This 63-minute video lesson explores an in-depth look at the transcription by Ferruccio Busoni of J.S. Bach’s Chaconne in D minor from Violin Partita No.2, BWV 1004. This tutorial is the first in a series of three tutorials covering this monumental work. Part 1 covers bars 1-93 of the piece. Regarded as one of the greatest transcriptions for solo piano of a work by J.S. Bach, Busoni’s masterful transcribing challenges the performer in numerous ways. This tutorial seeks to aid the performer with suggestions regarding fingering, rhythmic integrity, shaping and dynamics (and how to create variety with similar phrases), voicing, articulation and texture, reducing tension and creating technical ease with difficult passages, character among contrasting sections, the concept of orchestration and how this can apply to a keyboard work, and many other concepts to help you become as efficient as possible in your practice sessions.

I am teaching myself piano from the Schirmers' music library JS Bachs' complete collection. Started off with the inventions, progressed to sinfonias and now the English Suite no2. I'm not patriotic I just got the urge to play it! The Chaconne is in there, too I know it is not Urtext but its how I have learnt and still learning. Bach Chaconne sounds just as good when played on piano as well as violin in my opinion, Maxim Vengerov plays the chaconne beautiful.

Josh forgive me for messaging 9n a piano video. I'm having the minera dead sea bath which are great help. Going through tsw, after the bath feel very dry and tight skin. But have nothing that works moisturiser. Do you have any suggestions please. Would be very grateful. Great piano player also 👏👏👏 fairplay. Seen some videos

I've been noticing the majority of videos on you tube have chapters now, what are your thoughts of that for your channel?

Can’t wait to look at the following parts of this masterclass As a note regarding the “best interpretetion” if there is such a thing: all of you loving this piece should run and listen to Arthur Rubinstein. Absolutely gorgeous sound, majestic as it should be (per the composer’s wish), such a love and respect for the music. Decidedly one of the greatest artists. Now about you, Josh: just a few words about this video and all the others you have posted for a free access on RU-vid: thank you for all this. One has to realize the time it takes from your schedule and your own practice. And the content, unlike a few other “RU-vid teachers” is of extremely high value; probably a combination of your pianistic skills, your solid all-round knowledge as a musician, but also your humility. So thank you once more. I thought about learning the piece (as it is a gorgeous piece, indeed). Then I sight-read it and it took me almost 40 minutes to do so from beginning to end. During the first few pages, my excitation grew as I thought “well, with a lot of work, this is doable”, but it soon vanished as I tackled the harder variations. And I decided to shelve it but to find new interpretations on RU-vid anyway. This is how I found your tutorial. And my wish to try rekindled a bit. I will watch the rest now and see if I can summon the courage to spend the months this daunting piece would require to bring it would it be only to a half-asses interpretation And here comes my third thank you. Keep posting, Josh, you make many people happy and motivates them to work more on their instrument and their musicianship.

Dear Josh, thank you for this video. I desperately want Bach WTC 1 prelude and fugue in C minor - ask your wife to do a guest video for us. Thanks! ❤

Magnificent piece of music. Valentina Lisitsa plays it differently from any interpretation I've heard- she rolls/breaks up a lot of the left hand chords, right from the start. I don't know if I'll ever have the chops to play this, but it is lovely to watch you work on it. Thank you.

So glad to discover you did an entire 3 parter on this chaconne. It deserves it. And I can tell how much you love this piece by the segments you present. Bravo Josh. Thanks for the upload.
