertised on any travel brochures, or on any lists of top places to visit in the state, but hundreds of people make the climb every year to plant flags, and remember those who gave everything for their country.
You can find more info about the site from this article published in NH Magazine: www.nhmagazine...

Hike with a piece of history! I’m a historian by education and I love those! Especially if they take you to a hidden gem like this one. It’s not much left from the wreckage, but you still get the sense how much effort the rescuing crew need to put into rescuing the surviving men. Thanks for sharing this interesting story about that crash and keeping the memory of this minor WW2 event alive.

Thanks for viewing, glad you enjoyed. We are also partial to our fellow adventuring channels that go the extra mile to talk about the history of the places they visit. There's a channel that commented on this video as well, Tea in Valhalla, and they usually take a moment to talk about the history of some of the landmarks they pass in Britain. If you haven't seen their channel, we would suggest checking them out. There was actually more wreckage, but our GoPro took a crap and we lost almost 5 minutes of video. Both engines are still largely in tact, some of the wreckage is mostly buried, and it is VERY spread out. The whole plane really came apart on impact, we still can't figure out how anyone survived, let alone 5 out of the 7 crew. We also know that there were bombs on board that did not detonate in the crash, and a demolitions team had to go up and set them off, because there was no way to get them down safely. Not sure what effect that had on what was left to that point.

My Dad was PFC Richard Chubb, the flight mechanic on this bomber. He was just 19 years old on January 14, 1942, a few days shy of his 20th birthday. I made this hike a couple times in 1992, first with my 3 children and later that year solo. Thank you for this video. ❤️

Always sad to see a crash site, especially when you know lives have been lost. Looked a bit of a rough hike up to the site, with a sting in the tail for the last 500 yards. It was nice to see people had left mementoes and respected the site, as it should be. Thank God for the brave men and women who make the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom. Cheers Alan

Yes, that last bit up is a bit of a sufferfest. Goes straight up the side, no angles to soften the grade, but then if you're trying to save lives, there's no time for switchbacks. We certainly owe a lot to these folk we can never really repay with more than our thanks, and respect.

Yes there is. The fellow that broke his back getting wrapped around a tree in that crash got back in a plane as soon as they would let him. I think most people these days would take that ticket right out of the service, but not him. Sadly, he died a couple years later getting shot down in the Pacific campaign. We were talking about him with some other people that were visiting the site, and they said the same thing you did. People had different ideas about things like honor and duty at the time.

Nice wee walk! Enjoyed the back story and was thinking that we have similar WW2 aircraft crash sites on the hills in Scotland. I am always amazed at how well preserved these wreckage are. I was surprised at the amount of that plane is still there! Your right it is amazing that anyone walked out of that alive! I think there is a movie in this story.....brilliant! Paul
@northeastfamilyadventures9186
@northeastfamilyadventures9186 3 года назад
Thank you Paul. It was a lovely wee walk until the last half mile. Then it turned into a wee slog of putting one foot in front of the other and not looking up to see how much farther there was to go! Aircraft aluminum does not rust, and they apparently did not build planes in that time period to be biodegradable. What surprised us the most was how well the paint on the wing has stood up to almost 80 years of blasting wind, rain, ice and snow. We're fair certain many of the rocks on that site have weathered away more than that wreckage. The remoteness of the site, and possibly a foreboding sign left by the Forest Service warning of severe consequences should someone be caught disturbing the site have also helped no doubt. We would LOVE it if you could take a wee walk to any site you have in Scotland that might be similar. Surely you guys had far more plane crashes in your area than we did during the war.

And thanks for coming along! I've learned this week that we're actually quite fortunate to have such a recognizable wreck where most of the plane is still there. People have been telling us that out west salvagers have gone and reclaimed most of the aluminum from a lot of the plane wrecks out there, leaving nothing behind but a few scraps. The difficulty in getting to it and the low profile before it was officially recognized in the 1990's as an archaeological site probably helped a lot. That it crashed in the snow might also have done wonders to keep the fire damage to a minimum, and been responsible for so many of the crew surviving as well.

