Babylon 5 Remastered - G'Kar explains the vast, timeless things near Sigma 957

G'Kar : How would it explain? There are things in the universe billions of years older than either of our races. They're vast, timeless, and if they're aware of us at all, it is as little more than ants, and we have as much chance of communicating with them as an ant has with us. We know, we've tried, and we've learned that we can either stay out from underfoot or be stepped on.
Sakai : That's it? That's all you know?
G'Kar : Yes, they are a mystery. And I am both terrified and reassured to know that there are still wonders in the universe, that we have not yet explained everything. Whatever they are, Miss Sakai, they walk near Sigma 957, and they must walk there alone.

A true actor can take you anywhere they want to with only their voice. Take away the spfx, music, sets, costumes, and what is left is the writing and the actors voice. Andreas was an amazing actor.

100% correct. Sadly, the actress in this scene was not up to par, in this scene and others. That was B5's greatest weakness compared to Star Trek. I was never quite sure if the bit actors were just that bad (show couldn't afford better), the writing was bad for them, or if the good actors elevated the occasional bad writing/dialogue. Another of the universe's mysteries....

@@Mxyzptlksac We'll just have to agree about the show and Andreas. I thought she was unconvincing nearly all the time. Like I said, the show was full of them. IMO. But take Michael O'Hare. He got lots of flak for being a lousy actor. And while I get that, I find that the more times I watch him, the better he seems, more powerful. Esp in contrast to Boxleitner, who was great, but a different style of acting.

Andreas was typecast as villains, because of his appearance; so, it wasn't surprising that he was playing the villain, in the B5 pilot movie and early 1st season. Then, JMS demonstrated he knew what he was doing by casting him as this particular character. The man was a terrific actor and some of his speeches rival the best of Shakespeare or history, as delivered through his performances. His speech when forcibly dismissed from the Advisory Council, after the Centauri conquer Narn is riveting and carries the voices of everyone who stood up to fascist tyrants.

JMS had a habit of hiring typecast people. Some people thought it wouldn't be a good thing to have Walter Koenig on this very episode because he never seemed to display much range, mainly being used as comic relief when he played Checkov in Star Trek. So JMS cast him as Bester and gave us one of the villains of all time.

The true beauty of Babylon 5 is wrapped up in this scene. The foreshadowing that ran so strongly through Season 1 [in particular] took it to levels TV sci-fi had never even dared to dream of. Who would have guessed from such a brief encounter that we had just met one of the mightiest of the First Ones [The Walkers of Sigma 957] who would have such a pivotal role to play in an epoch ending and galaxy delivering battle several seasons later? Of course season one also gave us the beginning of the 'great triumvirate' of stories that to me are Babylon 5's crowning glory in story telling- Babylon Squared, War Without End parts 1 and 2, and The Fall of Centauri Prime.

Responding to your year a ago post-- It was the story lines that spanned multiple seasons that made the show so epic. The little things that did not seem relevant at the time only to be immensely relevant or "Oh my god" moments in later seasons. The way characters grew and changed. The show was amazing and I do not think it could be made today. Today they try to "modernize" our fantasy and Science Fiction and this removes the timeless aspect of it. Cheapens it to sell a point relevant only for this moment. But we have this to watch again and again, I am thankful for that.

