There is nothing odd or inexplicable happening here ( #notacult ), just Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday and being crucified by her two good friends while 8-9000 party guests jump up and down chanting "Death Death Death". Watch the intro again, the subtitles were explaining what was about to happen. That whole concert (Legend 1997 - Su-metal's 16th birthday celebration ... she was born in 1997, this was Dec 2013) was like a rock opera from start to finish and it was all about Suzuka Nakamoto transitioning and giving up her life and existence as a J-Pop Idol to be reborn as the Metal Goddess Su-metal, chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. The whole song is based on a pun. The English word death sounds to a Japanese speaker like the Japanese word desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means to be - as in I am, we are, it is etc. Basically the lyrics for this song are: "B_A_B_Y_M_E_T_A_L" ... "I am Su-metal", "I am Yuimetal", "I am Moametal" "We are BABYMETAL" ... "Death Death Death Death Death Death Death Death". This was the first song on the first album - what better way to introduce themselves? Usually it would be the first song of a concert - at Legend 1997 it was a special occasion, so they used it for the finale as Su completed her transition. The opening riff is an homage to Metallica's 'One', the statue crumbling is an homage to their Lady Justice statue from the Justice For All tour in 1989. The neck brace is an homage to X Japan's legendary drummer Yoshiki who had to wear one after damaging his neck headbanging. Growling vocals are on track (and from the crowd singing along). They didn't play BABYMETAL Death at all after 2017 (Yui was not performing and she left the band in October 2018) ... until they brought it back on April 2nd 2023 when Momometal was revealed as the new third member - and the loudest cheers happened when she introduced herself "Momometal desu". They only crucify Su on special occasions - the Legend S performance in 2017 for her 20th birthday was even more spectacular - and they had a lot of extra flames.🔥🦊🔥

Just an innocent song where the girls introduce themselves 😂. “Desu” = “I am / We are” E.g.: Babymetal Desu = We are Babymetal. You get the pun 😂. 🤘🦊

That was some f*ng Death Metal theatre, with three cute girls fronting the whole show, even making sure Su-Metal´s hair is right, when she is getting crucified🤣#notacult Backed by a band of guys knowing EXACTLY what they are doing. Celebrated by a phenomenal crowd of about 9k people. My favourite version of it. Usually, this song is the concert opener, with way less theatrics. Ganimal83 explained the meaning of it. They crucified Su-Metal several times, but only on special occasions. There is another version, from her 20th birthday celebration concert "Legend S". MORE fire! 🤣

One of the founding chapters in the BABYMETAL saga. On her 16th birthday, Suzuka abandons what she once was to be reborn as Su-Metal,Queen of The One and Goddess of Metal . Her life will never be the same...and neither will ours !🤘🦊🤘

"Death, death, death, death!". The giant statue which eventually crumbles at the end is an homage to Metallica"s "...And Justice For All". The neck brace is an homage to Japanese metal band, X Japan, because their drummer headbanged too much that he injured his neck requiring him to wear a neck brace. 🤘🦊🤘

Thanks for considering my suggestion. 😁 Yeah, after what happened yesterday in Paris metal is considered "satanic"... again. And that's great! Hahaha... 😈 Okay, nothing to see here. Just Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday with her friends and some of their fans (like 9.000 of them) all chanting DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!... haha... Now seriously, this is from the concert Legend 1997 - SU-METAL seitan sai (SU-METAL's 16th birthday party). It took place on December 21st, 2013 at the Makuhari Messe event hall in Chiba (Greater Tokyo Area). Lyrics are quite simple: "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" "SU-METAL desu, YUIMETAL desu, MOAMETAL desu, BABYMETAL desu... Death death death death death death..." etc. The word "desu" sounds close to the English (mis)pronunciation of "death" (since the "U" is silent), and pretty much means "I am, you are, we are". So, they are literally introducing themselves. Yes they love puns. Thus, the song's name is actually "BABYMETAL DEATH" (We are BABYMETAL). This was (and is again now) usually their opening song but this time they used it as a closing number. The meaning of the whole thing is the sacrifice of SU-METAL, giving up her mortal life as a human and Idol to reborn as a Metal Goddess. It was the final act of the show, which was an allegory about BABYMETAL's transition from a J-pop idol group subunit to a legit metal band. It also was partially themed around "Evangelion" (don't know how familiar you are with it). The beat on the intro and the final statue crumbling are obvious tributes to Metallica. And the neckbrace is one of their several tributes to X-Japan and Yoshiki Hayashi. 🤘🦊

BABYMETAL DEATH is the first song on their first album. It is how they introduced themselves.

I must apologize but I take issue with you comparing BABYMETAL to anime music: BABYMETAL is not anime - never has been and, with any luck, never will be. A word of advice: NEVER stop a video before its finished just because you THINK it is finished. I have seen many instances (especially with BABYMETAL videos) in which there is more content AFTER the music stops. Fortunately, in this case, you missed nothing but I would suggest that you let the video run its course in the future. Who needs a birthday cake and presents for your sixteenth birthday when you can be crucified by friends and colleagues in front of 8,000 members of The One all screaming "DEATH!!! DEATH!!! DEATH!!!"? NOT A CULT!!! Usually, this song is the first BABYMETAL plays in their concerts; it is them introducing themselves. This, however, was a unique situation and a unique concert. Keep rockin’ BABYMETAL!!! KITSUNE UP!!! 🤘🦊🤘

For those who say BABYMETAL is not metal, I present you with BABYMETAL Death.😉 OTFGK, but an interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity: Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase. Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL. The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show. 🦊 🦊 🦊 🖖 ❤
