A clip from Babylon 5 episode s04e22 "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars" "Not propaganda. Goodfacts. As opposed to realfacts. Facts the government has endorsed."
Good old Babylon 5, oh boy am I glad to see a fresh comment. I miss the show, tears start running when I think about the show and all of the actors/staff who died and went beyond the Rim ... Sinclair, Garibaldi, Franklin, Zak ... and the list will just go on .... Hope you had an amazing New Year, friend! In Valens name!
That's not exactly true. You have to consider that some of these folks are young so they may only be referencing the events of their time without realizing there is a broader history at play.
@Jeremiah Boyd No, this portrayal would be Fox News. Hence the Trumpian phrase of "alternative facts." Just because you are brainwashed does change the analogy.
Anyone else notice from the moment he appeared Garibaldi was looking around with a "What the hell is this?" look on his face? The problem with recreating a man like Garibaldi is that you GET a man like Garibaldi!
Babylon 5 was not "prophetic" - it was just a study of history. The concept of governments "altering" the truth to reflect policy or agenda is neither new nor extreme. Every corrupt government has done it, as far back as the Roman Empire, and probably before them even. If anything, Babylon 5 is a great example of why it's important to teach children history.... because history always repeats itself.
history does in certain ways repeat itself but babylon 5 hit the nail firmly on the head in our lifetime things have changed, certain things are going on that mirror perfectly what happened on the show
Right, it was no more prophetic than when The Doctor, in the 70's, said, "You know the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit the views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering."
it wasn't silly, they punctured the "good facts" of the post war consensus. I mean really, the presumptions are preposterous, diversity is inequality by definition is just the start of it.
@@turkeyspoony also, his "room to expand" is a parallel to Hitlers idea about living space, which basically meant getting rid of non "Aryans" out of eastern Europe, particularly Slavic peoples, so these guys were, in addition to being Orwellian Truthers, were Nazi-ish.
I used to think things like that "SS" logo were too heavy handed in associating characters like this with fascism and the Nazis. Now I realize it's not only realistic, but too subtle. These guys would be hanging up Swastikas.
When the truth comes out that the 2016 election was stolen, and they find a way to solve this mess, make Straczynski head of a council to help the United States, and in fact, the whole world, heal from the whole trauma. P. S. Orwell was the first to predict what you call (shudder) alternative facts.
@@Tripp1993 The 2016 election was not stolen. You've been brainwashed by the propagandists in the main stream media to think it was. Donald Trump is not the enemy. He won the election fair and square by the rules set down in the U.S. Constitution. The propagandists in the media have been working overtime since the election to delegitimize his win, and it's been causing serious problems in our country. Stop listening to their common refrain and start listening to another side like #walkaway or the Amazing Lucas here on RU-vid.
pspicer777 No, they just remembered WWII or Orwell’s novels. The specific wording changes, but corrupt governments have always been fond of euphemisms for their propaganda-the word “propaganda” itself is a euphemism, literally meaning “[information] which ought to be propagated”
@@greggoat6570 Because there are people who still unironically believe in those "alternative facts" despite being refuted time and time again, simply because to admit otherwise would be to admit that the man they hyped up as their savior was nothing more than a con artist.
"We have lost our uniqueness - we have been polluted by too many ideas. " ... An interesting way of describing both a lack of adaptation, and the fantasy of not changing (to an external culture or p/o/v.".
xoiskin1969x Those anchors are relatively consistent. It’s the anchors of any leftist station that twist facts to their narrative. From 8 months of “peaceful protests” and cops being bad as the left burned cities and slaughtered dozens, to suddenly being the champion of law and order the one day it got them power. From decrying corporations’ involvement in politics, to cheering because you think the corporations are on your side. Your side literally tried to rewrite math because it was too “white”. You are nothing but racist bigots without principle or truth.
And the hits keep coming - yesterday Websters online dictionary updated the definition of “preference” in reaction to new political talking points. The more things change the more they stay the same. Paper has a significant advantage here - they can’t just modify it on a whim. Glad I have B5 on physical media.
@@1982Obsidian I didn't search for it, surprisingly it was in my RU-vid recommendations. I watched it earlier and then days later the Websters thing happened and it was unbelievably on the nose. We have a large swath of people who think 1984 was an instruction manual instead of a cautionary tale - that's what's really scary.
Still an amazing piece of character storytelling. Even though they are holograms, Sheridan and company immediately saw thorugh the BS that the New Earth Government was trying to put out.
