“No greater love hath a man than he lay down his life for his brother. Not for millions, not for glory, not for fame. For one person, in the dark where no one will ever know or see.”
eastwing329 Ivonava showed true emotion and Claudia Christian was so good in this scene. And it was so sad that Marcus sacrificed himself for her because he loved her so much.
I was so sorry when Marcus killed himself to save Ivanova...he might have been my favourite human character. But, it was SO incredibly noble and so 'Marcus' - it was also a perfect ending for him. And the scene above where Ivanova cries for her loss/his death...what a wonderfully written and astoundingly acted scene. Claudia Christian was SO perfect in it. It was almost like all the emotion her character could not show on the show up until then was channeled into this one scene. Yet she still did not go too far...just perfect.
He didn’t die in the novels he’s revived some time I think a few centuries later he’s told what happened they find a hair of hers on him and make a clone and then ends up on a paradise planet with the clone of her pretending that their was no chance of rescue
The scene where Susan is sharing her regrets with Dr. Franklin about not returning any love to dear dead loyal Marcus gets me every time. One of the most poignant scenes in any kind of show.
Ivanova had a life that hardened her and closed her from trusting someone.....her father who did not love her coping with the death of his wife from a telepathy-inhibiting drug and the death of her brother which promted him to disapprove of his daughters decision to join Earth Forces. Ivanova's former lover ended up being a xenophobe, Talia as a telepath died as a personality since she was experimented on to serve as an unwitting sleeper agent. She handled many years of stress like rebellion against earth. This left her internall vulnerable and she shielded herself against emotions entirely. This is very human.....not everybody deals with emotions this way.
Claudia Christian should have won an Oscar for this shit. Amazing acting, so incredibly sad. B5, at it's best kicked all other sci-fi out of the park because it was about real people, suffering. I cry every time I watch this.
There are two scenes in all of Babylon 5 which appear to be honest and natural and no trace of acting: this one and the one where Ivanova sits Shiva for her father. There's many great scenes in the show, but I don't think, from an acting standpoint, anything else in the series comes close to this. If I ever get to meet Claudia at a convention, I intend to ask her about this performance, and where she had to go in order to do this.
*Emmy - Oscars are for movies. But I do feel like B5 always received way less attention than it should have, especially given that it was the prototype for arc-based TV series that have now become the norm in television.
@@roguishpaladin not the prototype for arc based story telling. As JMS has explained in some interviews, the long story arc format was new to American sci-fi but was already well established in other countries, such as with the UK's Doctor Who and Blake's 7.
No matter how many times I've watched the segment at the end, it always makes me cry. When I saw it the first time, I had to stop the tape to compose myself. *Claudia* should have gotten an *_Emmy_* or a *_Golden Globe_* for her performance.
Giving his life for hers was the only thing he could do, he couldn't risk the others saying no, trying to stop him, relying on them with time slipping away so fast. The best way for a ranger to die, for the one (he loved).
Their story, one of loving without expectation, loving sincerely, genuinely, is one of the most powerful expressions of it, I have seen in sci-fi. In the 90's we had a lot of great science fiction, and I fall back to the Deep Space Nine/Babylon 5 era. Their stories were that good. This one, is at the very top of that list. Bravo for all of the players in these scenes, some are not here anymore, but this here is a testament of what love, should be... Without expectation...and unconditional.
May Marcus find the peace in death that he never found in life. This show was all about legends...light against the dark... I cannot think of a better way to go out than to go out in than saving the one you love bringing just 1 moment of peace to your own restless conscious before you find another type of peace.
A strong reminder to us all: try to be open to all possibilities for love. You won't know until its too late when a chance for love and happiness has past you by because you were closed to the idea. Ask me how I know. Fantastic scene from a fantastic program. No CGI. No explosions. No grand armies fighting each other. Just great concepts, great writing, and great acting.
This scene still gets to me 5 years after watching it for the first time. So poignant. Marcus's line about the bed is soo sad and helpless, all he could do.
