Hedgehogs are one of our most common patients here at Wildlife Aid. Over the winter, we can have almost 400 of them needing round the clock care, food and treatment!
Many of them arrive as tiny, eyes-closed orphans, and they need a lot of care if they are to make it into adulthood and back to the wild!
Here is the journey of one of our hedgehogs, from admittance to final release!
PLEASE DONATE - Just £3 from every viewer can help us save many more animals! Online: bit.ly/wafdonate Text Donation: Text WILD3 to 70300 to give £3.00, (WILD5 to give £5.00 and WILD10 to give £10.00) UK residents only.

If all the people in the world would be as caring and gracious as you people from Wildlife Aid were, we'd have heaven on earth. Bless you.

If GB does manage to keep hedgehogs from going extinct in the wild - you will know your played a significant part of that! Great job!

It's incredible that the UK has these lovely creatures in their yards! I've never seen one in person. I live in the mountainous area of Tennessee and we have none in the wild. We have loads of possums and I've hand raised some of those.

S Venable, I also wish we had them. (I’m an Illinoisan). BTW, I absolutely LOVE the Smokies in TN. It was our favorite summer vacation spot when our kids were young. Gorgeous country!

@@drkatel The last time I traveled thru Illinois I was amazed at your roads! All we have here are curvy, mountainous roads that are treacherous in the snow! I worked for the same company for 41 yrs and just got a 4WD eventually.

I wish we had them, too! I grew up on the Iowa/Illinois border and now live in Indiana. Closest I get to hedgehogs in the garden is feeding squirrels. lol I do ❤️ my squirrels!

Hoglets arent illegal in TN like they are in some states. They are illegal in PA, GA and a few other states as they could easily live outdoors and become a pest. When I worked expat we had them in the garden. They did a marvelous job of keeping the insect population down.

If humans don't intervene, how do those hedgehogs born at the end of summer survive winter?
@alexisgrunden1556
@alexisgrunden1556 4 года назад
I think that most don't, but those that do are either extremely lucky or exceptionally skilled at finding food, both of which are good traits to pass on. It's a genetic gamble.

Adorable! I love hedgehogs, even though they are considered pests in my country, I am very fond of them and think they are misunderstood creatures. One lives in my garden, and I’m very happy for it. 🦔 💗

'Pests'? If anything they are a gardener's friend because they eat many pests!

Do hedgehogs in Portugal and Italy hibernate or do they remain active so more of the second litter survives there?

Can you explain why there is a second brood in October? If they come naturally in October shouldn't they be able to survive in their natural environment, too? 🤔

Have you ever had a problem with the animals imprinting on humans before being moved into silent units?
@wildlifeaid

Luckily no. There is always a risk, but we are very careful in how we do things to ensure it doesn't happen :)

Are they carnivores like the dogs? I was just wondering if that lining of dogfood and carbs inside there is bad for them as it is for the dogs. What about giving them some animal flesh that is clean from our industrial processed food? Maybe they evolve better and do not die and wander off. Just thinking out loud here. I don't know what they should suppose to eat. Maybe insects. I love these as young and we found them and fed them raw milk, strawberries and they prefer to eat the milk or creamy milk. and we gave them shit food like that because we just didn't know better as 13 years and wanted to help them. Dog food is not even for dogs. We give the german Shepards a locally raised duck or bird on a natural diet, sometimes raw chicken. Not cooked because then the bones become brittle, but this is fin as long it is raw. And maybe 2 pasteurized eggs on top of the bowl to give it some fatty acids. Sometimes we give the dogs big bones to play and eat to clean the teeth with meat on from grass-fed cows. And the last farm dog we had became 17-18 human years. And it was a mixed-race but still, it only was fed high nutrients food of high quality from the farm. Unless the time's other people fed it shit food when it was going on his own trips. I didn't like that. So we had a collar made saying "Do not feed him Sugar, only Meat.