It's interesting to note that in the Battle of the Light, there is still only one ship flown by the Walkers of Sigma. Here you can see part of one of the "trap doors" that J. Michael Straczynski wrote into the show to handle unplanned actor exits. He very astutely foresaw that over a planned five-year series, actors might unexpectedly become unavailable, and he pre-planned possible replacements, and explanations to account for them. Catherine Sakai was meant to play the same part in the story that ended up being played by Anna Sheridan: the explorer who went to the Shadows' homeworld of Zha Ha Dum, and got captured and brainwashed into becoming one of their agents. Sakai would have lured Jeffrey Sinclair to that planet, as Anna Sheridan ultimately did to John Sheridan, had Michael O'Hare's worsening mental illness not necessitated his replacement as the show's lead character. As it was, when Bruce Boxleitner was brought in to replace O'Hare, there wasn't time to start over from square one building up Anna Sheridan to the point where she would disappear (only to reappear as a Shadow agent later), so they introduced Boxleitner's John Sheridan, with his wife having _already_ been lost on an exploration mission and presumed dead. The other trapdoor he had to use was the one needed to replace Andrea Thompson as Talia Winters with Lyta Alexander, when Thompson demanded more money and more screen time. He needed a telepath who had been powered up to unprecedented strength. Winters had been boosted by Jason Ironheart, who had gained near-godlike abilities from a Psi Corps experiment. That explanation couldn't be used a second time, so Alexander was given a backstory that had her spend time with the Vorlons, and have her abilities boosted by them.
@WesternActor
@WesternActor 2 года назад
A few quick comments about this… First, Catherine Sakai was already a trap door of sorts for Carolyn Sikes, who was Sinclair’s girlfriend in the pilot and originally would have fulfilled a role similar to the one later slated for Catherine and Anna Sheridan. But there is some question about exactly how similar Catherine’s and Anna’s fates would have been had the former stuck around. In his original “plot synopsis” for the show (included in the 15th Babylon 5 script book), JMS described Catherine as being mind-wiped, similar to what happened to Karl Mueller in “The Quality of Mercy” and Charles Dexter/Brother Edward and “Brother Malcolm” in “Passing Through Gethsemane.” Whether this would have been as a result of Shadow interference or something else is something JMS has never been specified, but this, coupled with what (very) little we know about what would have gone down with Carolyn had that character remained in the show, gives us at least some reason to believe that all the COs’ SOs would not have met identical fates. Finally, Talia herself was a trap door for Lyta Alexander! Patricia Tallman didn’t move from the pilot to the main series for what sounds like a series of miscommunications and problems behind the scenes, so the telepath role was reconfigured somewhat so Talia could get to the same place JMS needed her to be. (Note, too, that if you switch up the vowel sounds a little, “Tlya” and “Lyta” are more or less anagrams of each other.) So when Andrea Thompson left and Tallman came back, JMS had to re-pull some of the original strings and, I suspect, change a few things to get Lyta back where she always should have been.

The role of G'Kar, however, he was fantastic, simply unerringly fantastic. I've heard rumors of people wanting to redo Babylon 5, new sets, actors and so on! NO, adamantly NO! No one could play his role, and as for Mira Furlan, Claudia Christian, Jerry Doyle, Peter Jurasik, and Bruce Boxleitner just to list a few. In no way could other actors give this series the heart and atmosphere if you will, that they did. Such things are like magic. It cannot simply be willed to happen. If you know, you know.

This scene is one of the reasons why B5 was so good. The explanation that you cant explain everything.

this scene made me feel small. And I mean that in the best possible way. We're constantly told how big space is (and as a lifelong Star Trek fan, heard that many times), and yet... this scene was what made me truly *feel* it.

You can see in this scene that looks like a one off and unsuspicious, JMS is setting up the story for Commander Sinclair's partner goofing around in places she shouldn't be and getting into trouble. She was supposed to what Sheridan's wife ended up being. But due to Michael O'Hare's issue, they couldn't pursue it. So when they brought in Captain Sheridan, we are already past s1 where the base characters are polished and they didn't had another season to build his partner's character up from the ground up. So JMS introduced him as a widower who later learns about his wife's involvement with the shadows and retconning the First ones in Sigma 957 as allies rather than enemies. This is peak writing and story telling. A retcon so smooth you barely knew it.

Katsulas and Jurasik got a great workout from carrying that show for five years. (I kid, I kid, so many others were great too... but they did seem to get half of all the shows best writing between them.)

Andreas Katsulas is one of the greatest losses to acting ever... every scene with G'kar enlightened and uplifted me as a person in ways I can't describe, even when he was the bad guy... if any actor deserved immortality it was Andreas Katsulas so he could play the roles of G'kar and Tomalak (ST:TNG) forever... This season 1 scene alone is proof, even when G'Kar was a spoiled little a$$hole, that Andreas Katsulas is a singular burning light to acting that can never be replaced. I mean watch this scene and if by the end of it you don't feel humbled and enlightened then there's something seriously wrong with you as a human being, in my humble opinion. I swear even if Star Trek Picard had butchered his character if Andreas Katsulas had been in season 1 of Star Trek Picard as a Frenemy to Jean-luc the season would have actual been worthy of praise rather than apologizing for. RIP Andreas Katsulas... hope we meet beyond the rim... its one of my greatest regrets we didn't meeting on this side of the rim... goodbye and thank you for characters that can never be matched or replaced.

Indeed. I wish that Tomalak had even half the lines that G'Kar spoke. Would have made him quite the adversary for the TNG crew. And would have taken the Romulans back to their TOS roots as Romans in Space.
