Baby Elephant Phabeni is Surrounded by the Huddle of His New Family

You can frequently see African elephants creating a wall of protection around the smallest and most vulnerable in their herd when they sense danger or a threat. They are truly the best bodyguards. Elephants have been seen to do this around a pregnant female in their herd as she gives birth and predators loom closely, such as hyena. Watch in this video as the herd huddle around Phabeni on several occasions out in the bush.
The primary role of elephant family units is to protect and raise the calves. The next generation… Especially with Phabeni being kept back at the orphanage on some days while he was sick, the herd became extra protective over him. They were very attentive when the calf was back among their giant legs.
Older cows in a herd work together to assist in looking after the calves. Where there are more females looking after the babies in a herd, the calves are more likely to survive. The females share this huge responsibility as life in the wild is full of threats and surprises. Elephants can smell and hear threats from far away, often when we as humans cannot detect anything.
The old and young bulls in our herd also offer protection to members in their family. Ours is a very unique herd since usually bulls break away from the matriarchal herd once they reach their teenage years. Our rescued herd includes bulls from 11 months (Phabeni) to 38 years (Sebakwe) of age. The elephants take family seriously. They are herd animals, and ensuring they all stay together and safe in the bush is vital to them. Huddling together when stressed or uncertain ensures they can account for everyone and protect those who need help.

And I always wonder (bc they are so smart and instinctive), if they smell/recognize their original families. I have to think that the original Herd, not Jabu, but the bunch that got transferred to this protected area, must be related somehow. Maybe not all, but a few.

I wish everybody could see this video. Most people don't realize how sensitive, loving and responsible elephants are. I blame the news for only showing them at their worst possible moments, when they are angry from mistreatment, or terrified, running and looking dangerous.

This reminds me of the Khanyisa video where the HERD came running to greet Khanyisa as she was brought by Jabulani to join the HERD. If there were videos that could show just how loving caring and accepting elephants are... It would be these two. You could see how they all surround little Phabeni whenever he is alone or walking. Even the big bulls like Sebakwe, Fishan, Samopane and Jabulani are around to show their support. This HERD is so unique in that some of them come from different areas and we're rescued and they were welcomed with open arms. It's a testament to the leadership of the Matriarch Tokwe and the older cows in the HERD. Their love and support is immeasurable. It also shows how the older bulls have come to assume the father figure role and that they will protect their HERD. What an incredibly unique and amazing HERD. This is also a testament to the leadership, devotion and sacrifice of Adine and carers. Humans could learn so much from elephants and their kindness and compassion. Thank you Adine and carers for all that you do. 🙏❤️

I believe a calm and relaxed herd is a happy herd. The sustained property provides water, food, and essential mudbaths for comfort and pleasure. There's dirt mounds for sleeping, medical care when they are ailing, and humans as entertainment when they are bored, as well as companion animals. All this in a natural setting where they can be elephants instead of exhibits. The shelter from storms gives them a sense of home and protection, which they are led back to each night for extra feeding. Of course there's loving pets and affection always waiting at the homestead, and babies to raise. Surprise marula fruit and sweet potatoes as hand fed treats. All these make for a happier, healthier herd that can enjoy each other instead of infighting or feeling too stressed to take on care of orphans. You don't see elephants, elsewhere, making off with baby blankets, because baby elephants usually never know such luxury in their lives. Elephant Eden. No, I don't work there. I'm not even on the same continent, I'm just impressed with HERD's efforts and results. I think it's a lot more work than people realize.

Can only imagine the daily work it takes to run HERD. It reminds me of another - much smaller channel I've been following, too. It does beaver rehabilitation in south Mississippi. 🌎🌿💦🦫🌲🦉 I didn't know a thing about 'castors' until a few years ago - including the fact that it takes 3 years to raise one to adulthood and how vulnerable they are before that time. (Sounds familiar, doesn't it?) 😊🍼🐘 They're very intelligent creatures who live in complicated, bonded groups. They also have voices that are as cute as baby rhino sounds! Tho they're considered pests in many places, what they do for biodiversity is brilliant. Guess I'm saying that my admiration for those bringing sanctuary and education is immense. All thanks to YT. This is truly one of the most extraordinary and remarkble qualities of the elephants. Even if it is already well-known that they are fiercely protective of their young, it still never fails to be amazing to witness time and time again. These huddles around Baby Phabeni is just so so beautiful, especially with the dominant bull ellie and other males joining the females. This herd is truly unique in the best way. I can't help but imagine sometimes that Sebakwe, Setombe, Klaserie, and Phabeni to be biological family with their very close bond. You wouldn't believe that at least one ellie is not blood-related to them. How ironically beautiful that because of their strong maternal instincts, the tiniest in the herd seems to hold a great power among a group of the largest land mammals. Thank you so much, Adine and HERD. Your videos always show the importance and beauty of love and family. God Bless You All.🙏🐘❤

But although he let the ambulance drivers inside his house he refused medical treatment and so now he's home alone again and suffering the effects of this most recent fall. I was an RN for many years although I am retired now but I should add that my father has only one eye and poor vision in the other. I'm physically disabled leading to my early retirement and I was experiencing a LOT of pain yesterday which I couldn't get under control so I REALLY needed those elephants and, as always, they make the day better!

With all the wonderful explanations typed at the bottom of the screen (thank you!) of how these highly intelligent, sentient beings are naturally, it makes me want to give each one of them a hug. I cannot do that. So instead I keep these elephants and ALL their carers in my prayers for health, safety & happiness.

Look at all those elephant bottoms surrounding and protecting little Phebanie ❤❤. So glad to see him with his new family. They accepted him so quickly just as they took in Khanyisa all those years ago! Its such a beautiful sight.

Adding my huge enjoyment of this video! So pleased & relieved that Phabeni has recovered and can now join the family on their walks. Ellie families are so impressively tight knit, all working together with the most important aim of protecting every member but most especially the youngest. Wonderful❤

I love to hear their trumpets (by the watering hole). Can’t get enough of that sound as long as everyone is ok and nothing bad is happening, I like their sounds of trumpets!

Elephant size encouragement, who is that flapping their ears really hard does that mean stay away? There is not much foraging going on. I hope the elephants are going to have enough to eat when they get back to their shelter. The baby certainly adds a lot of happiness to the elephants life and I am so thankful he has made it to 11 months. I think the elephants have new Hope in their family Setombe is probably saying please don’t sling any of that sand in my baby s face. Khanyisa love her new babydoll! That she takes her position very seriously too at such a young age. Impressive. elephant size love! at the water the darling Ellie’s remind me of grandparents saying don’t let that baby get near the water! you see his tiny little trunk over there and then they start to come out of the water and he looks so little . he flaps his ears and he has really big ears. Does that mean he will be a really big elephant ? good Lord willing, he will.

Yes, I too was wondering how much foraging happens and whether Phabeni gets anything to eat.

It's a wonderful scene: a healthy herd of elephant cows watching over the baby bull calf. But there is a hidden message as well: the human community of HERD that sees to the health of the adult elephants. It's a Great Chain of Caring that adds up to, I hope, to the survival of the African Elephant. This is why I have been a monthly donor to HERD for several years and counting.

We can watch and learn from this group of elephants. They are unrelated yet keep together to protect all in the herd bubble. They tell us that zoos are there to educate but to be honest I have learned more about elephants from watching these videos than I could from gawping at a captive Ellie in a zoo. Thanks to you all at Herd. ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
