Babydoll is my own personal Harley Davidson Panhead. I've had her for around 30 years. She's been waiting to go for a ride since I've been giving attention to other bikes. So, she's getting a quick inspection and wipedown. We're going for a Sunday ride in the mountains tomorrow. So these are the quick inspections I'll make today.

The amount of kicks required to start an old Harley is directly related to the number of people watching. Thanks for the video Mike, great as always. I can't wait to see you working on the shovel again, as I know I have alot of things to do to my '77 FXS lowrider as well.

Not many things in life appeal to my eyes more than an old Harley Davidson. I own several old motorcycles , but none of them are Harleys ... but, as a child , me and my brothers just loved riding on our Dad's Harley. I remember once he brought home a couple of wheels and several baskets of parts and watched over several months as he assembled it in our Utility room .. Mom did not like that at all, but she knew how much it meant to Dad. He bought it for 50 dollars back in 1965. It was a 194? 45 cubic inch WL? When he wheeled that bike out of the house door and cranked it up... that was the most beautiful biike I ever saw. After begging for a ride , he took us down the rode and back and that was a memory ... a very good one.

Great idea on using heat gun on rear chain...Lube chain BEFORE it gets exposed to more road dirt from warming it up by riding...> I like using anti seize = especially steel fasteners into aluminum thread ..See a lot of folks using Lock-tite on steel bolts or screws into aluminum these days... Not sure but all I could come up with is MAYBE modern mfg.'d aluminum case threads MIGHT hold up to steel screws better...???... IDK but IMHO anti seize & check that their snug every so often is much easier than repairing damaged threads in aluminum....>Static battery reading of 13.04 V after sitting for a few months IS impressive.
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 года назад
Yes to all of it, except when putting proper hardware into any material. I like to do it with cleanliness. I want it to stay tight with nothing else. "Proper hardware for the job." Threadlocker in some instances, not all. Same with "antiseize."

Good morning Mr Pacific, Cameraman Mike 🌞happy Sunday. You know, with the colder months up here in Boston, I really get some downtime on the real frigid days below 35*, that’s my riding cutoff point. Being a 2002 with a Mikuni 42 and bit of a nasty attitude, having forged pistons,those long durations mixed with scavenging going through a Thunderheader, she likes to be warmed up a bit, so I always bring the block up to 50* with a space heater before starting, fires right off. Point being, riding here in the winter isn’t only a little more involved but the salt, mud and crap all over the road destroys my bike, which is fine, she’s a rider but I just bought a BDL 2” OBP with lock up clutch that ages 5 years in two months. Hardware gets rusty, chrome is stained, the 32 balls need cleaning as they rust up a little under the pressure plate, ruined almost immediately and chain maintenance on my final drive after every ride, it just gets filthy. I can’t keep my hands off of her. I do plan on moving out west or down south eventually, I need to ride, it’s my therapy and there isn’t any substitute that compares. So today, maybe I’ll rebuild the Mikuni 42 for 💩 and giggles. I’m not sure if I had a point Mike but I always enjoy learning from you on those older girls and enjoy tinkering on mine, like you said, they are meant to be built over and over. Take care of yourself Mike.

Always good to hear from you. That's the point. And it is interesting to hear what it's like in different places. With all the things happening today, people are relocating like crazy for all sorts of reasons. And our great escape is generally "a ride in the country." Nothing like it. Take care. Hope it warms up soon for you.

An old print of Hopper's 'Nighthawks', low lit by sentry lamp, a young Baby Doll could morph right in, a leaning, ticking vamp. her stillness as she sits at rest, yet awake for refreshed hands as the chill night air lends credence to, the silence of the Pans. (A couple of shovels & a knuckle have declared this rhyme 'Headist' & complained to the great valve pocket in the sky) This was England, but thanks to Storms Eunice & Franklin, everything is now somewhat further East than yesterday. Adjusted many points in my day but probably only a fraction of what you have done. Back in the day I remember noticing that a match stick cover flap measured .016" (16 thousandth). The same feeler gauge size as what some of the early VW Bugs required. The only thing I can add in reference to the points is to make sure the block that rides on the distributor cam is lubricated. If it is dry it will prematurely wear and then the point gap will decrease and the ignition timing will retard. This will not allow the ignition coil to charge up enough to give you the proper spark intensity. I can remember looking at a set of points and noticing red dust around the points and it was a result of the red phenolic block wearing down and leaving a red dust residue. The complaint from the customer was probably a lost of power. By the way Mike, you are one in a million. Very few people would do this after the bike sitting just a few months but not many have a love of motorcycles like you do!

It varies from brand to brand, load weight, riding habits. I find that Dunlops, in general, require fairly high pressure. Consult with Dunlop. Read what they write about their tires. I try to keep my opinions to a minimum.

