I would remind some of the more senseless commentators that this is a reference audio document. It doesn't claim to be the definitive performance of Bach on piano. Marcelle Meyer is of the very best interpreters, for which I thank CMRR. This upload is a stellar addition to an already impressive catalogue (by CMRR) of beauty remastered for us all to enjoy.

When I heard her Partita No. 3, I was astonished. It contains all the emotion that Bach would have projected into this often underrated work (something directly related to the character of the piece itself). In most cases, it is something that most pianists, famous or not, foolishly overlook. Her playing is both melancholy and virtuous. She seems to occupy a major place in French Bach playing, along with Yvonne Lefebure.

She plays Bach in a way I’ve never quite heard before. The Inventions are so very fluidly and elegantly pedaled. And, re the above comments speaking of Gould, who used very little pedal in Bach (ditto Angela Hewitt): well, I worship his (and her) take(s) on Bach-who doesn’t?-yet this is diametrically opposed to these approaches and works equally well-and sounds so very different. Gorgeous. Thanks for posting. I am a successful, professional pop musician; but I have put it aside in my late middle age, and have taken up playing classical piano, and am studying counterpoint and classical composition. I’m so grateful to finally understand-and love-Bach. And for musicians like me, to hear a master like Meyer play these “student” pieces is an enormous boon to all who are in my position.

Marcelle Meyer trained with Debussy on how to play her Preludes after meeting him when she made the debut performance of the Satie Parade in 1917. Meyer became Erik Satie's favorite pianist and debuted Francis Poulenc Sonata for four hands with the composer. She debuted several of her other works and recorded with him. In the early 1920s she played for Darius Milhaud and Stravinsky

I think you have no idea about current day trends re interpretations of Bach (or Handel or any other Baroque) keyboard works played on the piano. Do you think the reaction at Julliard of a 20 year old plating like this would be castigate him/her or praise them? Of course you miss the main point which is that there are precious few pianists who have played Bach so gorgeously in the last 75 years.

Marcelle Meyer excels technically but above all musically. It is impressive how she has been able to combine fluidity of play and expressiveness. It is the letter absolutely reproduced. The letter, but also the spirit.. 🔊 FOLLOW US on SPOTIFY (Profil: CMRR) : spoti.fi/3016eVr 🔊 Download CMRR's recordings in High fidelity audio (QOBUZ) : bit.ly/2M1Eop2 ❤️ If you like CM//RR content, please consider membership at our Patreon page. Would just like to add that the recording sounds were very different early-mid 20th century--don't have the technical background to explain, but the sound and ambience is unique to the period. Since that is 'my' period it brings back so many memories and these recordings of Marcelle Meyer's playing are just jewels. Thanks once again to Classical Music for all you give us.

Well said. Indeed I find sometimes an old record with scratches from long back can evoke emotions that far surpass near perfect present recordings on occasion.

2.202.23 On Dec.25, 2022, I was among 5 tenants burned out of an old house. I lost almost everything from smoke and water. That night the ground was covered in ice and snow..as the firemen sprayed the house, water froze within minutes. We stood watching to see if we could return inside...me with my cat and another tenant with her Weimaraner. I was homeless until 3 weeks ago. A fireman brought out my laptop where I listen to Marcelle Meyer play on this extraordinary recording that keeps me grounded and not crying. Meyer and Andras Schiff are keeping me alive.....
