Procyonoidea is a superfamily of carnivorans currently native only to North America, South America, and Eastern Asia, this superfamily is known to include the skunks, stink badgers, raccoons, bassarisks, red panda, coatis, olingos, olinguito, and kinkajou, this superfamily contains only twenty-eight extant species within eleven genera and four families, the four extant families within the Procyonoidea superfamily are Mephitidae (Skunks and Stink Badgers), Procyonidae (Raccoons and Bassarisks), Ailuridae (Red Panda), and Nasuidae (Coatis, Olingos, Olinguito, and Kinkajou), among the procyonoids, Mephitidae is the most basal extant family and consists of twelve extant species within four genera and two subfamilies, the two subfamilies within Mephitidae are Mydainae (Stink Badgers and Fossil Relatives (contains 1 genus: Mydaus (includes 2 species: Mydaus javanensis (Sunda Stink Badger) and Mydaus marchei (Palawan Stink Badger))) and Mephitinae (Skunks (contains 3 genera: Conepatus (includes 4 species: Conepatus leuconotus (North American Hog-Nosed Skunk), Conepatus semistraitus (Striped Hog-Nosed Skunk), Conepatus chinga (Molina's Hog-Nosed Skunk), and Conepatus humboldtii (Humboldt's Hog-Nosed Skunk)), Spilogale (includes 4 species: Spilogale putorius (Eastern Spotted Skunk), Spilogale gracilis (Western Spotted Skunk), Spilogale angustifrons (Southern Spotted Skunk), and Spilogale pygmaea (Pygmy Spotted Skunk)), and Mephitis (includes 2 species: Mephitis mephitis (Striped Skunk) and Mephitis macroura (Hooded Skunk))), then followed by Procyonidae, which contains only five extant species within two genera, the only two surviving genera of the family Procyonidae are Procyon (Raccoons) and Bassariscus (Bassarisks), the three living species of raccoon are the Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor), the Pygmy Raccoon (Procyon pygmaeus), and the Crab-Eating Raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) and the two living species of bassarisk are the Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) and the Cacomistle (Bassariscus sumichrasti), the most recent split among the procyonoids is between the families Ailuridae and Nasuidae, the only extant member of the family Ailuridae is the Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) and the family Nasuidae contains ten extant species within four genera and two subfamilies, the Nasuidae family is divided into the subfamilies Potosinae (Kinkajou, Olingos, and Olinguito) and Nasuinae (Coatis), the five extant members of the Potosinae subfamily are the Olinguito (Bassaricyon neblina), the Northern Olingo (Bassaricyon gabbii), the Eastern Lowland Olingo (Bassaricyon alleni), the Western Lowland Olingo (Bassaricyon medius), and the Kinkajou (Potos flavus) and the five extant species of coati are the Eastern Mountain Coati (Nasuella meridensis), the Western Mountain Coati (Nasuella olivacea), the Brown-Nosed Coati (Nasua nasua), the White-Nosed Coati (Nasua narica), and the Cozumel Coati (Nasua nelsoni).