And its atemporal.. when the episodes where the night watch began to arrest people for criticing the goverment and that "peace officer" woman had that conversation with Sheridan about Earth not having any trouble "only isolated incidents, and some antipatriotic and traitor folks" someone asked him if he based that on Nazi germany and he said you didnt need to go any far to see that
Attempting to delegitimise a political entity by "deconstructing" historical figures associated with it? JMS really did predict modern progressivism, didn't he?
This sequence always made me feel queasy... And with the idea of 'alternative facts' actually taking hold in the mainstream consciousness... I'm vomitting hourly.
Kind of scary how that man-child and his administration say so much shit that people basically shrug and go "whatever". The outrageous and shocking is the new norm.
@@Ragitsu Probably because Trump doesn't actually say half the crap you *think* he does. Totally a man-baby, but not so much on the genocidal dictator front. All that dude's going to do is use the presidency to make boatloads of money then sod off with his pension. The real crazy stuff is how the media can just make stuff up and people buy it without question because it's backing their side. This applies to democrats and republicans. Thinking about it, this isn't an Orwellian nightmare, but rather another fairly prophetic but far less known source. With Obama & Trump, we've been given a lot of baseless doomsaying which not only serve as distractions from the bad stuff they're actually doing, but make people more jaded about accusations against the leaders. By the time we get a real dictator, the people will be far too jaded to take it seriously.
@@InfernosReaper He's not a genocidal dictator but its a statistical fact that more of Trumps statements are wrong compared to his peers when you check factchecking sites. So they are either outright lies or things he was mistaken upon. And everybody just believes his falsehoods.
And what nonsense is that ? I seem to remember a caravan of people heading for the border to overrun it !! Then nothing , I seem to remember , having evidence that a former president spied on somebody , where was that evidence ? I seem to remember having proof of something on a drive , what happened to that ? You used the media to spread your fear , yet when push to show your evidence you have none , then you say its fake news !!!
Of course he does. He is basically doing a documentary. Or maybe a sales pitch, to get serious resources? In any case, he is persistently adressing the Audience since his first words.
@@christopherg2347 Yes. I think it was supposed to be a demonstration for the powers that be of how the technology could be used to create their propaganda. Kind of scary when you think of the fears of deepfakes right now.
Everyone thinks their side (political, religious, ideological) contains most of the facts, while the other side(s) cling to superstition, falsehoods, and dogma.
Christopher G What a lovely straw man. How about “why did you tell a lie to send poll watchers home”? “Why did four swing states all supposedly stop counting at the same time and all come back with vote dumps 99%+ for Biden”? Why did counties in Georgia suddenly become bluer than LA? And, of course, “if you have nothing to hide, why are you refusing to allow any investigations or audits?”
When one side denies verifiable facts and evidence, substituting positions supported only by emotion and wishful thinking, that side loses all credibility.
In order to make this work, you have to convince people about the goodfacts being realfacts, and make up badfacts while presenting them as goodfacts from the enemy. Then you have your goodfact seen as realfact, and you also have goodfacts from the enemy as contrast seen as not being real. In worst case your government present the realfacts coming from the enemy as just being goodfacts in order to dismiss them for political reasons. I mean, politically, a presented realfact is nothing else than a preferred goodfact in most cases.
So cute how you project! If only the damn backwards US were like Britain, where anyone who voices an unapproved opinion will be met with the full power of the state! It's all those damn guns the people have that keep us from knowing our place! A civilized society is a compliant and disarmed society that believes and obeys the government!
It is funny - rather than cute - how all those guns owned by the civilian population of the United States of America haven't done much to push back against the horrible policies of their own government. The gun nuts talk a big game, but that's all it is...talk.
Reverse correct=opposite of correct=untrue Infospeak=propaganda In short, a euphemism for lies. Please read 1984. You will understand a lot more about things if you do. This episode is a mix of Nazism and 1984 reimagined in the B5 setting.
