Eastern Cottontail Rabbits often build their nesting sites in yards and open spaces. Please monitor your yard for nests before lawn mowing or allowing pets to roam outdoors.
If you stumble across a nest, do not move the bunnies because their mother will be unable to find them. She will return at dusk and dawn to feed and groom her babies.

When I was a kid my neighbor came across a nest of baby eastern cottontails, and she showed me and my sister. They all had fur, and my sister and I each held one. Not too long after, the momma came back for the babies

It is actually it happened once when I had a wild baby bunny I touched it and the next day the mom wasn’t feeding them with full bellies and so it was my responsibility to call a rehabilitation to see if it was okay. It does abandon them!

@@angie7416 No, it is highly unlikely that an eastern cottontail rabbit would abandon its babies simply because they have been touched by humans or have the scent of humans on them. Contrary to popular belief, most wild animals, including rabbits, do not possess a strong sense of smell like canines, and they do not rely solely on scent to recognize their offspring. In general, rabbits have a keen sense of smell, but their main method of identifying their young is through visual recognition and vocal cues. The mother rabbit will recognize her babies by their appearance and specific behaviors. As long as the babies are not injured or handled excessively, the presence of human scent should not trigger the mother rabbit to abandon them. It is important, however, to minimize disturbance and handle rabbit nests as little as possible. It's best to leave the babies alone unless you are certain they are orphaned or in immediate danger.

I found a baby on a work site and thought it was lost. I was ignorant and instead brought it home. It's been a year now. The Bonny love to play.,At the early stage I thought the bunny was a female so I named it Tatiana, finally found out it a male. Lol but he loves being Tatiana.I don't know how stop him from biting my feet at night when I'm sleeping. He never wants to be touched but he like jumping on me.

I've never seen a cottontail with a "chin" like that. Is it ok?
@LENSCTube

This is Lola, she is a domestic rabbit. Domestic rabbits are different from the native Eastern Cottontail, but we used Lola in this video to share similarities. The large “dewlap” is the fatty skin fold on her chest. Females develop this when they are sexually mature. They prepare for their babies by pulling fur from the dewlap to line their nest. Thanks for your question!
