rurone We don't have a N. American porcupine, but I'm sure Chili Pepper would like to hang out with him because Chili Pepper loves everyone. He's in quarantine for a few months so it'll be awhile before he gets to meet any of the other animals. Until then, he'll get lots of attention from the humans :)

rurone If you are referring to Kizmit she is from Africa, Idk if they will get along, but I hope they do :) I doubt they will be housed together though, I suspect that beavers need big water bowls inside their enclosures

His name is Huckleberry, he’s named after Huckleberry Finn and Huckleberry Hound. But, he’s all grownup and he used to be little, but now he knows how to chop down trees with his teeth to cut and timber some trees to make a beaver dam to protect it from predators such as a wolf and a grizzly bear to attack it. I wished I could take care of a baby beaver and once I take care of it and help him grow, then I’ll let him go out to a wildlife to make a beaver dam of his own.

I think timbit would be a cool name! Timbits are what donut holes are called at Tim Hortons (a popular canadian coffee shop) and since the beaver is the national animal of Canada it would be fitting for this little cutie! :)

Our local wildlife rehabilitation center just got one three weeks ago. He's adorable too and you described him perfectly. Their beaver threw a tantrum quite often which was adorable. The sweet smell is probably castoreum. It is used in perfumes and foods. I nominate the name Benny as a name for some unknown reason. I can't wait to get updates. Thanks!

He is so adorable! Why does the neurological damage prevent him from being taken care by his mother? Is it because he doesn´t recognize the mother, or does not know how to act? Or does the mother act differently towards him? Or is it just because he needs special treatment due to his condition? The best of luck to him and you with this challenge! :)

Gah, he's so adorable! Do you think he might be a good fit for Frasier's old enclosure, or will he need more horizontal space than it could provide? Also, I'd love to hear more about how he came to Animal Wonders! I know you said he had neurological damage, but does that mean he came from the wild or from a captive situation (like a zoo) that couldn't take care of his special needs? And will that damage be healed over time, or will he always have special needs?

First of all adorable. If I was going to give him a name it would be timber. Now for a question and it's kind of gross beavers eat wood or at least the bark that's some pretty tough fiber does that need some kind of special bacteria in his gut to break it down? He's being raised by humans not that that's a bad thing I was raised by humans to. Is the vet going to give him some kind of probiotic to help him digest his food?

From what I know they chew on wood to make sure their teeth don't grow too long and for building materials, not for nutrition

Grubby aye aye Beavers have gut bacteria that break down (ferment) the wood for them indeed. They however get these bacteria naturally from just eating leaves and the trees themselves. So a diet of pellets, fresh produce and selected wood should be sufficient. And it is technically not the bark they get most of the nutrition from but the layer that is right underneath it, the sweet cambrium. Which transports all the sap of the tree. Not a bad survival snack for humans too! if boiled or baked beforhand, does not taste all that bad and I speak from experience. ;)

Neurological damage can mean basically anything, since brains control everything. It might be something quite mild or serious, but this beaver pup seems to be responsive and active enough, that the neurological damage isn't probably from the worst end of the spectrum.
