This online lecture with historian Barry Levine took place via Zoom on Thursday, October 14, 2021.
Levine’s presentation focuses on two aspects of Michigan Aviation history, the fatal crash of a B-52 bomber in Little Traverse Bay in 1971 and the history of the Kincheloe Strategic Air Command base. The crash, tragic as it was, could have been worse. An environmental catastrophe was avoided as the B-52 was about a minute away from the Big Rock Point Nuclear Power Plant. The role Kincheloe Strategic Air Command base played in the Cuban missile crisis, Vietnam, nuclear alert missions and more will also be covered.
