I feel you. Although I am a Malay, I do feel proud of the Peranakan community on the integration of the Malay culture into the Peranakan community, hence it is very easy for the two to communicate and agree with each other. Similarly, due to modernization, the Malay culture, too, suffer a bad erosion. We both need to ensure our traditions continue for the generations to come. For me I love to cook, so I am picking up all the Malay / Peranakan cuisine, including making talams. I am lucky to stay with my grandmother who teaches me all the important techniques in cooking Malay / Peranakan dishes. My mom is good at making kuih talam, so I pick up the skills and techniques from her.

Baba nyonya wajar diberikan status pribumi. Sumbgn budaya mereka besar sejak zaman kerajaan melayu lg. Proud to have baba n nyonya! Kekalkn tradisi anda!
I still remember when I’m interview with my chief..that time was 2018. saw 1 Chinese guy talk to my chief..his malay dialect very-very fasih..i say to my chief..”wow dasyat betul cina ni cakap melayu” And my chief say “tu baba la bodoh! Bukan cina!” And I remember in malacca still got baba, serani and chetti..

Younger generation of Peranakan Baba Nyonya Sarawak tapi berbahasa Melayu pulak. Gila2 akan masakkan Nyonya pedas2. Suka jugak akan Kebaya Nyonya! Kekalkanlah budaya!
I am so proud to be one of the generation that still practice our Peranakan culture and never forget our day to day conversation in our unique peranakan language
My grandmother was a Sarawak Nonya. She spoke Baba Malay, ate with her fingers, wore her hair in a bun, sarongs and kebayas with gold and filigree belts, kerosang and made her own kasut manek for her wedding. She was an excellent cook. She also had extended family in Indonesia.
I m a baba nyonya generation married to a Malay,I m proud to be a nyonya esp a Melaka nyonya.I really hope they.retain the baba nyonya culture, the baba nyonya language, nyonya traditional kuih n lauk2 nyonya. I remember my mum cooked the best pontey n it was our family's favourite when we were young n I also remember very well n admired the way my grandmother used to dressed up in her kebaya panjang, so resplendent with her hair done in a sanggul,n also never without her 'mimpo'.Long live d baba nyonya

One of the ages who actually practice the Peranakan culture and always remember our daily discussion in our extraordinary Peranakan language I feel so happy being a Baba Nyonya Era, I can actually speak very well in my Peranakan language..
My grandmother died when I was around 6 years old. I remember she wore the kebaya, sarong, some of the simple jewelry, so did her sister. I don't remember we had much Nyoya food growing up because we were poor. It must be a trendy thing to wear the kebaya during that period? I hope they will preserve all the heritage for future generation to understand this special inter racial culture. I visited the Baba Nyoya heritage house in Penang in 2011, it was a stunning house, I will visit it again in the near future. I love the cuisine, but it was hard to keep my diet.
I have noticed that my daughter do not look all Chinese in her photos since her primary school. When we came to know about 2 years ago that my husband's maternal grandmother was Peranakan from Indonesia settled in Penang, I now know why my daughter look the way she does.
Saya dari indonesia... Dr sudut pandang saya busana tradisional tidak kalah dr busana modern... Saya respect dan hormat... Ragam kekayaan budaya... Hargailah tanah yg kalian injak... Perbedaan asal usul disatukan di tanah yg kalian pijak... Ini mahal... Unik... Keren... Busana yang Nyaman pula dengan kondisi alam tropis.👍👍👍
I was amazed bout the culture of baba and nyonya when I was a little kid. My mom told me they are nice people and I hope I can meet baba or nyonya and learn more about their culture.
So your ancestors came with Zheng He on his ship? I'm jealous jealous jealous!!!!! 😱 What an honour it is to be descended from one of the people who sailed with Zheng He!
No they came way before that. Emperor of China marry her princess with the sultan of malacca accompanied by 2-3 thousands of Chinese noble families. The emperor didn’t want the princess feeling homesick. Their settlement was on bukit cona melaka. Bestowed by the sultan
Malaysia is very good in appreciating this Peranakan legacy, it makes me so proud being parts of this community. Too bad in my country the discrimination still the issue.

@@nese8727 thats incorrect i believe. Yes the writer most likely is an indonesian. But definitely NOT peranakan. A peranakan is one with mixed blood ... intermarriage between chinese and malay. Most indonesian chinese, i believe at least 85% are still chinese pure blooded. Still the majority. Most of all the intermarriage between a chinese and malay their culture are not well kept, because there are just too many local ethnicities among the local. And that is something to be envy about, especially if you come from the mixed blood type, as the writer above pointed out.
@@Cys62 you can check in a Dutch census by 1930, almost 2/3 Chinese living in Dutch controlled Nusantara are peranakans, note that peranakan doesn't have a to be mix blood like literally half Chinese and half native/malay, many Chinese who came during the 1800s either married native or just marry a local peranakan nyonya. Ofc local Chinese already have mix blood. Chinese women who have 娘/nio in their name is definitely a Chinese peranakan. Even if their malay blood less than half

@FEDERICA SANTACROCE after the pandemic, you should visit Melaka & Penang to research this special heritage. I have seen an advertisement about Baba Nyoya exhibition in Paris, France a few years ago, I am sure it was sponsored by the Singaporean.
I just begin to learn more about the Peranakan. My conclusion is that Peranakan is very creative, adapting to environment and cultural differences to not only survived, relevant and thrived, but also creative in coming up with the nyonya cuisine, the fashion, utensils, buildings features with peranakan tastes! Keep it up as we enter a new digital age!

