*Awww I did this with my ferret and she LOVED it she did flips and now evertime she sees the bath she starts going crazy and dives into the bath and makes happy noises!*
Chill out people the ferret wasn't hurt. This bath time was completely supervised the entire time, like every bath time should be. Even if the water was deeper than he could touch the ferret was just fine. I'm sure it wasn't a long swim and ferrets and weasels swim in deeper water than this in the water when they cross streams and the such. This little guy was fine.
this is a great video, very educational I think. Seems that many of my fellow viewers don't understand that if the water had been shallower your ferret wouldn't be able to swim. Just like with teaching babies how to float, you don't put them in water that they could sit up in, there needs to be enough space to submerge to encourage them to swim on their own. Thanks for this! he's a cutie.
A ferret doesn't need to swim. What you saw was, unfortunately, panic swimming. If you were planted into the big sea randomly by a giant, you would win for your life, wouldn't you?
@@andrewritchie5840 not every ferret is gonna like swimming. Some love it while some would rather splash in a shallow amount. But it’s a useful thing for them to know and experience. They naturally learn from their parents. But this is all this one has.
im just sitting here and laughing at comments from people that say this is bad for the ferret end that this is animal abuse even to the know nothing about ferrets and have no idea how to treat them
+robertfacelolPL i had a ferret when i was younger, and he would go swimming with us in the inflatable pool, like she would climb up the ladder and jump into the pool
+Magicalunicorngirl247 Rainbowz made no sense tbh 😐 i know for a fact my ferrets lpfe swiming.. they see water and they just wanna jump in and start swiming.. you're being little peranoid .
+Magicalunicorngirl247 Rainbowz Ferrets belong to the Mustelidae family, the same as otters. They are natural swimmers and are quite efficient at it. Luckly the baby ferrets parent is there to support his introduction to water. But yeah, do not leave unattended for sure.
I'm sorry but for the people who are saying omg!! It's to deep or omg y r u keeping him in deep water he is panicking.omg stfu!! As a ferret owner of 3 this is not bad for a ferret nor too deep. I do this with my ferrets all the time. Yes at first they freaked put but eventually they calm down and get used to it....just like a dog would do when they first get a bath. And I'm pretty sure he wouldn't let his ferret die. Wow people calm your tits.
Earthling1984 I love your videos and your ferret is very cute! I read your conversation with Sarah Raposo and you have been a vet. Gosh, she needs to calm down! Like when a baby first has a bath it might cry a bit but then it gets used to it. Like when you first go into the sea at the beach it's a bit cold but then you get used to it. The only reason it was trying to get out was because he was used to the water yet. Just ignore what the people are saying about the water being to deep, they're talking rubbish :)
I think while ferrets are natural swimmers and it's ok for them to be in shallow waters. A stand maybe should have been put in? Let's say if they are just too tired to swim or do not want to? So at least they could have stood on the stand and chose when they felt like swimming and when they don't? It really felt like the ferret(while not stressed or panicked) did not want to swim and just had to swim so that it can keep its head above water. It didn't look enjoyable at all. Instead of constantly forcing them to swim when they might not want to. I think just like humans, animals will have times when they want to swim and when they don't.
I have had my ferret for 8 years and she is, and has always been hydrophobic. I can't bathe her without her turning into a scared quivering baby. As a result we shower together, she is not scared if I'm holding her and it feels like warm rain. She still hates water and just absolutely hates even getting her feet wet.
Hey Jason I just adopted an adorable 3 months old ferret named “Mew”. I want to able to give him the longest life as possible. Do you have any recommendations in terms of diet? What do you feed your ferret?
He's like, "wholly jebus let me out!" Is it fairly safe then, to just introduce them w/ that deep of water, or ya figure best to build up to where they can't touch the bottom anymore? I know Rats can swim, but I'm still too afraid to let Kitty or Akira in deep water, to test that; Kitty is good w/ her baths now, but Akira still has heart attacks sooooo
ok, thank you for telling me...I'm getting my 1st ferret for Christmas and I'm so excited! and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about them before Christmas
I've been subscribed for about 4 years and I definitely want to see this channel at 100,000 subscribers his videos are entertaining and amazing for learning about new pets.
this is so cute!! i just let my rats try swimming two days ago!! one loved it and the other HATED it but its all personal preferance with the rats and its pretty cute to watch!
