About BAKING YESTERYEAR
A decade-by-decade cookbook that highlights the best (and a few of the worst) baking recipes from the 20th century
Friends of baking, are you sick and tired of making the same recipes again and again? Then look no further than this baking blast from the past, as B. Dylan Hollis highlights the most unique tasty treats of yesteryear.
Travel back in time on a delicious decade-by-decade jaunt as Dylan shows you how to bake vintage forgotten greats. With a big pinch of fun and a full cup of humor, you’ll be baking everything from Chocolate Potato Cake from the 1910s to Avocado Pie from the 1960s.
Dylan has baked hundreds of recipes from countless antique cookbooks and selected only the best for this bakebook, sharing the shining stars from each decade. And because some of the recipes Dylan shares on his wildly popular social media channels are spectacular failures, he’s thrown in a few of the most disastrously strange recipes for you to try if you dare.
A few of Dylan’s favorites that are going to have you licking your lips and begging for more include:
● 1900s Cornflake Macaroons
● 1910s ANZAC Biscuits
● 1930s Peanut Butter Bread
● 1940s Chocolate Sauerkraut Cake
● 1950s Tomato Soup Cake
● 1970s Potato Chip Cookies
Baking Yesteryear contains 101 expertly curated recipes that will take you on a delicious journey through the past. With a larger-than-life personality and comedic puns galore, baking with Dylan never gets old. We’ll leave that to the recipes.

I think this is a choice. It makes sense that his video for Penguin Random House would aim for more broad appeal. People who know and love B. Dylan Hollis the frantic, hilarious baker, don't need to be sold. People who are just learning about B. Dylan Hollis the baker and author might be intimidated by his usual energetic style. Also, just from the standpoint of this being for Penguin Random House, differentiating his brand from there's makes sense.

My maternal grandmother made both kinds of these pies. When Mom and Dad married, Mom made one of the cracker pies for Dad without telling him (we were poor). Dad got angry, refusing to believe her. Then he had Mom make one for a paternal family get-together without telling his sisters who had grown up during the Depression. My aunts also refused to believe it was a cracker pie, while my paternal grandmother just laughed and told them they had been eating cracker pies for years.

But then, it is impossible to top the perfection of his full personality in his own charming kitchen. Did anyone else notice the lack of lemon juice in the second pie? He mentions it, but did not add it in the video. I also love how he measured the cream of tartar, not leveling off the measuring spoon, it's how I measure things.😆 I got the cookbook today and I am delighted with it. Oh my heart, he dedicated it to his grandma! He has commentary on each recipe that makes it a fun read. My daughter is allergic to apples, so I will definitely be making this pie. Mr. B. Dylan Hollis is the most refreshing thing online in a long time. He really has two different personalities inside him; one personality for his shorts and one for his longer videos and both are people I would gladly spend an unusual amount of time with in the kitchen. In this video, however, he’s neither of those refreshing and delightful personalities that I’ve come to adore but as others have mentioned, if he gets more comfortable in the set, he should be able bring out a third person that I would call my friend. Also, if you haven’t bought his cookbook yet, why not?? I bought on July 26 but I received a damaged spine so I gave it to my brother and I promptly bought another one for myself!!

I am really enjoying the recipes in your new cookbook! My daughter made this pie for her Social's class a few years ago. They were studying the depression. The students didn't believe there were no apples in it. Which makes one wonder who would even think up such a recipe. Dylan, I do hope now that your cookbook is such a huge success you will start experimenting with old main course recipes. You are truly a gem!!!

After preordering Baking Yesteryear, it arrived yesterday and I can't wait to try the recipes in it! The instructions for each recipe are easy to follow, the pictures are fabulous, and the nice, thick, quality pages are made to stand up to decades of use. The foil on the cover is beautiful. It is well made, well researched, and B. Dylan Hollis' commentary is as humorous in print as in his videos. This cookbook is one of the best book purchases I have made all year. Love it! ❤😊

This video needs slightly bouncier quicker editing and/or some soft background music (and not just because I'm used to his other content). The quietness just felt a little odd. But he did an amazing job carrying it and keeping it interesting and un-forced regardless 😊

I might have thrown a few extra yolks in the first pie and baked a bit longer. Would have set it a bit better. A little cinnamon or cinnamon applesauce would have been a great add in too.

I pre-ordered your book, got it the 26th. I love this book because before you announced it, I was making a list of recipes you made to get instructions. You saved me many a headache and such a wonderful delivery system. Thank you

Bought the book. Gave 2 more to friends. Yes I am in. My favorite so far is the potato chocolate cake. Made it 3x. Switched to pecans for the last one and equally fabulous. The whipped cream cake was easy and delicious. More like a pound cake than angel food but no matter. It had WHIPPED CREAM. What not to love. Off to make the next thing on the list. I have years of gems from my mother. No instructions of course but as you are learning as long as you have patience you will be fine. Keep the fun coming. Oh and love the car. I have my own 1964 gem named Edna.

I know very little about cooking and less about baking, but I feel like corn starch in the Rock Arbor instead of flour might have given a less runny texture.

Love your videos! So I’ll share some of my old lady advice that I got from my grandmother a very long time ago. The difference between the dry measuring cup and the liquid measuring cup is … the dry cup is meant for you to be able to take something flat, like the back of a butter knife, and level off the ingredients … the liquid measuring cup is meant so that you can “eye up” the level of the liquid without worrying about spilling it. lol The flour in the Apple sauce is to help it be less watery.

He said he would put lemon juice into the Mock Apple Pie later, but I don't think he did. I remember his shocked face when he made the pie for the first time. He couldn't believe how good it was.
