The thing is, a lot of these policies and mindsets are results of decisions and actions boomers made. My boomer parents very proudly and smugly told me not to expect or plan for inheritance; because they intended on spending everything before they died. They are also well aware of how lucky they were for being born when they were; how housing is impossible for our generations, let alone rent and cost of living; it's not 'their problem'. Cool. They shouldn't be surprised then when they are dumped in the cheapest, nastiest retirement home to rot and I don't bother to visit - why would I? "it's not my problem"

So, I’ve worked in prisons for the military (ours aren’t even close to as bad as civilian prisons) and I can say that the issue with prisons is the staff. That and the ignorant lifelong criminals that want to perpetuate crime even in confinement. Correctional Officers (COs) have one of the toughest jobs in the world, especially in civilian prisons. And prisons probably have one of the hardest times of any career trying to find new employees. Guards work long hours (8-12+ hours) a day in super stressful environments. They are responsible for enforcing rules nobody wants to follow, stopping contraband everyone wants to keep, ensuring inmates survive their shift, and making sure they go home at the end of the day. They have such a high turnover rate that many senior guards lose motivation in training the newbies because why put all this effort into training some who will quit in the next two months. New guards lack the presence, communication skills, and knowledge to be successful. They also have less rapport with the inmates and don’t know what to be on the watch for meaning any time a new guard steps on the block it’s open season for the inmates. Guards lacking good communication skills are also at a higher risk of pissing off the wrong guy and getting attacked. Civilian prisons are so much worse than military because their guard force is so much more undisciplined. Sure their senior officers have way more experience than most military guards. But because we’re the military we have a much better control of our guards. We always said that the biggest security threat to a prison is the staff. Have you ever thought about how inmates that have been locked up for years get their hands on phones, narcotics, and weapons? It’s the staff that bring it in. The military is so absurdly strict on their guard force that most guards wouldn’t even toy with the idea of bringing stuff in for an inmate to make a quick buck because they know that they will 100% be caught at some point and probably end up in prison themselves. Civilian COs don’t have that luxury. Their coworkers are just that, a revolving door of new guys and many of them would like to make a quick grand brining in a $30 pre paid phone or $40 of weed. And if a CO does last they have some of the worst health in the country. They suffer from things like PTSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, heart problems, and diabetes at rates way higher than any other profession. They constantly have to change their sleep schedules, they’re on high alert most of the time they’re awake, and they get to be the first witnesses in what criminals do to other criminals. Also their world view is slanted just like police but arguably worse. They spend dozens of hours a week locked in a room with grapists, PDFs, murderers, and any other vile human you can think of. They also see people they know are innocent or helpless in the prison system and there’s nothing they can do about it. Cops deal with that criminal one time, then the COs deal with them for years. Prison reform starts at correctional officer reform. A better, safer, educated, more motivated guard force is what we need. Not new dumb laws that eliminate prison times for tons of crimes. If prisons could start by eliminating contraband I’d say at least 50% of their problems would be solved.

The death of the extended family. As developed countries shifted from agriculturally based economies to industry and then services related economies, the population growth shifted to cities and away from smaller local communities where extended families lived as one family unit. Ma and Pa now had to provide their own living arrangements (home or apartment). No more two or three generations living together in a large farmhouse. The city slicker kids didn't want Ma and Pa around anymore. In most developed countries, housing costs have risen faster than incomes. This affects the retired and elderly more the working population. If your retirement income is only SSI, you will find it almost impossible to live the lifestyle you had when you were working.