Also letting him swim like this is NOT dangerous and if you had watched previous videos this is not the ferretts first bath! Ferretts are naturaly good swimmers all ferretts try to swim to the edge to get out because they want to jump back in its their nature not torture... if you are going to make statements about doing research before buying a ferret possibly do a little of your own before hand ferrets love to stick their head under water and blow bubbles so him going under water is not bad
It looks like Shawn is panicking a little bit when he realizes there is no way out of the bathtub. Perhaps a little step or box to let him get in or out as he wish would feel safer for him? But I love your videos, you're a great ferret handler and I know Shawn is in the best of hands. Respect to you good sir!
This is probably not be the best way to introduce a baby ferret to water. He looked kind of frightened and might connect water with fear in the future. It wasn't all bad because you did supervise him and pick him up pretty regularly but I suggest that next time you should be in the water with the ferret so he has something to climb on if needed. It's just a personal thought but I could imagen that being in a big white tank filled with something wet and new might be a bit scary. Btw the little fella is adorable
Earthling1984 If you make videos about animals (obviously because you love it and you wanna educate people on how to... etc), don't ever answser to people who comment about abuse. You'll start meeting people who think their pet is a human beeing and treat them as such (they do not understand it doesnt work like this, it can do more wrong than good in fact), but it's in their heads! Simple example : in your video about "what you should know about ferrets", when you grab your ferret by the neck (even though it works like that in the wild to educate etc), some people will cry out you're hurting your animal. So please don't mind these people and keep making educational videos, I'm about to be a rat owner in 4 to 5 weeks and I would be totally lost without these type of tutorials. Thanks again, cheers and I luv you channel (even though you have a ferret and i'll have a rat :p). Peace!
Earthling1984 My pleasure, it calmed me down a little bit to write it down, cause when you watch a lot of this kind of videos, it really gets frustrating! :) Oh btw, have you ever owned rats?
He is soooo freakin cute!! I used to have 5 of my own and I'd put them all in the tub together for baths and my youngest ferret would get in fights with the shower head, he was a riot. unfortunately my younger sister developed an allergy to them so I had to give them away. :(
he should have something to stand on, or the water should be shallower at least. It's cute, but he should have somewhere he can climb up to catch his breath
@@tori-rae558 Not at all. People often comment this nonsense. The thing is, the ferret is in a small tub. Where do you expect it to go? Just swim right in the middle? Of course not. He was going to play, swim, go here, go there. He was perfectly safe and not scared.
Aha just got my own ferret today :) Totally gonna watch all your ferret videos and some others to see sorts of training and whatnot. Already watched your before you buy one a few weeks ago. Having trouble with the biting already lol. He's just a baby so he doesn't know better, gonna try the scruff technique on him and see if that works :) Freaking idiots who talk about ferrets as if they know better than someone who worked with vets lol. "Hi I'm like 12 years old and totally know more about animals than you do you abusive jerk" lol just ignore them. Ferrets are like otters and are meant to swim.
Scruffing is bad for a ferret. have one myself. scruffing just gives them a lot of stress. the only way for ferrets to learn to not bite is to redirect the bite. punishment is bad
How often can you put your ferrets in water says bath them once a month but I presume that’s if washing them with soap, how often in just plain warm water ?
next time fill the tub up to the point where it's comfortable for the ferret. He's panicking and trying to get out as well as trying to keep his head above the water.
+Kassi Garcia Ferrets are in the same family as otters. They are natural swimmers. They can also stand on their back legs; he could have stood if he wanted. Do some research on ferrets and how good of swimmers they are.
ahhh! his little peets are so cutee. I want a ferret so bad but my bf and his dad (who i live with) would absolutely hate the smell. Also I work a lot and I would feel so bad not being able to give it the attention it needs, I already feel bad for my kitty who spends a lot of her day alone when I'm working.
