I grew up in the country and was taught possums could carry rabies. They actually rarely ever carry rabies and like you said, they eat an unbelievable amount of ticks in a season, like 5,000! Possums here in the US look quite a bit different than in Australia. They are still cute though! And possums here are more omnivorous than the Australian possums.

Possums of Australia are adorable. Opossums of the US are terrifying giant rats.

In 'new Zealand where I've been living a few months ago, there was a ma'n (G .Churcher) who was paid by his gouvernement to kill them (in Paeroa county)

Yo are so right it's a shame that pay don't understand them and that goes for a lot of animals they are treated so bad and it shouldn't be like that .I took care of one that got into my house and took care of it until it got to big but I caught him and they came and got it and released it back in the wild where I hope he did ok and they are so cute and loveable.

I have a possum family who have lived in my house for longer than me. They don’t interact with me much because of my dog (even though he’s only ever barked at them a bit in his puppy years), but they live in the roof right above my bedroom & even if I move to another room during the day for a long period, they sometimes come with me. Probably just because my fans make it the coolest room in the house, but maybe they like the company too 🤷‍♀️ I’m sure they fall out of bed sometimes too as occasionally I hear a big thud during the day when we’re all sleeping or I’m reading. And I often hear the dash across the roof & occasionally a loud discussion or two. I’m cool with them & they’re cool with me & my dog too. Wish they’d pay rent though with all these rate hikes 🤔 😊🐶

@@allisonjames2923 , we have our resident Possums. Recently two young Possums ran across my feet when I was on my veranda . In our previous home I fed the mother with her babies under the house. She would take fruit from me , but not my son . He loves animals so I don't understand why. The story of the wonderful wild life carer reuniting Mum and her baby. Is one of the most heartwarming stories I have seen .

@@indigocheetah4172 Weird that she won’t take it from your son. Maybe she saw him do something that she misinterpreted & makes her think he was scary? Or maybe it was just a mother thing 🤷‍♀️ They really are beautiful, sweet creatures.

@@allisonjames2923 , I thought that it was because of our scent. As my son has rescued several animals , domestic , and indigenous animals. The mother possum was so sweet. I hope that she found another home. As there are massive trees nearby.

We set up my husbands cell phone on a selfie stick and put it on the dash of his car then took a portable drop light and put it on the roof of the feeding station and filmed Wooster. I bought opossum food on Amazon and mix it with hard boiled eggs, boiled chicken, apples, and berries. We do enjoy keeping this cutie happy and well feed.
