Keith looks Innova IFA-45 Exhibition Cotton Gloss paper and shows why it has been a favourite natural white [OBA Free] fine art paper for several years. especially for his Black and White 'fine art' landscape prints.
Ideal for prints wanting a degree more contrast than on a matte cotton rag art paper, but without the sharp contrast of a bright white gloss or lustre paper.
The video also covers some of the less tangible aspects of printmaking, such as the 'fee' you are after for the print/image.

Glad you enjoyed it - I try and include a bit more of the 'why' as well as ideas for 'how'

Keith, Thanks for the video review. My main glossy paper I use is the discontinued Harman Glossy Baryta which has the closest surface finish to a glossy silver print I have seen. I also sometimes use Innova IF45, but to my eyes the reformulated paper is not as warm as the previous version, which is a shame as there appear to be no warmtone glossy papers left on the market. My favourite smooth glossy paper is Innova Editions Photo Cotton Rag, which is a lovely warm paper.

Yes, I did think the original paper might be a tad warmer, but didn't have a [known] sample of the one I first tested IFA-69 (and all its related 'own brand' versions) is another I like, but it does seem to have a bit more OBA than the 45 (I'm doing quite a few paper tests at the moment) The cotton rag you mention [IFA-11] is one I've used for many years for B&W prints. IIRC, it's the paper for the B&W print behind the P5000 in my office

Thanks for the review. Paper is always a hard choice, I think. I've had trouble getting the paper sizes that I like to use, so I've settled on Red River Paper (they even have the odd 13x38 paper size).

Thanks - I've now got a collection of RR paper to look at. One for my US viewers at last ;-)

This maybe late, I order some rr paper for 17x25 size. rr is an excellent source for information.

Good video. I appreciate you sharing your experiences. I agree with your observations. FYI, I have settled exclusively on Canson BFK Rives, and Canson Baryta Photographique II on a Canon Pro-1000 printer. Most of my BW prints go on BFK Rives; however, certain types of BW images lend themselves to the Canson Baryta paper.

Thanks - it's about knowing what a paper contributes to your ideas for a print which I always think is important. This one is also partly aimed at people who are continually buying sample packs with no clear idea what they want ;-)

The Canson Arches series is exceptional, fully agree. The Canson Baryta Photographique II is identical to the Innova IFA-69. Compare prices…😊

Thank you Keith. Question: Will you make a video on how a custom profile is prepared? Is it worthy for an amateur to create own profiles or use ready made ones? We want to know more on this topic. Again, thank you for your videos.

Hello Keith, once again thank you for sharing your experiences and opinions.I live in Switzerland, I use an Epson SC P7500, and I use mainly Hahnemuhle and Tecco papers.Actually I use the Photo rag from Hahnemuhle, do you have an idea what paper compare to the Innova, because here Innova is difficult to find? Another question are you happy with the use of the MacStudio? Thanks for your answers Daniel

Thanks - just have a look at the broad specs and you'll see 'similar papers' At this level it's hard to find a 'bad' paper from the bigger suppliers. The studio is still not my main machine [for assorted non-technical family reasons] What I have done on it works very well...

Excellent review Keith I am currently testing this paper out on my Epson 7560 here in the USA.. When building your profile what paper type did you select? I realize you did yours on the P5000 not sure that would translate over to my 7560 Thanks
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
Thanks - I used the Baryta setting on the P5000. It didn't need a custom media setting. On a P7500 I'd likely create a custom media for it with the right thickness and paper settings. The custom media functionality on the P5000 is an 'early' version of the feature - it's more usable on the P7500. The standard setting suggested is premium lustre, but I've found the baryta works well with the heftier papers. The linearity of the ABW mode suggests that Baryta was a good choice ;-)

I just checked and you can get Innova in the US. Thanks in advance for, well everything you do, but in particular covering US papers (in addition to Red River, Moab's worthy of consideration). Would you consider baryta for the Ipswich (or oak tree) image and if so, any particular one?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
Pinnacle Silk Baryta 310 is similar to the Big Bend and I've used it for years. The other brighter paper would be Innova IFA-49, which I've got a look at in due course (it's similar to Epson TPP)

Thanks, Keith. In contrast to many others you prefer the IFA-45 over the IFA-69. I have only used the IFA-69 up to now: Is the IFA-45 more glossy or will it deliver better tonality/blacks? Paper brightness?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
It depends on the image - I do like the IFA-69 as well See here for my IFA-69 review and links to original IFA-45 review - remember most of my articles/reviews long pre-date these videos ;-) www.northlight-images.co.uk/innova-fibaprint-baryta-ifa69-paper-review/ I've used the IFA-69 for some printing for others where I wanted a smoother less 'obvious' paper. The IFA-69 would perhaps more often be a choice for colour prints As to tonality/blacks - slightly different - 'better' is rarely a term I'd use ;-)

Hi Keith, thanks for all your videos on the pro 300. I did buy one but am having problems and was wondering with your considerable knowledge if you can see where I'm going wrong. I am using the Canon layout interface and printing on A3+ Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl. I have the ICC from Ilford for the paper and can select it ok from Photoshop, I get no option on the paper tray choice just the manual tray, but the printer screen displays the top tray all the time. When instructed to print the paper gets drawn through the printer without any printing and I get a message saying the paper is jammed. this is the first sheet of paper that has gone into the printer. The paper choice on the printer is set to Light photo paper as I don't get the choice of heavy paper for the top tray and I can't seem to get the manual tray to show in the display. Sorry for the drawn out explanation but it has become a little frustrating. thanks for any help you can give.

What media setting is the profile made for - you can't just change it afterwards (you shouldn't, but sometimes can) I would expect it to use ProLuster for the media setting, which feeds through the top. I can't remember what paper that Ilford branded paper actually is, but my profiling choice would likely be pro luster

Im planning on opening an art store where i sell my prints(photos mostly, but also digital drawings) and paintings of others(actual paintings and prints of them). I see that canon pro-300 is pretty obvious choice, but im trying to spec me 3 different kinda of papers. I want something super glossy for deep blacks and bright colors, something super matte, and then something in between. Im leaning towards canon platinum paper, hahnemule hemp paper(this looks very nice and fits the "street art" brand) and i cannot decide which paper in between. Which 3 papers would you recommend to get started with?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
My own choice would be a baryta style for where you want the higher contrast of a gloss without the overly shiny finish. No idea about brands though

One wonders how they may come to understand the nature of many papers without a lot of expense? Or printers for that matter.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
Canon and Epson have been lending me printers to review for over a decade - that helps ;-) I regularly suggest just starting with a few basics, since without real experience of what papers look like, how can you really evaluate them...

You don't need the best paper, you just need paper that makes you happy. If there were a universal best, it would be hard to find anything else.
