Babette's Feast (1987) - trailer. Subscribe: bit.ly/subscrib....
A mouthwatering Christmas treat, Babette's Feast is re-released on 14 December in a beautiful new digital transfer.
Book tickets: bit.ly/QsfTfZ
Adapted with great sensitivity and invention from Isak Dinesen's short story (itself inspired by The Tempest), this truly lovely tale of everyday passion, magic and miracles is a delicacy to savour. Relocating the story from a bourgeois Norwegian port to a remote, windswept Jutland hamlet so steeped in Lutheran spirituality it feels like something out of a Dreyer film, Axel traces the strange chain of events that led to the two elderly daughters of a famously pious pastor taking on, as their cook, a Parisienne who was until the advent of the Commune one of the city's most celebrated chefs.
At once poignant and funny, gently ironic and quietly compassionate, the story -- beautifully performed by all concerned (some faces are familiar from Dreyer and Bergman), but most especially by Audran, clearly relishing her role as a gastronomic wizard -- casts its spell carefully yet confidently, culminating in the titular banquet: improbable, mouthwatering, supremely regenerative.

“The only things you take into the next life are those you give away.” That line….

@@angelabisceglia6079 you can interpret it a lot of ways, but I have always liked the saint francis prayer which says "it is in giving that we receive", i.e. if we give something away as an act of generosity there's a spiritual reward for that (and not just in the next life 🙂 )

What a wonderful movie made all the better by a luminous Stephane Audran as Babette. Ms. Audran died today at age 85. "Oh how you will enchant the angels".

A masterpiece that delivers the audiences to soaring heights of human aspirations. A work of art that opened the internal vaults of simplicity, elegance, decency to inspiring personal applications. An everyday ideal. There are miracles in the ordinary, there is beauty in the mundane.

I wonder how many Australian children would have viewed the movie?... Only a few.....perhaps if they undertook a hospitality or home economics and cookery course at high school.

A film of great love, humour and depth. My mother's all-time favourite film. Is it not wonderful, where the spiritual and sensual meet and both benefit from that meeting?

OVERLOOKED is that Babette would have had to purchase all the glassware, cutlery, dinnerware and serving dishes and platters for the feast also. Close inspection shows the drinkware is matching and the plates for different courses are matching also. The "poor" religious folk of the town did not have these items and were tee-total, initially eating an ale and bread broth from small earthenware tagines. One of the best films of ALL TIME. WATCH IT OVER AND OVER. The dinner setting fascinates me as much as the cuisine. Cheers from sports-obsessed Australie.

food is very close to sensuality in giving back same gratification and extreme satisfaction just like sex does... that very essence of food is to ignite your pleasure links in your brain and nourish the ripe volutptousness of your senses through hormones which then drives your sexuality... thus making the circle complete.. a well noruished body has in built sensuality already ready for that starting from youth...
