As an active controller (commenting in a private capacity here, not speaking officially) and as a pilot, it's almost unbelievable that a controller would say no to a pilot with a declared emergency. There would have to be a truly compelling safety threat for a controller to even think about saying no. Even if a controller thought that the pilot was faking an emergency for some reason, we should still approve the pilot's request and any potential fakery can get sorted out later.

Glad to hear ATC perspective on an av video. I figure that, as govt employees, you're liable to receive the proverbial ton o' bricks if you say anything that's not precisely on centerline of the "straight & narrow." Since you stuck your neck out I think it would be could if you or a colleague could participate in an interview (anonymously? Remote sans video?) with the hangar-dwellers of this channel, with Scott Purdue, or some other channel, with a "5 or 10 most common" subject like: - ways GA pilots make the ATC job hard - things GA pilots most need to (re-)learn about ATC - ATC-Involved situations GA pilots are least prepared for. Maybe you have some own thoughts. Either way, Thanks for keeping the bent aluminum from falling on my mailbox!

@@77thTrombone Thanks for the thanks. Myself and other controllers already work hard to improve pilot-controller communications in a variety of ways. Sometimes it's official FAA stuff, NATCA (the controller's union) does a lot including with AOPA among others, and others like myself do interviews and talks. After I did one of these talks at AirVenture a few months ago, Dan Millican interviewed me already about some of these kinds of issues (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uPKPHi0c2Yg.html).

The King of Jordan is one hell of a pilot himself with multiple combat sorties in multiple war zones. In addition to loving military & civilian aviation, he is also a huge supporter of tier one special operations units around the world. I’m sure he got quite “kick” out of his unique engine out landing in Las Vegas. Great story !

Had I been flying that day, I would've been tempted to tell the controller that if I couldn't land at Las Vegas then I was going to Nellis instead, since I'm sure they'd have a nicer welcoming party. Watching another channel who puts out videos of interesting ATC interactions and emergencies, it's not the first time I've heard of a LAS TRACON controller getting an attitude when handed an emergency aircraft.

I've seen videos where the pilot was thankful the controller reminded him about something important during the stressful situation so I think controller input can be a good thing as long as the advice is correct. When I was a student pilot I was talked out of flying to Augusta Georgia during the Masters by a controller who stated that due to traffic load it wasn't a good place for a student pilot to be. I hadn't even considered that during my prefllght planning.

There is a story about an incident in wich the pilot in comand (if I recall well I guess it was a Twin Beechcraft) suffered a stroke and passed away. He was an elder Senior, and the person in the right seat declared an emergency to ATC. More than one controller helped this unexpeienced pilot through all the way until the plane landed safely with no other damages. If I remeber correctly, the controllers were awarded, distiguished and placed as an example of good profesionalism. Amazing story from Mr Perdue, BTW. As always, cheers from NE Patagonia, Argentina.
@peteranderson037

I've heard that audio. I think the pilot recent received his PPL and only had time in Cessna 172. The second controller that he talked to was an experienced King Air pilot herself and was able to talk him down. On the other hand, the first controller treated him like an experienced airline pilot who knew what to do and continued vectoring other aircraft while the guy was begging for help. It really took a while for the controller to grasp that the person in the right seat wasn't the SIC, but this was a real "a passenger is flying the plane" kind of situation.
@zidoocfi
@zidoocfi 2 года назад
@@peteranderson037 That was a Beech King Air in 2009, callsign N559DW. When the pilot died, the airplane was climbing on the autopilot, and the first controller (who was not a pilot) had no idea how to program the autopilot to stop the climb. It took a couple of minutes to get a pilot-rated controller to help out, and then the help improved even more from there. As a pilot-rated controller myself, I'll note that most controllers are not pilots themselves, and the vast majority of controllers would not know, and cannot reasonably be expected to know, how to tell a non-pilot how to program an autopilot.

