Man we still had auto shop in High School. Only class I paid attention in. Been a gear head and mechanic for over 47 years now. Made a damn good living at it too. No college for this guy.
We now live in fraidy-cat culture. People are afraid of their own shadow. Look how easy it was to get everyone to wear a stupid mask and get jabs that only made them sicker because they feared the coof more than they loved freedom. There will never be another era like the late 20th century. We were lucky to be there. @@nelms78
Why did life become so boring? Really don't see how playing with a cool app on a Wednesday night compares to sitting behind the wheel of a big block, and hanging out with real people at Bob's.
Karl Gerber after the internet came and made people think that its better to explore the world from a 4.5 inch screen inside your house instead of going out and actually living life
AIDS changed thing Alot. In fact once the year 1990 hit life started to became more about Self-Improvement versus Having Fun. The year 1980 versus the year 1990 were vastly different in terms of what it meant to "Have Fun". Huge Difference.
Everyone fails to address the elephant in the room. Why are things different now than in the 1970's? Start with a quick review of present day Chicago. How many were shot and killed this past month?
It was an amazing time! People were more real. You had to be out there or be home. No computers, no cell phones..you had to drive to go find someone or you heard that so and so was there, so you drove there. you would hit a bunch of places each night. Music blaring, girls, cars, fun...ocassionaly drag race....the real kind....drive in movies too. But mostly when u got a date and wanted privacy. Lol Today is cool too, I do like the modern conveniences, but its different. But some of us older guys and gals still know how to cruise. Lol
@paleolithictech i kinda of agree. I was born the last year of the "official" baby boom era, 64' which seems too late to be classified a boomer. I would agree and align myself with the next gen, than a boomer...
I’m 69 yrs old. In 1972 I got married, joined the military and we had two boys in 73 & 74. I got out in 77 and went to work in manufacturing, pastry chef and finally as a 911 operator. I regret nothing and just about everything in my life. If I could go back I would. Those days were so great and I just didn’t realize it then.
That red van called "Wild Cherry" was found not too long ago, I think abandoned and rotting. It was pulled out and fully restored. I remember seeing a multi-part video on finding it, getting it out of wherever it was, and the restoration process. Awesomeness. Holy crap what an incredible time to be in our teens and twenties in that period. We had no clue how free and wonderful it was, and how much it would be missed.
Used to cruise up and down the Boulevard from Bob's Big Boy to Vanowen Street in my '66 Chevelle. Gas was cheap. I was a single guy at the time. Had a blast. Then it was gone.
I was a teenager in the 70's and that was the last decade when things were simple and laid back, here in Toronto people would cruise up and down yonge street downtown.
When I get called a 'Boomer' these days, I just refer back to these days and think how much they don't know and could never appreciate. "Boomer Strong."
I remember when I was a teenager in the '60's we referred to the Geritol Crowd as "Old Farts." Now that I am one I reply, "I might be an old fart, but I'm a Smart Old Fart!" 😎
As a millennial, I can confirm that the whole “OK Boomer” thing stems entirely from jealousy. Almost all younger people, whether they want to admit it or not, thought that this time period is cooler than their own.
Ocean Blvd in Lompoc, CA, baby! Loved cruising, talking with friends, getting burgers, scoring beers!! Now, that’s dead and gone, and several gangs now dominate the night. Damn shame.
North End, Main St. to Seaside Park, Bridgeport, Ct. Late seventies, thru mid - Eighties. My crusing years, lol.. had 71 and a 74 Monte Carlo and a 69 GTO. Now i have a 70 goat convertible. Cruise to the beach on weekends and after work.
Seeing this video brings back some very beautiful memories of fine days gone by. Some Friends and I White and Mexican would cruise Van Nuys Boulevard in our low riders on mainly Saturday nights in the early 80,s along with the hot rods and motorcycles. I guess I can say it was a neutral area, because we all cruised there together and everyone got along fine. (And that is how it is suppose to be). We never had any problems at all. The LAPD Officers would just tell US to behave ourselves and show some respect. And that is what we did. Oh. And all them beautiful Ladies up and down the Boulevard could make the sun shine bright at three o,clock in the morning. It has been many years now but I may have shot the breeze with some of the People in this video.Well I sure do miss Los Angeles and Van Nuys Boulevard. And lets not forget, Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard,s. Keep on cruising and God bless us all.
