Baby Bird Dog - First GoPro Flight - Rotax 277/J3 Kitten 

Mine makes weight. You are correct, with the 277 the performance is not great. On really hot days, I have had that weird "hair standing up on the back of your neck" feeling when takeoff seems to take forever. Nudging back on the stick makes you go slower and climb less. Relaxing the stick lets you go faster and you start to climb. Feels like the service ceiling is right near sea level. Maybe I need to buy a better prop. I still have trouble making enough power.

Yes. Kits were made by Hipps until about 10 years ago.

@@willsmith4950 do they still make those J3 Kitten's as a kit or possibly and hopefully completely finished aircraft?

I have not sorted out all the instruments yet. CHT / EGT remains a problem, so I am doing only short flights at this time. It's generally in the mid 60s when I fly, and I weigh 210 with the leather jacket and handheld. By watching the videos and using Google Earth to measure, it looks like wheels up in around 400 feet from a rolling start. No VSI yet, but I would guess 300fpm at cruise climb. I have been thinking about getting CloudAhoy once everything is working right so I can extract data more easily. Worked well for me in the past. Level cruise is about 65mph. I am pleased with the performance and expect better fuel economy and range - longer flights than with one of the larger and heavier engines. Curedcomposites has some good data on his HiMax pages.
