One of the birds' regular feeders grew uneasy about the large crowd of onlookers getting too close to the swans, so he led (all of) them slowly to the water, where the cygnets put on quite an adorable little display.
Watch the one cygnet hesitate (0:37) before jumping in (0:47) to join the rest.

I don't like when people get too close to swans first off you're probably making them nervous second if you make one wrong move the parents will see you as a threat and attact and they can be very aggressive

I'm trying to figure out what the tail wiggle means. The last cygnet plops into the water (barely missing the cob) and immediately starts paddling and wiggles his tail. I'm thinking its like, "there! did it" Then the cob pulls his head out of the water, sees his last offspring has made it in the pond, turns toward his mate and his offspring and wiggles HIS tail. I'm thinking its like "there! all present and accounted for!"

Perfectly logical, maybe.

LOL! does not really matter, I guess that interpretation is as good as any other. Thanks.

BTW, how did you know which adult swan is the male? I can tell by getting a good look at the facial knob, having visited these birds for years. Blue Boy (papa) has the rounder knob, while Blanche (mama) has a flattened one.

SF Videos I was looking at the behavior of parents and cygnets both. The babies often follow their mama the most. The cob is the primary defender, the pen is the primary nurturer but both parents will defend or nurture. When walking about, it is often (not always) the pen that leads and the cygnets follow her and the cob follows behind. He will rush to get between any potential danger and his mate or cygnets so there are times it varies. So to bottom line it - it was a guess, I couldn't know just from their behavior. I was making a joke but was seriously asking if anyone knows what the tail waggle means! PS Was I right in my guess?

Excellent observations, Julie. It's kind of tricky to tell from the video, but I think you did correctly identify the cob. So, little Miss Know-It-All, why are swans called cobs and pens? ; )

Im not happy with how close those people were. They are not pets, they are wild animals and im actually surprised that the parents were not even hissing at them.