Oh the 70's...the girls, the cars, vans, big blocks, cruising, no cells, smart phones or mindless electronic gadgets/crap. Just good times and fun. How I miss it all....and the 70's music.....it was more then just good...it was incredible.
I lived around the corner from VNB on Van Owen st. Every Wednesday nite I would cruise in my 1977 Black Trans Am. I had friends with the names: Budgie, Randy Fine, Ty Tilly and brother. Great people that I will probably never see again. God Bless all of you!!!
Yeah, some of those great ole buds cruising around, having fun in those times where we had "all the privledges of an adult and all the responsibilities of a child"; meaning the only responsibilities were to ourselves, thinking these guys would always be around, then recalling the last words of conversations that we had with them, not knowing it would be the last time we'd ever speak again.
TRUE STORY... I USED TO CRUISE VAN NUYS BOULEVARD ON "WEDNESDAY" NIGHTS(75'-80') IN MY 56' "STRAIGHT AXLE" CHEVY BELAIR WITH A 427 "RAT" MOTOR... DEFINITELY THE "GOOD OLD DAYS"😎
Jack in the box. Oh yes. That was just one of the fast food joints we would eat at. I love them taco,s and them jumbo jacks. And I still love jack in the box.
Ha, I worked that the Jack on San Fernando and Balboa. I lost a shit load of weight while there because I refused to eat any of it other than Fries and a Coke.
I was! Hate being mid sixties age now! Don’t ever wish you were born back then, please. I have a son your age and he had a great childhood fortunately! Be glad you’re YOUNG!
My mom and dad cruised Van Nuys when they were dating (they graduated Van Nuys High School around 1960) and I also cruised with my big brother in 1978 & 1979. The BEST!
Paradise6312 Might have more influence in your existence than you know. I cruised van nuys in "65 - "66. up to mulholland after the cruising was finished. Paid for the fun for 18 years.
A lot of clips from the movie "The Van", some from "Corvette Summer", some from a video of cruising Van Nuys Blvd. I recognize and I'm not sure what else......and the film "Van Nuys Blvd"......... very nostalgic.
If B Moore builds it...they will come! In the mid 60's I remember going to that Bob's, frequently, for a family dinner, eating in the car! I was just a kid, but oogled all of the bright and shiny cool american cars that I saw there. I was in the back of our station wagon, with my family eating, and viewing the cars, oblivious at the time that there was cruising on Van Nuys Blvd. Great time! The Cal Fame orange juice plant was right next to the Bob's. Thanks for your contribution to building such an iconic Bob's!! In 1969 my uncle, when he was one of the VP's of Seaworld, picked the site of, and named Magic Mountain in Valencia, Calif. My hat logo is my uncle's hard-hat that I now have, with the original Magic Mountain logo on it that my cousin, Lon designed! My uncle was Eugene "Doc" Lemmon.
Some girl jumped into my white Ford van about 1973 or so, she gave me a ring that was broken. It had an ivory cameo on it. She jumped out at some point. Can't remember all the details. Anyways... She said it was her grandmother's. If anyone knows that girl, tell her I still have the two pieces.
This looked so amazing, the Van Nuys drive thru and all that, I watched this in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and I can't help but feel like I missed out, I avoid Van Nuys like the plague now, it's overcrowded, gross, and homeless people everywhere. Hopefully before I die they recreate these experiences in VR like they did in black mirror.
I remember from my grand parents home hearing and seeing the Wednesday night cruise traffic. I wanted so badly to walk to the streets corner. Then my older cousin said get in kid let’s go cruise.
I started at Monroe high in 1974 and Holmes for three years before that. Been watching these Valley video's lately and it really hurts to see them, very bitter-sweet. The longing I feel for the way it was compared to the shit hole that L.A. has turned into is almost too much. The Valley was a great place to grow up, we never had to worry about going anywhere like concerts, parties, whatever. No one was shooting each other or getting beaten by a mob of maniacs for no reason, and it was a cool thing to have a real job at 16. I'm glad enough of us are still around to remember. Anyone remember a drummer named Jack Trevino or a beautiful girl named Linda Coop who both graduated from Granada in 1978? It would be nice to find some old friends here.
