Bach’s Partita, As Digested by a Funk Composer (in Homage to Nahre Sol)

In this video I look at Bach's 3rd Violin Partita (in E major BWV 1006) and analyse how he handles rhythms, syncopation and more. The title is a joking reference to pianist and composer Nahre Sol who has a fabulous channel, linked below. In one video Nahre looks at Funk from the point of view of a Classical Musician. I often think of myself (only slightly tongue-in-cheek here) as a "funk composer", so in a way, this video is the reverse of Nahre's - Classical music from the point of view of a funk composer!

Embarrassing oversight - as several people have pointed out, Bach made his own arrangement of this piece as an organ part in the Symphonia to his Cantata BWV 29 ("Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir"), and it seems I definitely owe Schumann an apology - if anything Bach's arrangement is even more 'square' than Schumann's! I guess it comes down to perception, and for me the ambiguity that's definitely built into the solo version makes it a far more interesting listen.

Kudos for highlighting this ambiguity! (Maybe Bach had to tie it down for church elders? :) ) I found lots to like about the video - great material, stimulating analysis, helpful witty visuals and an enjoyable performance of (half of!) a bold new arrangement (which you should really finish ;-p) On the "more like this?" question, fwiw, I really enjoy videos where you leverage your considerable knowledge and analytic skills to deliver insights wholesale, and I'd count this as one of those. Thanks!

Could be a matter of context. BWV 29 was written for a City Council dedication ceremony, so, essentially, for Bach's direct employers. He might have preferred a tight dance opening to any ambiguities (it's way too fast for a saraband, though 😃)
@FernieCanto
@FernieCanto 6 лет назад
I believe the existence of that "square" arrangement doesn't mean that Bach had to "tie down" the rhythmic ambiguities of the solo version, but actually that those ambiguities wouldn't exist at all for a listener of his time. Since you mentioned yourself that the piece had the feel of a sarabande, I think listeners would know that through the power of convention, and therefore they were expected to follow the rhythm all the way through. I think those ambiguities only exist to modern ears, exactly because those conventions have been mostly lost. I can't shrug off the feeling that Bach would want to punch anyone who talked about rhythmic ambiguity in his pieces.

As a violinist, I've performed this piece countless times from when I first learned it about 20 years ago! The ambiguity of the beat has always been something I've struggled with in this piece. I've looked at Schumann's arrangement and Bach's own BWV 29 and 120 through college. I'm excited to take another crack at this piece this morning. Thank you for this video.

Thanks, David, I'm blown away by this. I've listened to that partita for many decades and intuitively grasped some of what you analyse here, and I was thinking I'd comment on how difficult it is to keep the beat in that middle section, which you described exactly. I loved your half-finished even funkier version and look forward to seeing the completed piece, as well as checking out the "even squarer than Schumann" Cantata, BWV 29. Your presentation was, as ever, amazingly clear. It is quite staggering that Bach was so post-modern.

Sarabande of G major cello suite is similar - maybe all sarabandes of cello suites... i think your analysis is spot on, and the arrangement is very satisfying! It seems to me that Bach’s violin/cello suites are all about rhyming rhythmic/melodic motives, with rhyme schemes that feel remarkably free and spontaneous. I can never tell where the bar lines are, listening. In baroque music bar lines frequently seem to have almost nothing to do with phrase... phrase games exist (to my knowledge) in Mozart Haydn Beethoven and Brahms, but in baroque music it doesn’t always seem to be a deliberate “trick”, rather a totally natural feature of the fortspinnung melody.

Well finish and hire a literate hip jazz drummer to come up with a trap set part hell a bassist too maybe. Or remove the piano and so violin jazz bass and a suitible trap set player. A whole concert of similarly prepared Bach would be a big hit in London, Copenhagen, Berlin, NYC. I would go to that concert. Violin Partitas Solo Cello suites What else?

Very interesting video, thank you very much. I am personally not so convinced about the "Sarabande"...I think the reason why he didn't start the piece on the first beat is simply because in this way, he gets the weight on the first beat of the second bar, which is actually nothing else than a turn on the note e, embellishing this note and therefor making it the heavy beat (e, f#, e, d#, e). You are supporting this idea in the beginning of your accompanied version 😊

I played the E-major Partita during my amateur violin studies. The part starting at bar 17 is most fascinating in it‘s execution. The string pattern of every 4 note group is AEAD. The second note stays the empty E string during the whole section while you stepwise slide down with the harmonic notes on the A and D string. You are in a way dancing around the E string slowly crossing it on your harmonic way downstairs. Your bow arm executes a lying 8 movement which is a most unusual bowing pattern and needs a lot of training to convince your brain 😁 Thank you for your interesting rhythmic bass pattern. I think Bach is very often open for different rhythmic divisions. For me this was especially evident in the final movement of the first Solo Sonata (Presto). You can either feel 6 notes or 3 notes as a group, the first variant being a 3/8 rhythm, the second a 2 beat rhythm, each beat containing 3 16th. The first rhythm is an elegant quick „waltz“, the second more march like. Will you finish your version? Would be interesting.

Wow great video! Thanks a lot for discussing tonic accents and their significance in rhythmic patterns and composition. I think this very crucial aspect of rhythmic patterns often gets overlooked, beyond durations of notes and dynamic accents, and especially Baroque and Classical era classical music can't be truly appreciated for their rhythm, I think, without paying attention to this aspect. Also thanks for highlighting the influence of dance on musical rhythm, which is really so natural and brings the rhythm and music in general to life, and has historically been one of the biggest influences on Western classical music, and perhaps, even most styles of 'Western' musics in general.

This is SUCH brilliant work 👏👏👏 I am familiar with this piece so well from both my violinist father and my violin past as his child & student. I was oppressed by him and that didn’t end well... But what I heard in your take on it, was how AHEAD OF HIS TIME and multidimensional Bach was himself and unable to express that in full splendour being oppressed by the times he lived in, commissioned by the church mainly, etc...:(. Makes me appreciate the times we live in and all we have access to. Imagine his genius today, with access to every tool to manifest his ideas and audiences always curious and open to new stuff. Today one does not need to be commissioned by anyone and as long as they stick at it, they’ll find their audience eventually or the audience will find them. Wow... I have suddenly connected to who Bach truly was and how trapped he must have felt in his times, having the imagination he had. Thank You so much for this video and all your awesome work 🙏

What a lovely analysis of Bach! When I was a 19 year old listener to both classical music (I think partly due to having played the flute for years) and punk rock (it being the early 80s in Washington, DC), I heard the Chaccone from the 2nd partita and was mesmerized. I am still mesmerized by these solo works, in particular the way he seems to create some interesting effects with the harmonics, which sort of hang like ghosts in the spaces around the played notes. Until the announcer came in, I was sure it was some contemporary composer. Needless to say, next Christmas saw a boxed set of all 6 solo violin works for me under the tree!