This truly went to the power of her character that she went from anger regret sorrow and then in all the tears and agony to humor with she could have at least boffed him I was in tears during this episode and the end of the last and when she said that I just died laughing truly she deserved an award for this scene if not the rest of her amazing time on b5
Marcus' body is frozen & in 500 years he is revived & he clones a strand of her hair found on his person. He then downloads the recored and stored memories of Ivanova into the clone and they live happily ever after. It's in a short story written by JMS. He wanted to give Marcus & Ivanova the happy ending the fans felt they deserved. Drew Iron Tears down Great Pluto's Cheek. He made Hell grand what love did seek.
@@SantomPh It''s 300 years later. So 200 years before the Great Burn. Also, he crashes them on another planet with (I presume) no intelligent life intending they live out the rest of their lives on a beach together. I can only hope he gave himself a vasectomy before doing this because two people aren't enough to breed a new colony of humans and it wouldn't be fair to their children.
10:30 to 10:50, possibly the most heartbreaking realization one human can have about another. I am convinced that there are real relationships that have sundered because of things like this.
If the Emmys weren't so snobby towards sci-fi/fantasy shows, I'd say Claudia Christian deserved one for her rather heartbreaking talk with Franklin. And it's funny, at Dragon*Con a few years back, Jason mentioned that he found it odd that he was rushing off to do this for Susan, but why the heck did he have to knock all the guards out? JMS has said that he might have kept Jason on the show had he known Claudia wasn't coming back. I ALWAYS wondered why nobody thought to possibly ask as much of the crew as possible to "donate" some of their life to save her, negating having Marcus give up his life entirely. Hmmm....fanfic idea coming up....
+ladycplum I commented on another Babylon 5 video here on RU-vid that the Arthurian legends were clearly an influence on several episodes of Babylon 5 (the most obvious, of course, being "A Late Delivery From Avalon"). I think Marcus Cole was another manifestation of this because he embodies many of the characteristics (courage, nobility, intelligence, generosity, etc.) of the quintessential medieval knight all the way up to his chastity, his unrequited love for and faithfulness to Ivanova, and his willingnes to sacrifice his life for hers. The writers even gave him a line in "Late Delivery From Avalon" in which Marcus rather jokingly compares himself to Sir Galahad...but the similarity is actually remarkably apt.
I've never heard that from JMS. The Lurkers Guide has season 4 filming completed before JMS knew that CC was leaving. The only thing that had to be changed was one line in the voiceover about Ivanova taking command of the new ship.
Device was not set up to allow more than 1 "donor" and it works by taking on the illness or injury you're trying to heal. You can't break your neck just a little bit. Believe me, if Franklin and Sheridan had thought that that was possible they wouldn't have banned the thing.
The question of the security guards is answered easily. They most surely tried to stop Marcus from getting his hands on the device (since it was restricted, after all).
Probably one of my he saddest yet truly amazing moments in sci fi history Marcus held true to his love and his oath as a ranger he honored his duty and love to bad more people weren’t like that the world would be a better place
He held true to his oath? He deserted his post in time of battle. And took the ship with him. Marcus put his heart above his duty and responsibility as a Ranger. As was said in Season 5... "He joined the Anla'shok for the wrong reasons. Because of guilt over the death of his brother. He wasn't looking for a way to serve. He was seeking a way to atone. Perhaps the saddest love story in all of literature. Marcus was such a wonderful character. I was sad to see him go. I really wanted to see Susan and him to get together.
Man the last time I sae this scene wss back in the nineties. Still breaks my heart. Marcus and Suzan. The promise of their lives together was so glorious, we were looking forward to when they would finally get together. And then this. See, THIS is good writing. And fenomenal acting!
He didn't die. In the ending credits of the last episode we see the characters as they were early in the series and how they were at the end. For Marcus there's some kind of cerificate which you might assume is a death certificate. But if you look close you realize it isn't. It's a certificate of cryogenic suspension. If you want to know what happened next, JMS wrote a short story called "Space, Time and the Incurable Romantic".