Keep looking, don't give up! A month ago I visited a guy that I'd known since the 5th grade, and went to Patrick Henry, and Granada with. Saw him for the first time since 1975. He had been living in Arizona for 30 years! Went to his store in Cottonwood, Arizona. He is Jeff Bek (not THE Jeff Beck--one of the all time greatest guitarists!), but he enjoys the name association! It is so surreal to see someone again from that time, sure gave me alot of joy, and an instant connection, like I had Doc Brown's time machine!!!
Monroe high, class of 74......Debra Winger was in that class, my ex went there class of 74.....she worked at magic mountain as a troll.....NOW IMA TROLL
Seeing this brings back such great memories. Was 17 in ‘79. Cruising happened here in metro Detroit on Woodward, Telegraph and Hines Drive to mention a few, how different the world was then, we were young and free, no lockdowns, no cancel anything...just lots of freedom and fun. Blessed to have the memories. 💜
Cruised mid to late sixties. Guys rolling up," want to go to a party?" Yeah we shouted through our rolled down windows, Follow us! We would follow a few blocks and then ditch them. It was part of the scene. Always rolled into Bob's Big Boy for a vanilla coke and a burger. A well spent Friday evening.
👍👍Gotta sacrifice some rubber, once in a while, but not to often, or you'll go broke. Cars I went broke on; 70 Camaro SS 4-spd. Maryland car 69 Camaro SS,auto 350/350 Lt1 Corvette motor. Firebird formula 350 (74) looked like trans am, no guts Had a " Rockford" for a minute My friends 70 TA, 455, Built, still my favorite muscle car...
A great video and a thumbs up. I am 61 and I live in Minnesota and we had a few great car cruising spots in that era also. From 1970 to 1980 we had the downtown St. Paul. loop and University Ave. Life was great back then and thanks for bringing back the memories.
Great memories of listening to this song in my 68 GTO with my Pioneer 8-track, which I still have. I would close the gas station on Friday nights, I would pump 4 gallons of Sunoco 260, and two hours later tank was empty. Ah the summer of 1978.
Howdy from a '60's late-night/early-morning gas station closer! When I was in college we would call for a pizza and clean the bays before it arrived. Lights out & we sat in front of the bay doors watching our friends cruse by on Main Street & pull in to chat for a bit. Loved those days with my '55 Chevy 2-dr Wagon waiting out front to take me home..... 😎
Had a 1973 mustang mach 1, coolest car ever, just a great cruiser, would cruise for hours, listening to eagles, journey, reo speedwagon, 38 special, Elton john, all the oldies.
Can you imagine actually paying attention to the people whom you were with and your surroundings at the time instead of constantly staring and swiping a screen of digital images pining away just trying to find that one better post or meme in cyberspace all the while ignoring those and what’s around you.
Is that how it is now? I was a teenager in the '80s, so sometimes I do wonder about what teenage life is like today. I don't have kids, so I really don't know. In my time, we were content hanging out on a backroad drinking beer and listening to music...enjoying the starlit nights and laughing ourselves silly.
I use to cruise Van Nuys in my 64’ Chevy Impala then my VW Bus. Such fun times! Remember Farells Ice Cream and Bob’s Big Boy. I graduated JH Francis Polytechnic High in 1973. Seems like yesterday. Yes I’m a Valley girl. Life was so good!
great vid im 60 and im glad i was born in 63 loved my childhood days had friends in the neighbour everyone was easy going laid back an chilled 70s 80s 90s were the best yrs for me loved em cherish and look back with fondness these kids today dont know what happiness is sad but just show them this vid keep up the good work 😊☺💐🌹🥀
Wow. A true blast from the past. I'd wash my car 3 times a week to take it to Van Nuys Blvd every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night. To hell with dating! Was in one car club and the mascot for another car club.