@northeastfamilyadventures9186
@northeastfamilyadventures9186 3 года назад
Thanks for watching Paul! Funny thing, but after the upload, we've learned even more about the crash. A lady that lives near us, her uncle was part of the rescue team. She shared with us the story, that the night of the crash, the State Police went up to try and keep folk from going up into the mountain. When the Search and Rescue guys showed up, the police initially tried to stop them from going up, saying there was no way anyone could have survived. They didn't listen, obviously, and made their way up. Hate to think what would have happened if they'd allowed themselves to get turned back. Her uncle passed in 1976, so unfortunately we'll never get to ask him to tell us his story, but it's kind of incredible to think of someone doing something so profound, that 80 years later, complete strangers are sitting down having a chat about it long after they've gone.

Thanks guys. Sorry for the delay in response, but we were up another mountain today. JR would like you to know that after great effort, while getting blasted in a snow squall, he was able to locate the "Trig Point" or "Triangulation Station" as we call them. It was mortared to a rock, on a mountain top covered in rocks. Keep your eyes out in a couple weeks for a video about Mt. Moosilauke, you'll have a shoutout... providing our GoPro doesn't eat the video.

@northeastfamilyadventures9186 3 года назад
Thanks Kathy! The story is a sad one, but it's a lot of other things as well. None of the survivors are alive today, most would be over 100 if they were. Reading the plaque left by Fletcher Craig's family after he passed in 2008 really drove home for me what a huge impact the efforts of the rescuers had on the lives of the survivors. None of them were in good shape, and to get them off the mountain to live and fight another day was no small thing. Even the guy with a broken back recovered and was flying again in a few months. It's just mind blowing.

Really nice video. An interesting place to visit. I really thought it was neat seeing all the flags around the site. A nice waterfall there too!
@northeastfamilyadventures9186
@northeastfamilyadventures9186 3 года назад
Yeah, that waterfall was completely unexpected. It was massive as well. It was in a ravine and not easy to get to from the trail, but it was well over 100 feet with multiple channels. The GoPro is not very good at capturing detail from that far back, but if I can get to the foot of it, I think there would be some great shots. This time, I wasn't quite sure what I was in for on the way up and didn't want to sap myself bushwacking that ravine. The flags that so many people bring up really add atmosphere to a site that's already ripe with it.

Really cool backstory to the hike. As always, the NH (and Northern states like VT for that matter) has some amazing/beautiful trails. I’m really surprised that the US Army Air (I believe that’s what it was at the time) painted logo is still showing. Great video as always!
@northeastfamilyadventures9186
@northeastfamilyadventures9186 3 года назад
The whole site is remarkably well preserved. Possibly a combination of being covered in snow half the year, the trees keeping a lot of direct sunlight off it, and that there aren't a ton of people to paw their hands all over it have kept it that way. The difficulty in accessing the site prevented it from being salvaged like a lot of other crash sites from that era were, and now that the USFS has designated it a protected site, it never should be in the future. As to the trail, considering there is no one that maintains it, it's in remarkable shape. It's considered an unofficial trail. the ribbons were put there by a good Samaritan a few years ago to help keep people from getting lost. Until portable GPS became a thing, we're told that folk looking for the site were just as likely to end up lost as to find it. Even today, the trail is practically invisible in spots after the river crossing except for the ribbons.
@LazyBushcrafters
@LazyBushcrafters 3 года назад
@@northeastfamilyadventures9186 I can see people getting lost there. It looks like some places are decent from foot traffic and some locations you would have to think a bit about which way to go. We have some trails here that are well marked but still easily could be missed. Hopefully the ribbons are easily identifiable! I don’t understand people who would want to loot things. It’s just wrong especially if someone died on that site.

The entire site is a thing of it's own. It's not a typical war memorial (obviously) and it has its own vibe and traditions. There is a tradition here of placing a flag on the grave of a veteran. A cemetery caretaker would normally see things tidied up. Most people that visit this site, bring a flag and plant is as a sign of respect for the fallen. There's no association of volunteers to maintain the site, or the trail, though there is a notice left by the Forest Service warning of dire legal consequences if anyone is found vandalizing the site, or attempting to remove any part of the wreckage. It's also quite remote. I know there are a couple people who will go up and replace the larger flags once they become too worn, and the smaller ones will get cleaned up once they become too faded as well, but no one will touch any in good condition, and there are a lot left every year.

Thanks for visiting. Plane crashes like this are both sad and cool at the same time. Sad the crash happened, but lucky on the location which made it practically impossible for it to be looted, or carted off for the aluminium. At the rate it is not deteriorating, it might still be there in another 100 years for people to visit. A lot of more accessible crashes from that era were looted and scrapped for the metal, leaving nothing but a few bits and bobs.