Amazing scene. And she was so amazing in it. I always thought she was a bit miscast. I saw other things this actress did and she played REALLY emotional SO well. But this role kept her buttoned down. She did well with what she had. But it is too bad she was not given more heavy scenes like this...for I think there lay her true talent as an actress.
That was the character. And I think she did a great job with it, especially BECAUSE she was normally so emotional in her scenes. This gave her a chance to be the cool, collected character. And that made this emotional scene SO MUCH MORE PAINFUL to watch, because Ivanova DIDN'T do that. So when she finally did, it hurt.
In my experience, there has been two BRILLIANTLY ACTED AND WRITTEN SERIES I have loved: B5 and The West Wing. I feel honoured to have witnessed them both in my life...
Goodness is not goodness that seeks advantage. Good is good in the final hour, in the deepest pit, without hope, without witness, without reward. Virtue is only virtue in extremis.
*¡Claudia Christian was born Claudia Ann Coghlan on Tuesday, 10 August 1965!* 11:41 am Pacific Daylight Savings Time on Tuesday, 19 October 2021 Common Era or CE formerly known as Ano Domini or AD
I missed the episode before this when it first aired. I went from Sheridan being rescued from capture and tortune and the cliffhanger on attacking Earth and Susan paralyzed on a death bed to this scene. I was lost and it still wrecked me.
"The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace." - Numbers 6:24-26 - KJV.
After watching this, please read "Space, Time, and the Incurable Romantic" shot story written by J. Michael Straczynski himself. You will find out that there is happy ending for Marcus and Ivanova after all.
Alexander Benkendorf If somebody else had written it, I would have agreed with you. However, since it was written by J Michael Straczynski himself, and for B5, I don't agree.
Very sweet. However, the best Interaction, is between Delen and G'gar, over the Minbari Wars. Still makes me cry, as it was an honest response to real life, Babylon 5, way a Grown up Story
I wish JMS instead of writing a short story set 500years in the future. JMS wrote a story about Ivanva searching for a way to revive Marcus; make that one of Ivanvas life long goals after Marcus is put in Cryostatis
6:52 - To Think that Claudia was nominated for a Saturn Award for her work on Season 4 of Babylon 5, it sad that this scene of Ivanova and Franklin discussing the death of Marcus, stating that she knew how much he loved her, wasn't enough to help her win... there needs to be a Award Given Just for this moment alone
This scene and the one with Delenn and G'Kar in Delenn's quarters are the two most sadest scenes in B5. The two actress should have won emmies for those scenes. I miss B5.😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Bruce L. Phillis I agree that they should have won emmies for their acting. The dinner scene and the goodbye in the last episode are much sadder though.
You missed one of the best bits where she repeats what he had said earlier, explains she has a great memory and then states, since she knows (some) Minbari, she thanks him for the "greeting"
Every time I view the screen of Ivanovo crying about death Marcus, I cry. I am 73 years old. Do let the lord governments take you to war, War is for profit and YOU do not profit! If politicians can not tell you WHY, politicians has FAILED his/her elected job
Her is where I fall in the chain of command. That poster is something. Or how about when she finds out the meaning of the mimbari he spoke. Or tells a mimbari to speed the word not to laugh at her self taught mimbari.
And the brilliance of writing where right in the middle of a heart-wrenching scene they could toss in the humorous line "...at least I should have boffed him just once..." Any less of a writer or actor that would have killed the whole scene.
A part of me thought Marcus was overdoing it with the machine and he should have set it so that Ivanova would survive and but not completely healed and they would heal her slowly with the machine over time. The setting isn't just instantly death to heal.
perfect and classic case of unrequited love..but you had the music too loud it's hard to hear Susan talk when she's crying and talking to the Doc 2022 watching this again...there is no way the "remake" is going to be even a fraction as good as this........oh yeah sure the graphics will be outstanding....the special effects stupendous......but that's all, it will not touch the perfect storm that was this show
Why was Marcus always so criptic around Ivanova? He should have just come right out and told her how felt. Maybe if she know wouldn't end up sacrificing himself save her.
