I am not religious at all, but consider myself a humanist and agnostic. Bach's cantatas touch me so much! In my opinion, that is not a contradiction. Bach means the magic of being. Nothing comes close to that.
Amazing performance: and so nice to hear it at these elegant tempos - and to see the brilliant musician Pieter-Jan Belder playing the recorder solo. (Each morning I begin with another CD from Lady Nevell and the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book played - magnificently - by him). Daniel Johannsen is brilliant, as ever, in his extraordinary declamation, technique and musicianship. Alex Potter too. But actually, everything is outstanding in this performance. And exemplary direction from Shunske Sato. Thanks, all!
THANK you for sharing the name of Pieter-Jan Belder! I was searching for him (both in the picture and in the description! A perfect example of recorders being hidden again...)
Amazing! I absolutely love this opening chorus- so dramatically chromatic! Also ASTOUNDED by the sound quality of the recording- I feel like I'm there in the church.
Hello Netherlands Bach Society, I listen to you all the time because as a musician I admire Bach and everyone who plays him. I would like to ask you the immense favor of taxing the Christmas oratory and that you continue to bring out all the best for your fans. Thank you so much from Colombia Gary.M
It was written in 1725, only his second year as kantor in Leipzig. With it’s beautiful tone painting, intricate polyphony and expressive harmony, this cantata must have been a complete mess that sunday 😅 pity for the poor Bach that could’t have at his disposal the superb musicians of the Netherlands Society 🙌
@@lucadeieso4815 You think the first performance of this cantata must have been a mess? Oh, I don't know ... Bach was a fairly competent musician; I think we could trust him to write for what his musicians were capable of.
@@mwnyc3976 i think most of the performances of his most difficult cantatas should have been a mess. That’s why his vocal music was considered "confused" in his own time and that’s why in 1730 he wrote the famous ‘Short but Most Necessary Draft for a Well-Appointed Church Music’, trying to secure additional funding for the choirs and orchestra, and pointing to the excellence of the musicians of the Dresden court, were the perfection and finesse of the performances of sacred music was renown in all Europe. Pity for Bach, he had in total 17 "usable" singers, 20 "not yet usable", and 17 "unfit". Even the best singers were termed "usable" by him 😅
@@lucadeieso4815 Thanks for the info! Doing this for twenty years though, with his temper, shouldn't have been that bad. :Ρ But certainly not perfect, NBS is a class of its own.
Hey! I absolutely love your performances, your take on Bach is fantastic and brilliant! But as someone who plays the recorder, I BEG YOU not to HIDE the musician! I was wondering through the first Chor: "Where is the recorder?? He's the main instrument there!" We already have such a hard time being noticed usually, please don't make it even harder! ;-)
I'm wondering if anyone hears the following: (1) the first chorus is sad, distressed, whereas the second chorus is happy and frenetic; (2) thus chorus two is simply the "inverse" of chorus one (3) the REAL resolution, the true spiritual answer in chorus 3. If there is a musical explanation that supports this hearing, I would be grateful for an explanation.
English lyrics by Francis Browne (BWV 103, anno 1725) You will weep and howl, but the world will rejoice Chorus and Bass Arioso [S, A, T, B / Bass]: Chorus: You will weep and howl, but the world will rejoice. Bass: But you will be sorrowful. Yet your sorrow will be turned to joy. __________ Recitativo T: Who would not sink down in mourning when the beloved is snatched away ? The soul's saviour, the refuge of sick hearts pays no attention to our pains. ___________ Aria A: No physician except you is to be found, [even if] I should search through the whole of Gilead. Who heals the wounds of my sins since here no one has any balm? If you hide yourself, then I must die. Have mercy,ah! hear me! You do not seek my ruin, so come, my heart still hopes. ____________ Recitativo A: After my anguish you will again revive me, and so I shall prepare for your arrival, I trust in the word of your promise that my sorrow will be turned to joy. _____________ Aria [Tenor]: Recover yourselves, my troubled senses, you make yourselves all too woeful. Leave off your sorrowful beginning before I drown in tears. My Jesus allows himself to be seen again, O joy, that nothing can equal! For all the good that has happened to me through this, take, take my heart as an offering! ______________ Chorale [S, A, T, B]: I have for a moment, my dear child, left you; but see, see, with great good fortune and comfort beyond all measure I shall on you the crown of joy place and honour; Your brief suffering will into joy and everlasting good be changed.
