In this scene taken from Babylon 5 season 4 episode 15, Sheridan delivers a speech before the first battle head-on with Earth Alliance ships. Property of Warner Bros. Created by J. Michael Straczynski
Pilots: *grouped up in their own individual conversations* Ivonava: CAPTAIN ON DECK! Pilots: *fall into formation and stand at attention* Sheridan: As you were. Pilots: *return to their original groupings and go back to their conversations* Sheridan: I gave the wrong command, didn't I? Ivonava: Pretty sure you were thinking of "At ease", Captain.
Babylon 5's universe was dark, much darker than Star Trek's, but it was an awfully good series. I always prefer Star Trek's universe since it is more optimistic, but Babylon's 5 universe is one that may become reality. The remake of Battlestar Gallitica was the darkest Sci-Fi series ever on TV. Sheridan was right about what a soldier's duty is.
Yet at the core of Babylon 5 there was always hope, the bonds of comradeship, the desire to be better, to stand for ideals. The Galactica remake was weighed down with cynicism, guilt, and grief.
There is one absolute and unconditional truth in the universe, Babylon 5 is the greatest television show ever. By the way, I hate Sheldon s Cooper's guts because he said Babylon 5 was derivative..
I think they just had to pick a scifi show for Sheldon to shit on, for comedic purposes. They probably picked B5 at random. It's a damn shame. Especially considering their adoration of Star Trek. Don't get me wrong, Star Trek's fine, but Babylon 5 shits all over it.
Hardass?, The thing about Sheridan that made him one of the best characters in the show, is that whatever he asked of you, he made it sound kind, and good, leaving you no other option than to reply "Yes sir". That's what made him different from Sinclair that had about 0 personality and made most of the first season torture. Sheridan is tied with Jack O'neill in my favourite Sci-fi commanding officers. (O'Neill is there because he was frigging hilarious, specially when dealing with the villains)
@@manuelaparcedo417 To be fair the actor playing Sinclair was going through some real bad mental problems during Babylon 5. Michael O'Hare asked to keep it secret to protect his career, specifying to keep it secret until he died but afterwards allowed it to be discussed, so we only learned a few years ago that he was suffering paranoid delusions the whole time. Hard to act when you are seeing shit.
@@fieldy409 I can agree to that and I feel bad for the guy, he had some good moments, but for most of it his character was a bore, well acted, but no soul.
He had plenty of great moments. His scenes with Catherine Sakai, the entirety of 'And the Sky Full of Stars', his oh so many scenes with Garibaldi etc. Season 1 is my overall favourite primarily because of Sinclair. Season 3 and 4 have outstanding episodes, but also some real low points that hold it back for me.
Star trek when it first came out was needed, at that time the teenagers watching it had a few years before, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, been hiding under their desks at school in case the Russians Nuked the United States and in Russia the same thing was being repeated in their schools. Most people Believed the World would be a Dead Radioactive Planet in their lifetime, what made Star Trek special was it gave you hope in a time that had little. Babylon 5 was a more realistic vision of the future, we don't blow our planet up, but are just as Arrogance and agressive as ever, but it makes a point that learning not to Destroy ourselves despite how different and diverse we are, could be something worthwhile to offer to the older races who had lost their diversity long ago, becoming only one race and Religion in every Culture we encountered. It's the worst and best we are, a different way of looking at ourselves than in 1966, the story is all connected unlike star trek, it's a more sophisticated way of seeing ourselves than the Idealism of Star Trek or the Socal interactions of the next generation. Babylon 5 is my favorite for many reasons, these are some of them. As for Shelton on big bang theory, I've seen Trekkies in full uniform at Pizza hut for their weekly get together, how much more Nerdy can you get? At least now, their comunacators actually work! If I could actually live on Babylon 5, I would go in a heartbeat! Not a perfect world, but a very interesting one!
I would probably live on an O'Neil cylinder as well, and definitely on Babylon5. Also in Babylon5 we did nuke Earth to a radioactive waistland. Just a little later that's all.
@@55Quirll lol, only because I listen to Isaac Arthur. Which is sad. I grew up in Huntsville Al. There are pictures everywhere of space stations that Warner Vnbraun, god I misspelled that, envisioned. Too bad we never built anything like that. Maybe in 100 years or so, but I doubt it. We are all slaves to Wall Street, and there only interested in short term gain. Ironic that a form of business that was designed to offset the risk of exploration, and triad, is now preventing both in the name of short term profit. We need the Sadows now, there are to many ant hills that could use some remodeling.
@@sasquatchycowboy5585 I found a lot of pictures of them on the net and downloaded them to my computer. Yes Wener Van Braun was a big help in our space program. He is got a mention in the British movie 5 million years to earth. Based on a BBC TV series. I was hoping we would have stations like O'Niel up above earth but not as easy to control as the cities down here are. Take care and stay safe.
