A look back at beautiful Orangutan mother Emma and her sweet baby orangutan Hillda in January 2023 when Hillda was 18 months old and more dependent on her doting mom.
In the video Emma sees the baby's dad Puluh approaching and reacts by swinging down with baby Hillda holding on to get out of his way. Puluh is not seen as a threat to his offspring but the mothers instinct is to protect their babies and give him space especially at feeding time!
This Sumatran Orangutan family have featured in the popular TV series ' The Secret Life Of The Zoo ' which aired on British TV between 2015 and 2021

Hillda no longer has the wild and crazy hair she had as a baby, but will get thicker and longer as she matures like her sisters who have beautiful chestnut coloured thick hair
Endangered Orangutans
Sumatran Orangutans are a critically endangered species of Great Ape, threatened to the edge of extinction, due to the ongoing destruction of the Environment in their native homeland of The Indonesian Island of Sumatra. The destruction of their native forests is largely to make way for the planting of palm oil, which is used in the manufacture of many products in developed nations, such as food products and cleaning products.
Baby Orangutans at Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo is the only Zoo in the UK to House and Care for Sumatran Orangutans. They are part of the breeding program for this important and vulnerable species, ensuring there is a strong genic population in zoos and wildlife centres across the world, essential for the future survival of these magnificent animals.
These rare Sumatran Baby Orangutans are absolutely adorable and so much fun to watch, Young Sumatran Orangutans interact with each other and learn from the behaviours of other Orangutans in their Family group.
