We’re going to go over the 3-to-2 Nap Transition today: when the best time to transition is, whether your baby is ready and how you can master this nap transition.
In general, the age for this nap transition is between 6-12 months. Usually we see most babies transition between 6-9 months.
What are the signs that your baby is ready to drop the third nap?
Sign 1: Your baby refuses the third nap
If your baby is suddenly and consistently refusing that nap. Shes crying more, taking longer to fall asleep or taking a shorter nap.
Sign 2: The third nap pushes bedtime too late
Your baby has been happy going to bed at bedtime for many weeks or months. Suddenly, you’re seeing bedtime get pushed later and later every night. If bedtime is becoming 9pm or later, it’s better to just drop that third catnap and adjust your bedtime.
Sign 3: Your baby is sleeping too much during the day
This sign can be more subtle. If your baby is sleeping 3 hours or more during naps, it's too much.
Your baby might start waking up in the night happy and wanting to play, where they have been previously sleeping well at night. They’re not crying or tired.
Another sign is if they start waking early, around 5-6am. They’re not cranky or tired. They want to play, giggle, laugh.
When not to drop the third nap:
If your baby’s day and night sleep have recently been disrupted, I would say it’s better to wait. Don’t go through any sort of transitions in your baby’s routine or schedule right now.
Your baby may be teething, sick, or going through a sleep regression. Give it a few days or up to a week.
There are so many sleep regressions around this age. If your baby is in this age range and suddenly they are really restless when they’re trying to sleep, that’s usually a big sign that your baby is going through a sleep regression. They’re harder to settle and they’re waking more often. If you suspect your little one is going through a sleep regression, give it up to a week or so and then re-assess to see whether it’s the right time to drop the third nap.
If your baby's going through a big development, physical or social (engaging more, learning to speak), wait a few days.
Before you transition from 3 to 2 naps:
Your baby’s 2 naps have to be long - each should be 1 hour or more.
If your baby is taking short catnaps in the day, you need to work on first extending those naps to be an hour or more each, before you work on dropping the third nap.
In my naps program, Getting Downtime in the Daytime, we get these short catnappers to extend their naps. So that they have long, restful naps of 1 hour or more.
Your baby’s daytime sleep should be 2-3 hours for this age range.
It’s better if your baby’s afternoon nap is the longer one because this will help them make it until bedtime. The morning nap should be 45 minutes - 1 hour. The afternoon nap should be 1-2 hours long.
When you drop the third nap, pay attention to the awake times and move bedtime earlier. The Ideal Bedtime for a baby who has dropped down to 2 naps/day is between 6-7pm.
Keep track of awake times!
• 6-8 month old: 2-3 hours
• 9-12 month old: 2.5-3.5 hours
Babies are programmed to only be awake for a short amount of time before they get tired.
When you’re ready to transition:
Some parents drop the catnap straight away. But if you’re not ready for that, what I suggest you do is just wean off that catnap over the next few weeks.
Wean off it:
• Week 1: Drop to 30 minutes - wake baby after this time
• Week 2: Drop to a 20 minute nap
• Week 3: Drop to a 10-15 minute nap
Use motion naps, naps on the go in the stroller, car or carrier.
As you trim down the nap, just move bedtime a little bit earlier over several days. And watch your awake times!
My last tip for nap transitions: Move slowly!
The nap transition will take a few weeks. But we’re going to get there, slowly and surely!

Hello. Thank you for your video. Very useful and easily explained. I moved my 8 month old to 2 naps. I was waiting for a 3 weeks to make sure she is ready. I have questions about the lunch nap. Is it set by clock. Or always goes 3 hours exactly after morning nap? As sometimes the morning nap can be 30 min earlier or later. Depends on her wake time and also I have to do a school run. As she doesn't sleep in the pushchair. Thank you.

Hello, my 8 month old twins (7 months adjusted) will sometimes nap a total of 4 hours on their first two naps. Should I be waking them up from these so they don’t nap past 3 hours? They also are up from these naps by around 1pm and are struggling with their 3rd nap! They are then up for 5 hours sometimes before bedtime. What should I do? Stretch their awake times so they can have just the two naps or cut their naps short so they can take that third nap?