My god Babylon5 was so good. Like many I got into Jordan Pettersen a few years back. Just before his political scandal. It made me see B5 through an entirely different light. The struggle of order and chaos in all of us, and in society. The dangers of blind adherence to ideology. The need for courage to question authority. The cycle of retribution, and hate. And so much more. Its truely art. What an underrated masterpiece.
Sadly, our future is looking a lot more like Babylon5 in the time of Clark than the bright future of Star Trek. I hope we can change course in time. Straczynski had some crazy insight into the near future, at least.
Many of it is obvious in retrospect. Hindsight bias. Still, one can pull much from studying history. It tends to repeat itself every so often because human nature is rather slow to evolve and takes significant conscious effort to do so.
Clark becoming dictator seems a prophetic forecast of Trump, the wannabe Mussolini. And although Biden is now President, Trump and his followers are determined to get the Presidency back by any means, both legal and criminal.
Btw at this point of story these fighters already fought the Shadows even tho it's different story fighting your own people they still dealt w/much frighten power than the earth people ..
It wasn't about their firepower, it was about turning your arms against your own...those other ships probably had people they studied with in the military academy.
Thanks for someone who likes my comment this is a great TV show and for those who saw this TV show Babylon 5 had 2 wars 1 was the shadows and finally earth wow if you ask me that sounds like armageddon to me but Sheridan and the crew had succeeded with greater cost
There was just one war. Clark was the last standing pawn of the Shadows. The shadows manipulated Clark into power. All the wars were manipulations of the shadows. I suspect even the Narns declaring war against the Centeuri was through manipulations by the shadows.
My guess that would be it. If not for the Shadows and Mr. Morden, President Santigo would still be alive and in office. But then don't forget about Psy-Corps involvement in the whole matter, the Psy-Corp knew the Shadows were interested in some things. So Psy-Corp was interested. Clark made an alliance with the devil on both sides, no way he was getting out of this alive if he or any of his other pawns failed.
Wolfen443 The shadows were directly involved in backing Clark and the assassination provided the materials necessary and then backed him with advanced ships shadow technology that they built into their battleships
@@gregkelmis2435 What makes it worse is here Clark got assistance from the Shadows to gain power, and the first thing he does is institute a program of xenophobia, sowing distrust to any races not human. Served the Shadows' purpose so they didn't care, but still so hypocritical on his part.
You know what bothers me about this whole independence thing? the white star precipitated martial law and not one of Sheridans crew shown issue with that. They should have done something in the following episodes showing him introduce them to the White Star and the Shadows.
Kind of l looks like him at 0:22 but B5 is not in his filmography www.imdb.com/name/nm0872997/ Doesn't prove it's not him though since the part was so small maybe it didn't make the list.
B5 is much darker for the most part, dealing with a far greater and more formidable evil... DS9 had many enemies but most had redeeming qualities, you didn't get the sense of the good guys under siege from evil all the time, watching it again now you almost wonder was Trump taking tips from shows like this and house of cards
Thanks for someone who likes my comment and for those who don't know Babylon 5 get the complete series on DVD and you will understand how and why I said this show is off the chain
Why the fuck would anyone be comparing this with The Big Bang Theory with studio audience or whatever, signaling you when something is allegedly funny, never mind hilarious.🙄 2 completely different genres also. Like comparing night and day,man & women , human & lava.
While the strongest military female character was the second in command she was always respected by her captain as a capable individual . So... stop with the feminist BS that TV needs for strong females because TV and Movies have them for the last 30 years
Also Ivaonna and Kira on DS9 were not just strong women but also they did not have to prove their strength by saying men are worthless and stupid like in Supergirl and other shows.
@@KentoLeoDragon Absolutely. It is nuts. Speech writers ["of that organization"] and policy planners ["of that organization"] know how to polarize. A very sad state of affairs by some measure. Ignore the b/s and hypocrisy for what it is. Pure lies. Some writer inflates the lowest 1% of events, with no supporting evidence or proof. Same crap, different channel.
Ivanova, Delenn, Ripley, The Suns, Zhaan, Kira, Jadzia and Drumner.... All strong 3d characters without diminishing the male characters. All have real arcs, and all are believable - vulnerable as much as strong, just as the men in their shows. And now we have dren like discovery and captain marvel. We're going backwards.
@@KentoLeoDragon When people were arguing that young girls need a female doctor because they have no other heroes, I list at least 20 female characters who were hero, who were strong and who took no shit off anyone, who were intelligent. No one ever had a answer back because they knew I was right, there plenty of female heroes out there. They just wanted a female to take over the doctor to make a point.
