Babies Are Born With Special Survival Skills: Primitive Reflexes

Babies come hardcoded with a constantly updating operating system that has some special features called PRIMITIVE REFLEXES.
These are not mere bonus easter eggs but a key part of gameplay although they are patched after a few months and can no longer be accessed. They exist to help the otherwise very stupid baby find milk and stay close to its mama.
Primitive reflexes form part of every baby examination, first to make sure they are present, and then to make sure they have gone by the right age.
We share many of these in-built reflexes with most mammals so they're also a fascinating and fairly cute window into evolution.
NB - I'm not a paediatrician so please don't take everything I say as gospel. I mean, you shouldn't really listen to me at the best of times. About anything. Even cardiology.
If you have any medical queries, please don't direct them at me as it's very possible I got my medical degree in the post from the Club Medschool, please consult a real life doctor.

The grasping reflex also works with the baby's feet, although it's totally useless since they are now, well, feet. They just kind of curl their toes in response. My mother is a midwife, and one time the father of a newborn asked her why the newborn curled its feet like that, as they were testing the reflex. My mother explained that it is a vestigial reflex from a time when our monkey feet hadn't evolved into human feet yet, and its purpose was to help the infant grasp its mother's fur. The father, being a religious, creationist type, of course didn't accept this explanation.
@MedlifeCrisis
@MedlifeCrisis 5 лет назад
Yes that is correct, it's the same reflex - grasp - sometimes referred to as palmar. In young babies with very flexible feet due to minimal bone ossification, you can put a finger in the flat of their sole and they'll curl around it.

When my optician asked me to cross my knees and then struck my knee, I thought it was strange. Then he explained that in 40 years practice he had never come across Adie's system before. Or I might be dead. A couple of years later, I visited the Bradford Museum of Photography. In one exhibit there was a heat sensitive plate connected to a display panel. When one of my family put a hand on the plate, the display showed a multicoloured hand, very red around the rheumatic knuckles. The other children found their displays equally fascinating. When I put my hand on the panel, the display showed a random-ish light display - no structure at all. I asked the attendant why this should be. He confirmed the panel was working properly. "I think it means you may be dead", he said

take a moment to appreciate the survival skills you have. That you struggle and survive is living proof of that. What you want is not survival but happiness. And that is the moment where it's best to go deeper into yourself because life is struggle. Sooner or later everyone gets confronted with that and the only way to resolve this problem is by finding the resolve in yourself (or at least some higher ideal to pursue that makes it worth.)

Have you ever wondered: where are the primitive reflexes hardwired? I mean, why does the neural system respond in that way to those stimuli? As far as I know, genes just synthesize proteins, they don't generate behaviors or thoughts. Then, how are these response patterns transmitted and inherited?
@Gaaraape
@Gaaraape 5 лет назад
That's not how it works. Genes do much more than synthesize proteins. In a broader sense your genes regulate cell behaviour. The mechanism behind reflexes is easy to explain.
@Faustobellissimo
@Faustobellissimo 5 лет назад
@@Gaaraape Yes, the mechanism is easy. We may know HOW that stimulus generates that response. But do we know WHY? In other word, how does the nervous system know that it HAS to respond to that stimulus in that way? This doubt is even more strong with innate behaviors more complex than spinal reflexes, for example the fixed action patterns that we observe in animals and involve also the brain.