Depends on how deep they are. There are lots of products out there, but if the windshield is "coated," it may be time to replace it. The one on Babydoll is from Tedd Cycle (V-Twin) in New York. I usually replace them every few years, then start modifying 'til they fit the way I want them.

Hi Mike, I'm still having starting problems with my 1964 FL Panhead, I bought it in 2016 and had it shipped over to me, here in England. I have owned and worked on BSA motorcycles since I was old enough to have a licence in 1970, I bought my first Harley in 1998, a new Evo. My question is, and as I don't know that much about the bike, like what parts have been fitted to it over the years, can the circuit breaker/distributor timing slip? It has a single points circuit breaker and has started well in the past, then all of a sudden it just wont start or run nicely. A friend of mine who knows more about these old Harley's than me, got it running well, and then even with him, it suddenly wouldn't start or run nicely, until he moved the timing, one tooth, and then it run and started properly. The same has happened to me again, with it starting good and then just suddenly wont start and run nicely. Do you think I should get a new circuit breaker, I can get a V-Twin Manual Advance Ignition Distributors for 1947-1952 E & EL, 1947-1964 F & FL Models (781182) from my parts dealer, are these a good make, and would they fit my Panhead? Please keep doing the videos, as I love watching all of them, and learning about your old Harley's.
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 года назад
Well, I can try. We might do this back and forth a few times. That's okay. It's only because I can't see it from here. A 64 FL came with a dual point circuit breaker. They are a bit complicated o tune and you'll need to follow the service manual to the letter, if that's the case. Usually, someone has changed them to an earlier single point system. If so tune according to the book but make sure you're timing off of the right mark on the flywheel (Front cylinder advance timing mark) and that your front piston is on the compression stroke. If you still have the original dual point system, it's very common to have one of the coils fail, or a condenser, or one of the sets of points. If you have a single point circuit breaker, is it manual or automatic advance? If it it manual, not so much to check out. If it is automatic advance, check out advance weights and springs. Lube them with antisieze. We need to do some careful identifications here. Look it over and write back. A 64 FL is quite a prize.
@devimead750
@devimead750 2 года назад
@@pacificmike9501 Thanks, Mike, for replying, as you say it’s been changed at some time to a manual single points circuit breaker. From what I have learnt, the twin points circuit breaker was a bad idea, so most owners changed it. I got a lot of spares with the bike but the old type twin points circuit breaker wasn’t with it. And that’s my problem I don’t know if the circuit breaker that’s on the bike is a Harley one or an aftermarket quality make. When I first got the bike, I changed it to a Samwel Supplies electronic ignition system as I have never liked points ignition, and it ran great. But even with the electronic system after a while it ran great one minute and then refused to start the next. And that’s what I can’t understand, why does it keeps starting and running perfectly and then for no reason it all just won’t start easily or run properly. It’s been timed numerous times, runs perfectly and then seems for no reason at all, to refuse to start and run nicely, that’s why I’m wondering if the timing can slip and if the distributor is of a bad aftermarket brand or just worn out. So, as I said before, I thought it may be best to start from scratch and get a new circuit breaker, like a V-Twin manual advance ignition distributor, do you think that would be a good idea? Thanks for your time, Mike, and I do love the bike and many of my biking friends love it too, I just want it to be a reliable and fun bike to ride.
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 года назад
That bike should be easy. Original Harley manual single point distributor? Get into it. Love it. Just make sure it's not shorting out. Make sure insulator is working. Make sure plugs and plug wires are good. Use appropriate plug wires for ignition system, good copper wires for points, resistance wires for electronic. Use resistance plugs and proper coil and plug wires for electronics. Use proper coil for points. If plugs are fouling, probably too rich. Lean it out. Use fresh clean plugs. If one plug is light and one dark, vacuum leak, usually at manifold. We'll stay at it for a bit. You'll win.

Working g on a 1974 iron head sportster , just did a rebuild on the bendix zenith carburetor and have a question. The bike starts good, idles OK, and even rives up just fine. Now as I'm actually riding the bike throttling up and changing gears, the bike loads up and acts like it's getting too much fuel . After a trip through town I pulled the plugs to check them and found they were blacked with carbon, not wet, but dry and lots of carbon, your suggestions????,
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 года назад
If they match, you just need to lean it out. Not an easy carb to adjust. If you're flooding it with the accelerator pump, there are different holes in the pump shaft to give less movement. If you're getting too much fuel from the mainjet, there is an adjustable mainjet available from most of the aftermarket suppliers. V-Twin (Tedd Cycle) probably still stocks mainjets for that carb. If the plugs don't match, one dark one light, you have a vacuum leak, either the manifold or the throttle shaft where it passes through the body. Not so easy to fix if it is a vacuum leak at the throttle body. Custom bushings would have to be made and the throttle shaft replaced.