I am a Japanese living in the countryside of southern Japan, and I can really feel that Japanese society is aging. The most common age group among Japanese people is probably in their 60s to 70s. The average age of Japanese is over 50 years old. However, I am not pessimistic. It may be economically painful, but I think it is a good thing for remodeling the social structure that the analog generation that produced many children is getting older and they are being weeded out. We will continue to have hard times as we are now for at least another 20 years, but I still see it as a necessary time.
@Ayzev
@Ayzev 14 дней назад
The generation that produced many children being replaced by a generation that produces fewer children is the exact opposite of what you want. An aging population is caused precisely by a lack of births. You have few young people working to sustain many old people; this overworking results in low birthrates; eventually these workers, who couldn't reproduce and are thus succeeded by an even smaller generation, become the big old population that need to be sustained by the next young overworkers; and it just keeps going. This is a loop. It won't stop until it is broken. And it can be. Work needs to be made more time-efficient - for example, the 4-day work week needs to take place of the 5-day work week, as it's long since proven to be equally productive, and working more than the current standard 40 hours a week has even shown to lower productivity. There need to be places that people can go without having to worry about strict rules and entrance fees and whatnot and just run into each other, meet new faces naturally, have something to do together. Things that are designed to be addictive and that keep people in-doors, such as social media and a great many video games, need to be regulated. There's numerous things that can be done that would not only fix the aging population, but also make people healthier and happier in general, and I have to insist that just waiting things out is not one of them.

*Sigh, another person who doesn't understand what life expectancy means... It doesn't mean that people get older, it mostly means that less people die young anymore. Even in Ancient Rome the life expectancy might have been 20-30 but once you managed to survive to age 20 you are very likely to reach age 50-60. In UK in the 18th century the chance of your kid dying until the age of 5 was nearly 75%, they managed to decrease it to around 30% in the 19th century which boosted their life expectancy from 25 years to over 40 years. Basically life expectancy takes into account the amount of people who died through illness, crime or even accidents, that's why it is so high in japan. The country takes health very serious (like mandatory health checks every single year), the crime rate is very low and they also have tons of safety measures to decrease accidents. On contrary the life expectancy in USA is somewhat low compared to other first world countries because their crime rate is high, their health care sucks and they don't care so much about safety.

It's sad but that's the reality because they don't have any relatives to care for them when they go out to society, so they're better off staying in prison because at least the guards check on them and take care of them. We visit atleast once a month, twice usually for family lunch or go to a lunch /dinner. We also chip in with finances so that they dont have money issues, which I think is normal. I don’t really understand why aren’t more countries having “colony-settlements” like Russia. It’s basically a town full of people convicted of crimes of carelessness, light or mid seriousness of offence crimes. They’re allowed to use cash, to live with their families inside or even outside of colonies in some cases, they in majority work as the regular people with the two differences being: they must not break rules (curfew, laws and freedom of travel) and they must check in with their (sorta) parole officers. It’s clearly easier transition than standard russian prisons (Google how the cells look, lol). It’s probably the best way to reintroduce inmates back to society, or rather not to alienate them in the first place.

Having kids is retirement, or at least was traditionally. Well-raised kids are worth a 1000 times what you put into them, they may not be a good investment in the short term, but in the long term they will take care of you longer than you take care of them. Unfortunately, both the west and japan have becoming extremely Materialistic and Hedonistic, meaning that they only chase pleasure in the moment without thinking for the future.

@@BlaineCraner over urbanization followed countries, spanning every civilization have seen profound shifts created when urbanized periods happen the Islamic golden age with a secular religiously, diverse. That led to low birth rates amongst the scholar and academic class over a prolonged period of time making rural culture, the dominant culture of the late Abbasid caliphate. The Roman Empire declined in a very similar manner to the American Empire, a highly urbanized society with low rates and high inequality that disenfranchised all ethnic Latins to the point where they doing things I cannot state in a comment section then the migration period started and in its most profound area Britain there was no longer a predominantly Celtic culture. All traces of Latin society were removed outside of architecture in a Drelich State. Gaul got renamed to France named after the tribe that conquered it. Going to a more recent example, France lost relative power in the 1800s after becoming the first urbanized secular society in Europe after the British with some academics arguing that they hit urbanization before Britain. It led to them, moving from the second most populous ethnic group in Europe to 5th now they are not even a top 5 most populous, ethnic group. This led to a series of military defeats at the hands of the Germans in the Franco Prussian war and World War II now they’re military industrial complex is nowhere near Russia’s and they’ve lost the capability to maintain colonies. Same with Brazilian birth rates and other centralized urban Society. The highest fertility counties in Sweden are all anthropologically suburbs. You are twice as likely to have a child in an American suburb then you are in Tokyo. Will only continue the decline, and the migraines will eventually override the culture of the NATO due to inheriting a pre-urbanization pre-industrial culture that will take 60+ years to disintegrate.