@@GayLPer Fox News Channel first launched on October 7, 1996. The first episode of Babylon 5 premiered on January 26, 1994. The first episode that introduced us to ISN (or at least have someone on B5 from that fictional news channel) was the fourth episode of Season 1, "Infection" which aired on February 16, 1994. So how in the world could a real-world news channel be the inspiration of a fictional one when the fictional one predates the real-world one by nearly three years? 🤔
I´m impressive with this show every time, seem´s brazilian Lula da Silva´s party watch the entire 5 seasons and decide to go with the Shadows. This clip is exactly what it is happening with the brazilian justicial system. But the word is not facts it is "resignifying things"
Said by those who burned cities over a lie during the height of a pandemic. Irregularities? Only people who are bad people question the system, in fact its not allowed on here just as it should be. Woke Hedge fund managers and their wallstreet toadies did nothing wrong, only someone backing orange man would question the systems integrity.
@@thorable530 Those backing orange man only questioned the system's integrity when it was no longer to their advantage. As long as they were winning it was "law and order," when it looked like they'd lose it became "disbelieve and defy." Those who questioned the system under orange man did so long before he took power.
Understanding is a three-edged sword. Your side, their side and the truth. Without any understanding of "their side" you are never quite likely to shine a light on the truth. If you only have one narrative and you don't understand your counterparts, you are likely blind and ignorant. And the irony here is that those of you who do not know what you do not know are doomed to believe I am talking about the other side. Whereas those of you who do know what you do not know will know I am talking about the other side. And both sides will express it isn't them. Celestial levels of irony here.
It goes back and forth. Right now with the stranglehold on media and culture, it's definitely the left who's doing most of it. But give it enough time and the right will have their turn on the swings.
@@613harbinger316 you just view it that way because you don't view the side you agree with as propaganda. Perception is a powerful tool depending on your beliefs. The lines between fact and fiction can get pretty blurred when out human emotions get involved.
There are many verifiable facts and evidence which only one side is deliberately denying, substituting positions based solely on emotion and wishful thinking. No side is guiltless, but treating them as equivalent just makes it easier for us all to walk down the fascist road, yet again.
This sounds so current it's frightening, J. Michael Straczynski was an absolute prophet. he predicted the whole facts vs Feelings mindset currently on display in the woke movement right now. It is frightening how much this man got right, the predictions and the real outcomes he saw and put into this masterpiece of a series
The Woke Movement is not the problem. The woke people are the ones who are aware of injustice -- preferably by having had a good history education and not sleeping through it, but if you can't get that, then being observant and thinking critically (which you would need to make good use of the history education anyway) will have to do.
@@Lucius_Chiaraviglio The ironic thing is that by blaming the "woke movement" they're actually engaging in the very farce they accuse the "woke movement" of being.
This show just proves fascists and authoritarian figures have no original ideas and use the same tactics, its why it seems eerily similar to what's happening for the last 5 years in America but in reality B5 is based on the events of Nazi Germany. This show even laments this, because in B5 they toppled a fascist regime but hundreds of years into the future more arise to take their place and are making the same mistake again. They might tone down the imagery or attempt to appear less radical to detract from being compared to their predecessors but I assure you its the same shit every time.
@@danieldickson8591 Not a slogan. A rallying cry. A call to action. We don't need new ideas; we simply need to get back to the foundations that our forebears laid out. The puppet-masters controlling Biden have a plan to destroy this nation. We say no...........................
I would guess it's because you don't know what CRT and Socialism actually are. Not what the politicians and pundits say they are, what their principles and priorities really are.

@@danieldickson8591 tbh it sounds more like right wing rethoric to anything remotely foreign. Border talk and threats from abroad. But it is also on the more extreme side of it. More proud boys then republicans.
The people desperately trying to tie this to their own personal political rivalries are kinda hilarious. Fellas, everyone in power does that. And if someone in power doesn't do that, then that means they're too stupid or lack resources to do that, and they'll likely be out of power very soon.
No, good people in power can exist. This is just what the bad politicians want you to think. So that when something bad comes out about them, it seems less shocking because people say "Well, they're all just as bad." It's a subtle trick to mold your thinking that way which allows them to get away with corruption.
Saying it's common or ageless is one thing, you are not incorrect, but the absolute STATE of BOLD FACED LIES told by the mainstream media on behalf of their puppet-masters, and people being too docile / stupid to question the narrative. If you do not think it is worse right now, with the current reach and influence of modern communication such as social-media and the Internet, combined with peoples wilful ignorance, we're at a turning point as to whether the global populace accept comfort and ignorance, vs effort and enlightenment.
The saddest part is that the human race has been down this path so many times, including recent history, that it should be obvious, yet it still works. And Sulfur, we can't lose sight of the fundamental difference between lying when necessary for the greater good, and lying when convenient for the good of yourself.