I didn't live in California but where I lived we had a street called riverside drive and we cruise that, and hung out in the k mart parking lot and the sunoco station back then man life was great
Reminds me of cruisin' in Sacramento, CA in the mid to late 80's. Every Friday and Saturday night during the summer. Such awesome times. Had a '71 Dodge Dart Swinger back in the day. Such awesome times with my friends. Killer memories. Their will never be times like that again. There were some wicked street machines out and about. After the cruise we would hit the midnight movies and watch Heavy Metal or The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Get home like at three in the morning. Damn I'd give anything to go back to those days and nights!
The cruise scene in my hometown of Odessa Texas in the 70s and 80s looked so much like this. We had a blast in our cars, doing things that are not PC today. When I get together with old friends, we talk about it like it was this past weekend, not 40 years ago. We didn't know it then, but it really was the best time of our lives.
Was raised on Sylmar st., one block off Van Nuys Blvd. Spent most of my youth on the best cruise in the world. I feel sorry for the loss and that the kids don't have that great fun available.
@@freakindawgen yes I saw the van at a drive in here in il. I talked to him lthen I heard he tore it apart and had to give it back to the owners in Cali and he got thrown in. Jail for it
I have lived in SFV from 1957 til we moved to Thousand Oaks, all the places I lived in the valley (Reseda Canoga Park, Van Nuys ) are all like the ghetto, so sad. I now live on the Southern Oregon Coast. 22,000 people in the entire county. The most scenic coastline and the wild rivers. Have to drive 150 miles for any major stores. The closest Walmart is in California 65 miles. Usually go to Coos Bay Or. 75 miles but now sales tax in Or. Not only is California becoming a place only the wealthy can afford to live or be on public assistance.
I remember Van Nuys Blvd like it was yesterday - Wednesday & Friday nights were the unofficial times to hit the streets. Muscle Cars, Sports Cars, Vans, Hot Rods, and people walking on the side walks. Always packed
Nice until the cops shut it down. If you passed by the same spot within a certain amount of time they would consider it cruising and give you a freaking ticket. Today there are events, but planned. That's ok too, but nothing like just coming out and doing what we did back in the day. We were out there just about every night, sometimes the last few to go home.
I was there! I worked at Bob’s Big Boy Number 7 5535 Van Nuys Blvd. Cruising Van Nuys Blvd in my Surfer 🏄 Van Van Club The Vandits! 1976/1978 Closing it Down Sad 😞
I was there...1971 Nova, 402 rat motor, Th400, 9" Ford reverend with 4.56 gears. Awesome is TOO mild of a word. You had to be there to understand. Thanks for the video
I was 19 years old in 79, Grew up in NOR CAL, Those were some very good times and I miss them. Maybe I just miss my youth, seems like life these days are filled with pain.
You have the absolute coolest videos on RU-vid. I think that those of us who were lucky enough to be teens during the late 60’s to 70’s were very blessed. Thanks for the music and the memories!
Back in the day most every high school had a store or strip center parking lot you'd park and hang out in on Friday and Saturday night, you'd walk/cruise around and talk to your buddies and a few girls. Is it wrong to think hanging out in a parking lot were some of the best times of my life?
When the Valley had a GM plant on Van Nuys Boulevard, Annheuser-Busch had the gardens on Roscoe, there was a drive-in theater near Roscoe and Sepulveda.
"Where's your El Camino!" Newbomb Turk!!! The Beverly Hills Asshole Society! Tubby's Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia! The Newbomb Turk Memorial Library...you must have heard of it? Great movie...one of the best..Loved the cars, especially the Goat!
@@Johnnycdrums That's not from Hollywood Nights, that's from the 1st Porky's movie...A great line nether the less!!! The "I had this taste in my mouth before" line is from Hollywood Nights....The punchbowl scene at the club...hahahahahah Mrs. Friedman said it.... "Jimmy Shine is going off to Vietnam tomorrow and your worried if the surf's bitchin??" lol "How about some "burger"?" lololol
Flashback from long ago. I was working at that Jack in the box in late 76, early 77. Was living just south of Nordoff from 88 to 93, after being homeless for 6 1/2 months. Sure could not afford it these days..
We showed respect back then, if there was a fight it was as fist fight not a gun fight. Mostly just to show our cars and our chick. Music was the best too! No gangsta rap crap! Low riders loved the oldies, 50s music. Mucle cars loved the who, zepplin, vanhalen etc. Good times babyyy!!
