Baba Yetu by Christopher Tin
Combined Choirs, Soloist: Joe Huang, Percussionist: Elsie Shaw
“Baba Yetu” is the Swahili-language setting of “The Lord’s Prayer,” which was passed down through oral tradition and written word and has long been a defining facet of the Christian faith. In the mid-2000’s, Stanford University alum Soren Johnson was finishing up production on the third entry in the acclaimed video game series Civilization. He recruited his former classmate, Christopher Tin, to compose the title song for then forthcoming Civilization IV. Tin, an alum of the celebrated student a cappella group Stanford Talisman, drew upon the strong rhythmic and world music specialties of Talisman when composing “Baba Yetu”. It proved to be the perfect companion to the game which would win numerous awards in 2005. Christopher Tin has since become a notable and award-winning concert, film and video game composer. “Baba Yetu” was the first piece of video game music to be nominated for (and win) a Grammy Award.
