I've raised many skunks..they tame almost instantly and never spray at people once they are tame..They swing there butt around because of instinct and not aggression or wanting to spray.Even wild ones only spray as a last resort.They are fun to have around and always getting into trouble.
@PancakemonsterFO4
@PancakemonsterFO4 3 года назад
Fact: Skunks have a limited defensive liquid storage so they will often act like they will spray you but will only use the liquid if you really push your boundaries. Their bad sight doesn't help with that either
@alexisgrunden1556
@alexisgrunden1556 3 года назад
But if you do boundary-stomp or scare them that badly, they've got great range and can multi-shot that mess. Better to just give the cute, fluffy lil' stinkers their personal space~
@fjp9

i have a dumb question. do they poop out of the same hole that they spray? can they do both at the same time for a double whammy?
@alexisgrunden1556
@alexisgrunden1556 3 года назад
@@fjp9 It's not dumb; asking questions is how you learn~ ^u^ And to answer that, no; the spray comes from a set of glands (anal/musk); the actual anus is a different orifice. I don't know if they can poop and spray at the same time, but I do know that the spray is projectile (a pissed-off skunk can nail you from up to 15 feet away!), and unless something is _VERY_ wrong, poop is not projectile.
@fjp9
@fjp9 3 года назад
@@alexisgrunden1556 thanks. i was wondering if skunks get diarrhea and could do a real nasty projectile. lol
@alexisgrunden1556
@alexisgrunden1556 3 года назад
@@fjp9 Hahaha, no problem. Like I said though, if the poop is projectile, too, then something is very wrong. As a general rule for most mammals, projectile poop is not a sign of anything positive health-wise~ But considering that skunks will happily root through garbage and eat rotten things at times, I doubt the usual suspects would apply for causation of symptoms.

My dad brought home 3 little baby skunks when I was a kid. We kept them in a cage outside at night and let them wander around the yard during the day like chickens. Fed them catfood and bugs. They really loved our black/white dog and followed him everywhere. He was petrified of them because he had already been sprayed by skunks multiple times so it was fun watching him try and avoid them. They all wandered off eventually and we would smell them once in awhile in the fall when it was cold at night. They would stomp and hiss and do all the skunk things.

The surgery is awful we had to cover everything in surgery in plastic. It is almost impossible to do the surgery with out the gland leaking. The whole hospital smelled like skunk for a week. What was worse was the surgery took so long we had to split it in two. One for each gland. So after he healed from the first one we had to do it all over again.

We had one back in the 70s. Bought him through a pet shop, they came from a skunk farm in Minnesota. He was so kewl. Teeth like razors. God help around chicken or cheese. We fed him dog food I think, cause cat food had too much protein. The hand stomps are his warning signs to others, leave me alone or you'll pay. The back stomps are kind of priming the pump. The feet have to on the ground so they can use the muscles to do the spraying. They are very clean, have very little non-offensive body or fur odor and take perfectly to a litter box. He loved riding on my shoulder when I was driving. THAT got some looks. A meter reader came in one day, and almost freaked when he found the little guy guarding the meter he was trying to read. His bed was in that utility room. Later, he would get under one side of a vanity table and then work the bottom drawer open a bit, then climb up to nest in the drawer. Superb pets. His sprayer was clipped and cauterized before we got him. He had to have shots. Sadly pneumonia claimed him.

My wife and I had a pet skunk when we were first married: he was a lot of fun and a great pet. The musk glands are removed at about 3-4 weeks and you have to get them by the time they are about 4-5 weeks old: you bottle feed them for the first 2-3 weeks, keep them with you constantly and let them imprint on you. They use a litter box like a cat or can be trained to go outside. Ours was brown and white, ate Eukanuba dog food and some select scraps that we provided. He'd climb up in my lap to nap and get his back and ears scratched, would play with our cat, and was the most inquistive animal you can imagine. Yes, when they get unhappy with you or are playfully aggressive the will stomp those front feet and point their rear at you. Meeting people at the door with him on my shoulder was a lot of fun - people didn't know what to do when confronted by a skunk. We had to give him up when I joined the Marine Corps. In recent years I started looking into getting another one but the legeslature in my state for some reason decided to outlaw ownership of skunks - stupid. They make GREAT pets.

I was biking home one night in the rain, and found some stopped cars, along with a pack of baby skunks aimlessly milling around in the middle of the road. I got to play crossing guard and prevent oncoming traffic from hitting them. I then directed them to where I hoped their mother was (one side of the road had good hiding spots, the other didn't.) I used a wet T-shirt as a capture net to get 3 of them across that didn't seem to know where to go. I went home slightly stinky. It was a very cute experience though. They were adorable, and shockingly happy to crawl over my feet.

Cute little guy. One night, a hundred years ago, I was halfway drunk walking home in the dark and I saw this poor little kitten all alone. I called it but it didn't come to me so I followed it and tried to pick it up. It ran away and I just continued on my way. Keep in mind that I'm probably 15 years old. I walked into my house, hoping my parents didn't want to talk to me, since I smelled like beer. My Mom screams, what the hell is that smell? That kitty was a skunk and sprayed me and I didn't even know it. I couldn't smell it. It over-powered the smell of beer though. Had to throw away all my clothes and my favorite hiking boots.

Somewhat off topic, but this hilarious: My high school bf was best friends with the dumbest guy ever. When they were at the beach one day, my bf told his friend that if you put a crab into a glass of beer it will get drunk and then will start walking forward. Sure enough, the guy caught a crab one day and put it in beer. He pulled it out, laid it on the sand, and eagerly waited for this drunk crab to walk forward. Unfortunately, he would never see this miracle of nature. Not because it's stupid and impossible, but because he left it in beer too long and it drowned. The most laughable part of this story is that this dude spent several weeks trying to catch another crab. His plan was to get it drunk, but pull it out of the beer quicker than he did with the first drunk crab. Still no clue that a crab (even a drunk one), will never walk forward.

I had my nametag on, apron, all ready to go. And all I could think of was how terrible I would smell if it hit me, and how much nobody would believe me if I called in saying I couldn't work my shift because I got sprayed by a skunk. I remember the skunk jumping up in the air and doing a 180 landing with his rear end facing me. And I instantly did the same thing, but sideways. The skunk missed me, luckily. I made sure to let the rest of the crew know how close they were to being short-staffed that night.
