Riley B. King (September 16, 1925 - May 14, 2015), known professionally as B.B. King, was an American blues singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. He introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending, shimmering vibrato, and staccato picking that influenced many later blues electric guitar players. AllMusic recognized King as "the single most important electric guitarist of the last half of the 20th century".
King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and is one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King of the Blues", and is considered one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" (along with Albert King and Freddie King, none of whom are related). King performed tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing on average at more than 200 concerts per year into his 70s. In 1956 alone, he appeared at 342 shows.
King was born on a cotton plantation of Berclair near the city of Itta Bena, Mississippi, and later worked at a cotton gin in Indianola, Mississippi. He was attracted to music and the guitar in church and began his career in juke joints and local radio. He later lived in Memphis and Chicago; then, as his fame grew, he toured the world extensively. King died at 89 in Las Vegas on May 14, 2015.
Calvin Owens (April 23, 1929 - February 21, 2008) was an American blues trumpeter, bandleader, and composer/arranger. Owens grew up in Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood and was influenced by Louis Armstrong. At various times, Owens worked alongside B.B. King, Pete Mayes, T-Bone Walker, Amos Milburn, David "Fathead" Newman, Arnett Cobb, Junior Parker, Otis Turner, Willie Nelson and Johnny Bush.
Having played professionally in Houston, including at the Eldorado from 1950 to 1953 as well as being the audio and recording director for Peacock Records, Owens was hired by B. B. King in two periods - from 1953 until 1957 and later from 1978 to 1984.
Sometimes known as the Maestro, Owens died on February 21, 2008, from renal failure, at the age of 78.

I just noticed that there are less than 100 likes and less than 3,000 views of this performance here on RU-vid? That is a shame. I wish more people would search out and enjoy BB's music today. He was and is a legend.

Can you imagine any artist today having the courage of this man to host a couple of sing-alongs during such a performance!? It's more courageous than we realize and it's so much fun!!! What a performance.

The bassist and drummer don't get enough credit for laying down those grooves throughout the set.

One of B.B.'s best performances, hands down. The entire band was "on" that night.

Saw Mr. King numerous times in the 70's. Always a great show with very talented and professional musicians. Twice got a pick from him at the end of the show. The best of the best... My demonstration of the lyrics in one of his songs I just heard for the first time. Thinking about my own used to be's...

Saw BB and the band around this time - this show brings back how engaged they were in what they were doing. Then there's that showbiz flare that I wasn't used to seeing in rock concerts. I loved it all so much I headed off to another city to see it all over again.

I stumbled upon this and The Thrill Is Gone as his closer was the best musical moment ever! What a glorious concert. The people of Austin were lucky that night.

I am so glad to find the recording again! I made a copy on VHS during my college days in 1996 from my local PBS in Memphis, TN where I attended college. During my 10 years in Memphis, I would see Mr. King around town from time-to-time. Such a kind soul.... RIP.

I saw this when it originally aired in about early 1983. Recorded the audio from the black and white TV, and have always loved that big bass solo in the instrumental jam. It's great to watch it again in good quality color.

From 7:31 on is one of the best build-ups of energy I've ever heard and felt in any tune. The horn solo is amazing, and how B.B. takes flight from it is even more incredible. And those minor notes B.B. hits just perfectly and exactly right make the energy even higher. Bravo. "How Blue Can You Get?" Cook County Jail is even better for a build-up. Wow. Maybe the best blues solo ever.

We need to just send a rocket with a projector and sound system playing this for 1,000,000 years into the solar system. Let some vastly distant species see what we were at our best!
