Brooklands was offered this unique 1-11 for their collection, in 1994. I went with Julian to look at how difficult it would be to transport it by road.
It soon became clear the aircraft could be flowing into Brooklands and so this was done.
Background: This 1-11 was retained by the British Aircraft Corporation throughout its 29-year flying career. During this time it was used as a development and test aircraft for 1-11 variants and testing technical equipment.
The aircraft was the prototype 400 series first flown 13th July 1965, piloted by Peter Baker. It was then converted to the series 500 prototype before being converted into the series 475 prototype, which is the configuration it remains in today.
Donated by British Aerospace Airbus ltd, G-ASYD made its final (5,043rd) landing at Brooklands on 14th July 1994.
This aircraft and many other Hawker, Vickers and BAC types, can be visited at Brooklands Museum in Surrey.