@@earthling1984 but some aren't and it's making kids think that they can make there ferrets swim and some die from it so im just saying i wasn't trying to be rude sorry😊
You realize ferrets are natural swimmers and most love to swim? Introducing them to water is something that would happen in nature. Properly cared for and watched over by an amazing pet owner like me is no issue. In fact it's encouraged.
Wtf. That water is way too deep for a baby ferrets first time in water. No wonder it kept trying to escape! It literally killed me to watch this video. Poor little thing! Do some research on how to properly care for ferrets before you get one!
So, if I throw a child who is a weak swimmer in the 10ft end of a swimming pool, and they manage to swim even though they are clearly struggling, that's ok right? That ferret was clearly panicking, and I know a baby ferret is not a human child, but that's still just as fucked up.
earthling1984 Also, instead of just throwing a ferret in water that's way over it's head, aren't you supposed to fill the bath tub so that there is a deep and shallow end, like a swimming pool? That way the poor thing won't panic. If the ferret feels uncomfortable it can go towards the shallow end of the tub. That's what I've been told by vets and have read in books about caring for ferrets. I'm not sure what your credentials are, but I would hope you didn't just make a video based on what you think is ok without doing research first. I'm not saying you're wrong wanting to get your ferret accustomed to swimming, but I think you're going about it the wrong way.
So, when you take your ferret in for a swim, this would generally be when? I know you said that bath time was only 1 or 2 times a month so maybe the swim would be directly after/during a bath?
Have you ever thought of breeding guinea pigs? They are great easy pets and if you have any questions on them just go to my channel. Its called The Cavy Channel and you can add requests.
So is it okay to handle a ferret like that? I was just thinking if you held a guinea pig like that it would be cruel but the ferrets always look comfortable? Do they have a super flexible spine?
+Earthling1984 I wasn't saying otherwise. As I said, it looked like he was doing fine. What I was getting at was, that it'd be nice for him to have a place to sit in the tub. Even a simple upside down plastic hand tote would be more than enough rise. I have no worries about the ferret in your care, never did. :)
Edwin Stridh Yeah, that's what I meant. They are in the same family. The Mustelidae (from Latin mustela, weasel) are a family of carnivorous mammals, including the otter, badger, weasel, marten, ferret, mink and wolverine.
@@lindahede8743 honestly I think of was trying to get out because it wasn't used to the water yet, even if he was trying to get out it's fine it isn't animal abuse.
Linda Hede Bruh it wasn’t. It was his first time that’s why he was a little uncertain. You know they belong to the Mustelidea family right? They’re all excellent swimmers. Ferret mothers even push their babies in water to help them learn how to swim.
@@legitme7572 Yup. They are naturally amazing swimmers. He is in a tub, nowhere to go; so, of course it is going to look like he is "trying to get out". No danger, no abuse, just a cute young ferret learning to swim in shallow water for a short time period.
So can they get bathed and go swimming in the same month? I bathed Ghost a week or so ago and I was just wondering if he could go swimming or if that would be bad for his skin. He's 2 months old, by the way.
It's his first swim, and he isn't fully comfortable with it yet. That being said, they are great swimmers, and if you start them early, they usually will end up liking the water and having fun in it later in life.
You know, not every ferrets like the same thing. Not every humans like to be dipped into a pretty deep pool. But at the same time, you must force him to stay, so he learns that trying to get out Won't get him out so he should give it up and enjoy!
***** Ferrets who don't get introduced to water on an early age will most likely dislike water for the rest of their life. One of my ferrets was about 1.5 years old when I got him and obviously never got exposed to water at a young age. Whenever I try to wash him in very shallow water (where he can just stand in) he tries his hardest to get out of the bath. While my other ferrets I got at a younger age are completely fine with water because I could train them. And I see in your video you do like ferrets with plumes tied to their neck, which has absolutely no benefit to the ferret. But yet, that alright?
