Listen to his playing for the first time i though, whats the big deal with this guy? listened to him again with a more open mind, think hes kinda good realise hes very good Tried to play like him after lots of experience playing different genres and improvising with different types of blues, and though he sounds simple, his style was just waaay out of my vocabulary, i couldnt get it saw him live, and now im obsessed with getting that guitar tone
This wonderful man could not have been born with a better name! He is the KING! I got the privilege of seeing him in concert just one time and I was hooked for life! RIP Mr. King. At least, heaven has been blessed by his arrival. I LOVE the joke at the end of the video.
This particular 'Lucille' is probably my favorite sounding of all the Gibsons that BB King has played. I believe that many of his late 1960s/early 1970s videotaped performances (Live in Africa, Soul Train, Sanford & Son, etc) were done while he was using this guitar. Its also important to note that this Lucille isn't actually black, more like a really dark Tobacco finish. But my, the tone...
catboyzee Yea, I feel ya.. I feel the same way.. Its actually a dark walnut stain ES-345 with gold hardware.. great tone.. He started playing the gibson custom BB King models around 78'. Also at the same time he switched from playing silver face twin reverbs to the Lab Series solid state 2x12. In this video he's playing a brand new (1969) silver face super reverb with JBL speakers. Note the black "JBL Equipped" plate on the bottom right corner. Im a bb fanatic
Cool, thanks for sharing your knowledge. If I were Gibson, I'd seek out this particular guitar and try to build a signature model of it in Mr. King's memory. It was such a great sounding instrument in the master's hands. Respect and RIP BB King.
catboyzee Yes, I actually saw one exactly like it on Ebay about 10 years ago. Said that it was owned by BB King and they were asking $14k. Should've sold everything and bought it, I had a feeling it was THE ONE.
+catboyzee I don't believe that the Lucille you see here is the same one he used while he was in Africa (and so on). I only say that because of the the vibrola unit, take a closer look. I may be wrong but it's just something that stuck out to me. The 1974 one had the socket for the arm, the one here doesn't. Im not saying that he didn't have it replaced or something but I think it would've been highly unlikely, especially since he didn't use the arm.
Pure, no effects, unadulterated straight from the soul guitar playing. That's about as tasty as it gets. It sounds deceptively simple but any guitar player worth his salt will tell you that what you just heard was a master musician at work and there was nothing simple about his playing.