Had an encounter one day with the approach controller going into KPAE (Paine Field, Everett, Washington). I was VFR on top and I'd just lost the vacuum pump (pressure pump, it was a Bonanza). Now I needed to let down through a solid undercast without benefit of gyros. I advised Approach of the situation and requested the ILS 16. His reply was: "Okay." I waited. No vectors. No altitude restriction. No clearance. Nothing. Just, "Okay." Non-pilots are usually overwhelmed by "all the dials" in a typical cockpit. The same holds for radio communications with ATC. How do pilots get all that down, figure it out and then fly it? The secret sauce is knowing what to expect from ATC. Their instructions (usually) fall into nice slots and so the job of hearing, understanding and flying is made a lot easier. But if ATC says, "Bonanza 2111Q, you're cleared for a ham and cheese on rye, side of onion rings, and hold the mayo" my pencil would come to a dead stop. "Huh?" ATC's "Okay" was that kind of moment for me.

I don't know if that controller should be fired but he should at least have gotten called out on the carpet and reprimanded heavily and then required additional training. His first job is safety. Any declared emergency is an automatic first priority with no ambiguity.

Sounds like Scott got a controller that was having a bad day. We're all only human - it happens. Just glad it wasn't a rookie that this controller was talking to - that may have ended badly for everyone. Also glad that incident turned out to have the best outcome possible. Pax walked, and the aircraft lived to fly another day - a win-win!

WIth the exception of one incident, and the controller couldn't have done anything about it anyway, so I can't blame them, I've always had excellent interactions with controllers. But, then again, I was flying in the mid 70s to early 80s, things were slightly different back then. As to this particular controller, what goes around comes around. I'm sure that he will be having a conversation (if it hasn't happened already) with his superiors. At least I hope so. If he doesn't, then someone higher up the chain isn't doing their job. The FAA can't not know about this by now. As to what you can do and can't do, PIC, Pilot In Command. I'll land on the National Mall in D.C. if that's what it takes to keep me and my passengers alive. I'll deal with the consequences after we're safely down, and if ATC doesn't want to do that, then someone needs to re-evaluate their career choices.

My friend Bob Golo crashed, died and burned, in his CE310 out of North Las Vegas, near Henderson, on 29-OCT 2021. Engine failure. G'day, Yay Team ! The factor which may become problematical, as it did in this case, is the the type of person who applies to become an Air Traffic CONTROLLER..., is entirely likely to be somewhat driven by overcompensated Inferiority Complexes..., which is why they crave positions of Authority - whereinat they get to tell other people what to do. When they're well-fed and rested, and not overworked, they can usually maintain an apparently reasonable Affect ; but if they're run a bit ragged then their inner Dictator may well grab control of their Frontal Lobes, and they commence to demand that everybody else has to stand to "ATTENTION !" in neat straight lines, and march around performing the Goose-Step as per the Martinet's dictat. Clearly, Scott encountered one of these intrinsically flawed and dysfunctional individuals when they were feeling rather too possessive of "their" Runway and sacrosanct intentions for the Traffic-Pattern within the Circuit Area. Clearly, that Controller (Kontrol Freak) was past their Use-By Date..., and ideally they were afterwards promptly redeployed to something within their remaining capacities...; refilling the Office Staplers, and emptying the Wastpaper Baskets sounds like the sort of task where that Kontrol Freak should probably not be able to cause any real damage. Unlike what they attempted to make of the occurrence of a vintage Big-Twin Warbird full of International VIPs with a failing/failed Engine, attempting to alight (without lighting up) in a Crosswind... If ever anybody deserved to be retrenched following a review of their performance, then that Kontrol Freak is such a case. Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

If this incident/accident was reported to the NTSB I feel sure that the ATC controller in question is no mystery to NTSB. I think with a little investigation and digging they can easily be found out. He just forgot what his job really was about. Serving the public. Anyone who works for a government agency needs to understand that clearly. If you can't understand that then he needs to find another occupation!