What so called "Kebaya Nyonya" itu memang dibawa dari pesisir utara Jawa. Nama aslinya adalah "Kebaya Encim". Sebab dahulu aktivitas antara negeri-negeri selat (terutama Singapura) dengan Batavia sangat intens sehingga budaya peranakan Cina Indonesia pun dibawa pula ke negeri-negeri selat, termasuk Kebaya Encim yang akhirnya menjadi mode baru peranakan Cina menggantikan model baju kurung asli peranakan Cina Malaka.
Hhaha mesti nak klaim. Itu memang pakaian fusion melayu + baba/nyonya. Kebaya telahpun ada lama di Melaka. Sebelum kesultanan melayu melaka lagi. Jawa pake nya tak berbaju hanya pakai lilit badan

Peranakan = Baba Nyonya, Cheti and Kristang wajar diberi taraf bumiputera. Mereka berasimilasi dengan penduduk Tanah Melayu. Bukan terasing macam Cina Imigran.
Kau faham tak apa maksud bumiputera? Kau faham tak kalau cina bukan peranakan boleh menyamar jadi peranakan semata-mata untuk dapatkan status bumiputera? Kalau benda tu jadi, golongan peranakan yg 'authentic' pun orang dah tak boleh nak cam
When I was young, I used to frequent a Peranakan book shop buying comic books. Never I heard the baba & nyonya, owners of the shope speak chinese and according to my parent they can't since they are Peranakan not chinese.

I am a Baba. The documentary is good but the background music especially during the narration for the last part is too loud. I hope this part(background music) of the documentary can be redone.
This historical documentary made me think about the 'Rich' merchants in Golden period (16 or 17 century) of Holland and Portagugee, Spain fancy items, and culture. Is there some similarity somehow! More research and comparison are needed! Interesting!
Baba-Nyonya only for descendent of 1st wave of migrant from China from 16th century that married local woman. They are Baba-Nyonya. Descendent 2nd wave migrants from China in 18th century married local are not considered Baba-Nyonya. However, some descendent from 2nd wave had assimilate into either Malay, Chinese or Baba-Nyonya. They are Peranakan, at the time used by Malay in Penang to differentiate themselves from half-breed. In modern Malaysia 21st century, mixed race children follow the race of their father.
@@sama4112 Normal Chinese people usually are not brown skin, however they might inherited brown skin genetics from Thai, Malay, Indian or Arab that already established before the Chinese come here.
@@sama4112 Peranakan is a culture with a history, but a person does not have to be exactly this mix or exactly that mix. Someone might have mostly Malay ancestry, or mostly Chinese ancestry, but still be Peranakan. A particular person could even be not mixed at all, in recent memory (of course, everyone is mixed somehow if you go back far enough), and still be culturally Peranakan. Some are darker, some are lighter. But, most are Chinese/Malay, Chinese/Thai, etc. Also, there are Indian Peranakans, who are descended from Indian people who migrated to the area and adopted aspects of Chinese and Malay culture while retaining Hindu heritage.
For the Indians(southern Tamil Nadu) would sailed directly to Malacca by the Straits Settlements but for the Hokkiens of Southern China would had to sail past Tumasik(Singapore) to reach Malacca by the North East Monsoon.
I have question, do chinese in Kelantan classify as baba nyonya or peranakan too. Because chinese in kelantan use bahasa as communication and practice malay culture too.
@Jacky Phantom i'm not..basically i agreed that peranakan also should get bumiputera right..but however today mix blood people were not considered as bumiputera or unless you are a muslim..i had a friend who were arab and chinese muslim decendent and got malay right..lol
paweh samli well you are wrong, one is not necessary have to be muslim to earn bumiputera privileges, in fact, most non muslims and non malay in sabah sarawak are all bumiputeras. Regarding your friends case, you should read more about perlembagaan malaysia, it states that anyone who practice malay culture and a muslim can be considered as malay. Your friend’s parents or ancestors might claim to be malay and that’s how they can be bumiputera. About baba and nyonya, I believed they are eligible to earn bumiputera but the problem is the latest/young baba n nyonya generation prefer to call themeselves as chinese, and practice more chinese culture than malay culture side.
@@perfecttionist3507 i know..that is why i'm giving an example that my friend who were mixed arab and chinese got a malay privilages..i'm not denied that non muslim bumi were not get malay privilages..
Their kebaya is different than most of kebaya on Indonesian. Indonesian kebaya, like Jawa's and Batak's kebaya, are open right above the breast to the shoulder. So, even from back side, we can see the lower neck and upper back.