Hello Lauren! I would definitely try to limit naps to about 3 hours per day. Also, start to look for signs that your LO's are ready to move to 2 naps! Check out our guide here. www.babysleepmadesimple.com/3-to-2-nap-transition-6-months-baby-2 Best, Alyssa, BSMS Support Team

Hi My baby is 5.5 month and she is napping pretty good even the catnap. No protest at all. I'm trying to make her total nap 3 hours in total. But these days she woke up at 4AM and not able to fall back asleep with crying for more than an hour. She has been sleeping through the night and this type of long night wake is very confusing to me. Is this a sign of nap transition from 3 to 2?

Hi there Shuo. This guide will let you know whether your LO is ready for this transition or not, and how to do it. Normally, the "symptoms" have to occur for 2 or more weeks to decide that your baby is ready to drop the third nap. www.babysleepmadesimple.com/3-to-2-nap-transition-6-months-baby-2 Also, check out our 5 month old sleep guide that will let you know what to expect from your baby's sleep and how to get her sleeping better. Hi, my 9 month old baby is with the babysitter from 8 am to 1 pm everyday. Than i come home. When she is with the babysitter, she naps every 2 hours. Each of them last about 45 min to 1 hour. Her last nap ends at 12 then I arrive home at 1pm. she stays awake like 4 and a half hour and naps at 4:30 pm. Last nap is more than 1 hour which makes bedtime go late. Is it 3-2 transition or smth else? Thx a lot

Hello, due to cat napping and my own personal schedule I had my baby on a six to six schedule since 5 months. Naps have recently started to lengthen to an hour. She is 7 months today and I’m always just guessing if I should drop the nap or wait since there is no protest. Shall I wait a bit since her naps just started extending? Should I extend windows regardless? She gets 2hours to 2 1/2 hours a day maximum. She wakes up in the morning at 5:30/6. Thank you for your time 🤍

Hi! Congrats on your newest addition. You don't sound anxious at all! You sound just like a Mama wanting to ensure her LO gets the rest her body needs. You are doing a great job. An early bedtime can work really well for a lot of kiddos! You can also move it later too as she gets older, so I promise, she is not "ruined" whatsoever! The majority of babies move to 2 naps between 8-9 months, so if your LO isn't protesting, I would keep your nap the same. We also have an amazing program called 21 Days to Peace and Quiet which helps give you all of the guidelines and recommendations for your child now, and each month as she ages. You can also join our support community too which gives you a jam-packed FAQ video library and 8 Zoom calls to join! You will be able to ask a sleep consultant all of your personal questions and get answered tailored to your individual child. It is a game changer! Oh my gosh my baby is 8.5 months and will not nap bc she keeps standing up in her crib and can’t get back down. She will not even nap but once a day. She was doing 3 naps with the last one a catnap. I followed your other videos. I just feel like the last 2-3 weeks have been awful and I can’t even sit down from 7pm-9pm bc she cries and screams bloody murder for the whole 2 hours. It’s absolutely horrible. Please let me know any recommendations. I get so much crap from certain family bc I still have her taking the 3 naps and so I try to stop and only do 2 but I truly feel she needs 3 naps per day bc when she doesn’t she’s just sleepy and restless. If you think she should be doing 2 then please correct me. But I do feel bad sometimes bc I get crap from family saying I “make her sleep too much” and that’s just upsetting to me although I do know my child better than they do.

Hey Hannah, Well-meaning families can make it so tough for Mums. But I agree it sounds like she still needs 3 naps a day at this stage for her. This is very normal for some babies to still have 3 naps a day at this age. Here is our FREE guide on what to do when your LO is standing and won't sleep: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/baby-stands-sits-up-in-crib-wont-sleep In order to give you the best support and help you with this all I recommend you join our 21 days to Peace and Quiet Program where we can help you with ALL aspects of your LOs sleep and make a plan for the 3 to 2 nap transition when the time comes. www.babysleepmadesimple.com/baby-sleep-consultant Clare, BSMS Support Team
